'A Kiss on the Ocean' Is the New Single from the Dowling Poole, Announces Closeup PR
Nov 25, 2014 21:30 GMT 'A Kiss On The Ocean' is the new single from The Dowling Poole, announces CloseUp PR On 1 December 2014, The Dowling Poole released ‘A Kiss On The Ocean’, the second downloadable single from their acclaimed album ‘Bleak Strategies’, which was funded through a PledgeMusic initiative which saw the artists’ many fans coming together to get the project off the ground. The Sun said, “This awesome pairing results in glorious and slightly unhinged psychedelic pop rock”. Mojo hailed, “A classic British rock album heavy on power pop smarts” whilst Classic Rock stated, “Flawless and exhilarating, this demands to be the soundtrack to all of our waking summer dreams”. Formed by singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Willie Dowling (ex Honeycrack/Jackdaw4) and Jon Poole (ex Cardiacs), The Dowling Poole have created something truly special. Jon Poole says, “‘A Kiss On The Ocean’ was an audience favourite on our recent tour, although the jaunty pop disguises a slightly unsettling side, since it's really a song by a narcissist, singing while staring at his own reflection. When we first started recording ‘Bleak Strategies’, I would write Willie little messages every day in red lipstick on the bathroom mirror just to unnerve him a little. I think that's where this song started although it took us a while to get the right measure of light and shade.” Willie adds, “Of course it was Whitney Houston who invented self- love when she sang her impudent, preposterous and self-indulgent nonsense, ‘The Greatest Love of All’. I'm still not entirely sure what she meant but I like to think that we went one better with this one.” The single is accompanied with three tracks not on the album; ‘The Straw Man’ is a wry comment on the frenzy of confusion and doubt created by the Jimmy Saville debacle, and there is also a live acoustic version of ‘Hey Stranger’, a song written as a celebration of the life of Tim Smith, Jon's friend and former band partner in Cardiacs, who has been seriously ill for a number of years. -

Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover? L’Héritage De Frank Zappa : Juste Un Autre « Hoover »? Ben Watson
Document generated on 09/30/2021 7:50 a.m. Circuit Musiques contemporaines Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover? L’héritage de Frank Zappa : juste un autre « Hoover »? Ben Watson Frank Zappa : 10 ans après Article abstract Volume 14, Number 3, 2004 In "Frank Zappa's Legacy: just another Hoover?", Ben Watson reveals that when Frank Zappa referred to his "oeuvre" towards the end of his life, he URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/902325ar pronounced the French word like "Hoover", the world's most famous brand of DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/902325ar vacuum cleaner. Watson's essay starts with the proposition that Zappa's oeuvre is indeed a Hoover, a critical manoeuvre appropriate for Zappa's Dadaist See table of contents disdain for cultural values. Establishment critics currently praise Zappa's "genius" as a composer, but this removes the critical sting of his records. In fact, what made Zappa special was his recognition that both commercial commodification and the heritage industry (concepts of "genius") repress Publisher(s) desire and suppress music. In a detour into literary and psychoanalytical Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal theory, Watson's zappological algebra reaches the equation: Stéphane Mallarmé + Wilhelm Reich = Frank Zappa. After an art-historical examination of the Hoover motif in Zappa's oeuvre, Zappa's heritage is assessed today: ISSN Project/Object, the Muffin Men, The Simpsons and the improvising trio of 1183-1693 (print) Eugene Chadbourne, Jimmy Carl Black and Pat Thomas are singled out for 1488-9692 (digital) praise. The Dowling Poole Release Their Long Awaited Album "Bleak Strategies", Announces Closeup PR
May 18, 2014 21:29 BST The Dowling Poole release their long awaited album "Bleak Strategies", announces CloseUp PR. The Dowling Poole is a new band formed by singer-songwriters and multi- instrumentalists Willie Dowling (ex Honeycrack/Jackdaw4) and Jon Poole (ex Cardiacs). Dowling and Poole first met in 2011 when recording and producing Ginger Wildheart’s award winning, top-ten "555%" album, and it was mutual admiration at first sight. "I was immediately taken by Jon's remarkable and diverse musical talent", says Dowling, "but it took me an age to pluck up the courage to phone him and ask whether he'd like to do something together." Fortunately, Poole had been thinking along the same lines and was equally thrilled at the prospect of working with Dowling. They started writing songs and locked themselves away in Dowling's recording studio in France for a few months, writing and recording an album they have titled "Bleak Strategies". Influenced by pop masters such as XTC, Blur, 10CC, The Kinks, The Beatles and more, The Dowling Poole debut album "Bleak Strategies" is an eclectic and contemporary sounding mix of semi-psychedelic pop, somehow quintessentially British-sounding, laced with harmonies and a multitude of influences from the best of 50 years of rock and popular music. "It was a very collaborative process", says Poole, "We both brought songs to the table and we performed, sang and produced them together. You'd be hard pressed to guess who wrote what since we both were adding ideas left right and centre to each others work". -

Slap Magazine As the Cooler Autumn Weather Signals the End of the Festival Year

We create all dishes in our kitchen, using only the finest quality fresh ingredients. 01905 729 415 [email protected] SUGO at The Lamb & Flag 30 The Tything Worcester WR1 1JL f. t. i. Hi and welcome to the October 2017 issue of Slap Magazine as the cooler Autumn weather signals the end of the festival year. A brilliant season it was too, full of great memories, great places and an amazing mix of music and arts. This month we look back at just some of the coverage from a couple of local urban festivals, namely The Stroud Fringe Festival and of course the Worcester Music Festival. Indeed our front cover this month is Doozer McDooze who came up from Essex to open and compere the SLAP night at the Marrs Bar as Oct 2017 part of WMF. He loved it and we loved him! Now in it’s 10th year, this festival goes from strength to strength. Thousands of acts apply and do so in the knowledge that the event is raising money for a local charity and that WMF is a free festival in every sense of the word. As well as the hard SLAP MAGAZINE working committee, dozens of promoters, charity collectors, Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, sound engineers and volunteers give up their time also to put on around 250 performances across 20+ venues for free. Worcester WR1 2RS Simple maths will tell you that even if each performance Telephone: 01905 26660 commanded a modest figure of say £200, it would cost a half of [email protected] a million pounds in performers fees alone to stage the event For advertising enquiries, please contact: which would mean a ticket prices in excess of £200.
