ADMINISTRATOR – CLINT PARNELL TSSAA is proud to recognize Clint Parnell as its distinguished service honoree as an administrator. Mr. Parnell began his career at Goodpasture in 1994 as high school principal and athletic director- a dual role that few ever would undertake. He held not only those roles but also has served as soccer and bowling coach over the years when these programs first started at Goodpasture. Mr. Parnell retired from being the principal in 2005 and now serves as athletic director, which still gives him the enjoyment of continuing to be involved in and influencing the lives of young people, a mission he has had for the past 44 years. Mr. Parnell’s teaching career began in 1963 at Maplewood High School. While there, he taught History and coached football, basketball, track and refereed sports when not coaching over the 21 years. He also taught and coached at Ewing Park at that school’s beginning. In 1984, he was named teacher of year at Maplewood High School. During the mid 80’s, he began his career in administration as an assistant principal at Whites Creek High School. After a few years, he went to Dupont Tyler Middle School also as an assistant principal. He retired from the Metropolitan Public School System in 1993. During his lifetime, he has been a part of many winning teams as player, coach, and athletic director. In high school in the late 50’s in Perry County, TN, he was a part of the 1956 and 1957 basketball teams that won back-to-back state championships. In the 70’s he was a member of the 1971 coaching staff when Maplewood won the Clinic Bowl under the direction of head coach Paul Burgess, and then was an assistant coach with Gerald Johnson when the basketball team made a trip to the state tournament. He was also a member of the coaching staff in 1976 when the track team at Maplewood won the state as a team under Coach Phil Grammer. Currently, with his years of service as athletic director at Goodpasture, he has had the football team coached by David Martin be in post-season play 13 times with 3 state championships. The boys’ basketball team, currently coached by Keith Edwards, has been a part of the state tournament five times and the track team coached by Andy McWilliams has won two state champions. The baseball team coached by Richie Estep has made eight trips to the state tournament and won four championships. The softball program coached by Lee Phillips has been runner- up 4 times and won six state championships. With the golf teams, the boys have been runner-up in the state three times and champions twice, the girls were a runner-up in 2005 and champions in 2006. The volleyball team coached by Lynn Dearing has also seen post season play becoming a state runner- up in 2003. Many young people have been a part of his career over the past 44 years such as Jeff Woodcock, Preston Brown, E.J. Junior, Roland Scruggs, Lenny Manning, Keith Ridley, Drew Maddox, Ron Mercer, Sam Howard, Eric Fontenot, Patrick Turner, Danielle Pieroni, Reanna Dickerson, and Justin Purkey, but the greatest influence he has had on any young people has been his two children and three grandchildren. Many lessons of life and Christian values have been passed down to his daughter, Rhonda, son, Jeff, now his grandson, James, and two granddaughters, Meredith and Maggie. His grandchildren currently attend Goodpasture and have the good fortune to be a part of his life on a daily basis at school. For the past 43 years, he has been married to his wife, Judy who has been for many seasons and countless hours seen sitting in the stands supporting him in all his endeavors as coach and athletic director. Many schools and programs have benefited from Clint Parnell being a part of them but he would tell you he has benefited the most. He loves seeing young people succeed, that is why he is an educator, coach, and athletic director. TSSAA is proud to recognize Clint Parnell for his work, dedication, and the many contributions he has made to young people in his many years of service.

CONTRIBUTOR – STEPHEN HARGIS It is a pleasure for TSSAA to recognize Stephen Hargis as our Distinguished Service Award honoree in the contributor category. Stephen graduated from South Pittsburg High School in 1989 and began working part-time at the Chattanooga Free Press in April 1990. Within months he became full-time even while taking college classes, and in the fall of 1990 he helped cover a Tennessee state championship football game. Now 35 years old, he has covered state football championships ever since, and in the spring of 1991 he helped the Free Press cover the TSSAA state softball tournament at Chattanooga, the event that morphed into the comprehensive set of championships known as Spring Fling. Stephen has worked at every Spring Fling, and he has been at every boys’ state basketball tournament since 1992 except one, when he had back surgery. Among many awards for his work, Stephen was the Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club’s statewide prep writer of the year in 1998, and he was honored by the TSSAA for his contributions to high school sports in the state by receiving the 2003-2004 A.F. Bridges Athletic District Award. Known for his annual three-state tour of high school football practices on Tennessee’s opening day, Stephen has developed a reputation for creativity with accuracy and clarity in his writing. He became the Times Free Press prep editor in 2001 and was promoted to assistant sports editor last year. He still oversees the prep staff and covers events. He also writes a weekly column for the newspaper, sometimes but not always pertaining to high school sports. Stephen is a devoted father to a 14-year-old son, Riley, and a 10-year-old daughter, Lauren. TSSAA proudly salutes Stephen Hargis for the outstanding job he does and his many contributions to high school athletics in Tennessee.

For the fourth consecutive year, the TSSAA Board of Control earmarked $27,000 toward a scholarship fund to recognize one outstanding student athlete from each of the 27 schools that were Divisional Finalist for the A.F. Each nominee was asked to provide a complete resume as well as a paper describing what participation in activities has meant to them. Additionally, we asked for input as to their perception of their role and responsibilities as a student leader. Each student will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship once they have enrolled in college.
