The Gathering Limerick 2013 promises to be spectacular with numerous festivals and events taking place throughout the city and county all year long. Contact: Ann Curtin | Tel: +353 87 659 4668 Biking Blitz Round 2 Mountain Bike Event February 17th The second round of the exciting Biking Blitz friendly mountain bike event series takes place in Ballyhoura, Co Limerick. Choose from a 17km or 35km loop of some of the best mountain bike trails in Ireland. Contact: Niall Davis | www.bikingblitz.ie Murroe Boher Week of Welcomes March 8th-17th The Murroe Boher Expo and Week of Welcomes will encompass St. Patrick’s Day in Murroe. Events will include ghost stories by candlelight, workshops and demonstrations including a blacksmithing workshop in the Forge in Murroe, genealogy workshop on tracing your roots and heritage walks and talks. Contact: Amanda Slattery | www.murroe.net ‘Recruit and Mobilize’ Gathering March 14th-15th On 14th and 15th of March 2013, a group of volunteers from the United States are spending two days in our premises at Rape Crisis Midwest carrying out finishing works to our new building. Members of the local community will also be invited to attend and to participate. The evening will finish with entertainment/ food and a presentation to the group for their contribution to the project. More than 70,000 spectators thronged the streets of Limerick for the St Patrick’s Day parade in 2012. Along with the main parade, the festival includes the International Band Championship, festival racing, markets and family fun! Contact: [email protected] +353 61 310633 | www.gallery.limerick.ie St. Patrick’s Day Ballyhoura Country Parades March 17th Communities around Ballyhoura Country will be marching through the streets to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Bruff, Kilfinane, Kilmallock, Ballylanders, Mitchelstown and many more. Expect to hear the pipe bands, see stilt walkers and everyone in the community get into the festive spirit on March 17th 2013. Some have not been home for generations. They will get to see and trace where they are from while giving a helping hand. Beginning with a children’s event in the Community Hall in Murroe (Muintir Na Tire hall) between 17:00 and 19:00, with teas/ coffees for adults. Then relocating to Croker’s pub, Murroe from 19:00. Limerick has for the last 42 years organised the internationally acclaimed Limerick International Band Championship, which is part of Limericks St. Patrick’s Festival (Ireland’s largest St. Patrick’s Festival outside of Dublin). Each year marching bands from the four corners of Ireland, the USA and Europe join Limerick’s finest to showcase their musical prowess with adrenalin pumping music for the thousands of spectators to enjoy! Contact: www.limerick.ie/bandparade St. Mary’s 100 March A Gathering of Old and New March 22nd-24th 100 years since St. Mary’s Boys’ National School Abbeyfeale opened its doors we are planning a weekend of celebratory events where past pupils will get the chance to revisit their old school building (now the Community Centre) and view the many facilities in the new school. In a programme entitled ‘A Celebration of Music’, The Brown University Orchestra will perform with the Limerick Choral Union featuring Verdi and Gounod in their Easter repertoire. All profits of the concert will be donated to FOCUS IRELAND. It will feature such musical greats as Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Tommy Peoples, Dermot Byrne, Altan and Seamus Begley to name but a few. www.gradam.ie The Headless Horseman Adventure Race 2013 March 30th An adventure race and a perfect race to see what adventure racing is about. The race takes in the scenic ballyhoura mountains, mystical Lough Gur and Kilmallock heritage town. Contact: Dorothy Cantrell | +353 61 319710 Great Limerick Run May 5th On Sunday, 5th May 2013 the streets of Limerick will welcome more than 8,000 runners and 30,000 spectators to the Great Limerick Run. This event has something for every level of runner, including a marathon, half marathon and 6-mile distance event. Contact: John Cleary www.greatlimerickrun.com Fleadh by the Feale May 2nd-6th The annual Fleadh by the Feale festival will take place from Thursday 2nd to Monday 6th May 2013 at The Square, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. The highlight of the weekend is a concert featuring Ireland’s most popular & longest surviving band, namely the Kilfenora Ceili Band. To cater for the expected crowd, the new hall in Coláiste Ide & Iosef will be the venue. It would be worth making the trip home just for the concert. There will be a display of Irish, Slovenian, Croatian, French & Austrian traditional national foods with chefs and community members representing their participating country.
