RESUMEN Hemos realizado un estudio autecológico en una población de Pristidactylus cf. valeriae de la zona central de Chile. Consideramos período de actividad, selección de microhábitat, hábitos alimentarios. A estas variables les calculamos la diversidad del uso del recurso con el índice de Levins. Además registramos altura de percha, distancia crítica de huida y temperaturas corporales, asociadas a temperaturas abióticas del aire y del sustrato. Agrega mos un estudio morfológico analizado por la distancia euclidiana a la que aplicamos tratamientos de UPGMA para realizar un dendrograma que revelara las afinidades morfo lógicas entre la especie en estudio y aquellas que han sido descritas previamente. Además de los análisis anteriores, realizamos cariotipos de esta especie con técnicas estándar (Giemsa corriente) y Bandeo C. Los resultados revelan a esta especie como de hábitos saxícolas, con actividad diaria monomodal entre las 12 y las 18 horas, y hábitos alimentarios con tendencia a ingerir coléopteros, aunque esta preferencia se discute. La temperatura corporal de ella no se muestra diferente de la señalada en la literatura para otras especies del género y desde el punto de vista conductual de la selección de altura de percha, no aparecen diferencias significativas entre las hembras, los juveniles y los machos aunque se sugiere que estos últimos tendrían tendencia a estar en perchas más altas, exhibiendo conductas territoriales que se manifiestan vigorosamente. -

En esta nota documentamos a P. torquatus en ambientes esclerófilos. Presentamos evidencias fotográficas. Se discute acerca de esta presunta innovación y se especula acerca de este hecho. Recent invasion or was it always like this? The species of the genus Pristidactylus in Chile are traditionally linked with deciduous forest, except P. volcanensis; in this paper we document P. torquatus in sclerophyll environments. We present graphics evidences. We discuss about this presumptive innovation and speculate about this. En Chile este género aparece como un grupo reducido de especies (sólo cuatro) que exhiben una marcada relación con los bosques caducifolios de Nothofagus (Bosque de Hoja Caduca sensu Gajardo 1994). Horno Ecofisiolog´ıa Vegetal, IADIZA, Casilla de Correo 507, 5500 Mendoza, Argentina (Received 29 April 1996, accepted 3 August 1996) It has been suggested that lower rates of granivory in South American warm deserts compared to their North American counterparts arose from a reduction of seed reserves in the former owing to the extinction of argyrolagid marsupials. We measured seed reserves in two habitats of the central Monte Desert in an attempt to detect such seed decline, but to no avail. After moderate rainfall, maximum seed standing crops reached 16,000 and 23,000 seeds m–2 in shrublands and open forests, respectively. Under the canopy of trees and shrubs there were 19,000 and 37,000 seeds m–2; whereas in exposed areas there were c. 10,000 seeds m–2 in both habitats. Seed banks in other South American semi-arid areas showed similar values. Total grass seeds as well as those presumably preferred by ants also seem to be similar in both continents. Hence, granivory in South America, as has been already reported for Australia, is lower than in North America in spite of the great similarity of seed bank sizes. Moreover, argyrolagids were unlikely seed-hoarding grani- vores, therefore some other reason than argyrolagid extinction should be sought to explain the lack of specialized seed-eating mammals, and the smaller overall seed consumption rates in South American deserts. ©1997 Academic Press Limited Keywords: granivory; North and South American deserts; seed banks; argyrolagid extinction Introduction Studies of seed removal show highest intensity of granivory in North American deserts and Israel, intermediate in Australia and the South African Karoo, and lowest in the South American Monte (Mares & Rosenzweig, 1978; Abramsky, 1983; Morton, 1985; Kerley, 1991). -
Assessment Reports on Emerging Ecological Issues in Central Asia
ASSESSMENT REPORTS ON EMERGING ECOLOGICAL ISSUES IN CENTRAL ASIA Ashgabat Foreword In December 2006, five Central Asian countries established the Environment Convention as an important initiative for regional co- operation among the member states on sustainable development. The implementation of the Convention requires regular assessment of the state of the environment with a focus on emerging environ- mental issues. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is mandated to regularly assess and monitor major environmental challenges and trends. The rapid socio-economic growth coupled with increase in intensity and frequency of natural disasters have brought many challenging emerging issues to the forefront. The emerging environmental issues are a threat to food security, water security, energy security and sustainable development. This assessment report on the emerging environmental issues in Central Asia is timely and meaningful to the Central Asian region. The report, the first of its kind in Central Asia, identifies key emerging en- vironmental issues in Central Asia – Atmospheric Brown Cloud, Dust Storms, Glacial Melt, Integrated Chemical Management and the Use of Alternative Energy Resources. These issues have been ana- lyzed based on sound science by various experts, including scientists, academics and civil society representatives, to determine their impact on environment and population. Based on the analysis the report identifies the gaps in the existing system to address the emerging environmental issues and provide clear recommendations to fill the gaps. I believe that this report will bring emerging environmental issues to the attention of different stake- holders including the general public. This report will also provide a sound basis for decision makers in Central Asian countries in addressing the emerging environmental issues at the policy level.
