  • Diverse Genetic Origin of Indian Muslims: Evidence from Autosomal STR Loci
Journal of Human Genetics (2009) 54, 340–348 & 2009 The Japan Society of Human Genetics All rights reserved 1434-5161/09 $32.00 www.nature.com/jhg ORIGINAL ARTICLE Diverse genetic origin of Indian Muslims: evidence from autosomal STR loci Muthukrishnan Eaaswarkhanth1,2, Bhawna Dubey1, Poorlin Ramakodi Meganathan1, Zeinab Ravesh2, Faizan Ahmed Khan3, Lalji Singh2, Kumarasamy Thangaraj2 and Ikramul Haque1 The origin and relationships of Indian Muslims is still dubious and are not yet genetically well studied. In the light of historically attested movements into Indian subcontinent during the demic expansion of Islam, the present study aims to substantiate whether it had been accompanied by any gene flow or only a cultural transformation phenomenon. An array of 13 autosomal STR markers that are common in the worldwide data sets was used to explore the genetic diversity of Indian Muslims. The austere endogamy being practiced for several generations was confirmed by the genetic demarcation of each of the six Indian Muslim communities in the phylogenetic assessments for the markers examined. The analyses were further refined by comparison with geographically closest neighboring Hindu religious groups (including several caste and tribal populations) and the populations from Middle East, East Asia and Europe. We found that some of the Muslim populations displayed high level of regional genetic affinity rather than religious affinity. Interestingly, in Dawoodi Bohras (TN and GUJ) and Iranian Shia significant genetic contribution from West Asia, especially Iran (49, 47 and 46%, respectively) was observed. This divulges the existence of Middle Eastern genetic signatures in some of the contemporary Indian Muslim populations.

Historiograph}' In India: A Study Of The Muslims As The First Historiographers In India Judith L. Clawson Asian Seminar Paper Fall, 1907 INTRODUCTION Prior to my visit last summer, I was virtually unacquainted with India. Granted, when India was mentioned a few general images would come to mind: world's largest democracy, partition, Gandhi, yoga, population and starvation, Hiiiduism, no history. The seminar afforded an opportunity to look into these vague ideas of mine. Being a history major one of my interests naturally concerned the Indian past. I had initially planned a topic on some aspect of early Hindu history. It took little time to discover that a great deal of the literature concerning this area is speculative, that there was actually no 'history' written during this period. However, while searching through those marvelous Indian book stores, I ran across all sorts of books on medieval Indian history, on Muslim history and civilization in India.

This is evidenced by the presence of a brilliant civilization and history in the past. We can see how the struggle of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions in doing such a great expansion of territory in the spread of Islam, so that Islamic civilization in the past so highly developed and rapidly. Among the expansion of the territory once conquered by Islam and “islamized” is the South Asia region, the countries included in this region are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Islam was introduced in the region is in the form of a civilization that has developed a culture characterized by agriculture, trade and organized religious establishment. Islam is not the first force that can control this area, but with the entrance and the rule of Islam in the region over the past three centuries, Islam was capable of contributing to the local culture. Because the region is comprised of various racial, ancestry, and the resulting group is easy to be ruled by outside forces.

Practising Fractal Shi’i identities through muharram rituals in Mumbai By Reza mASouDi nEJAD Abstract this article explains the Shi’a-muslims in mumbai as a fractal society, a social organisation constituted of numerous social segments, each with its own shape and structure. As a result, this article refers to Shi’i identities, not one single Shi’i identity. in particular, the discussion explores how the fractal organisation of Shi’a society and diverse Shi’i identities are practised through muharram rituals. this paper shows that each Shi’a community has invented and reinvented its identity over time through muharram rituals, and that mumbai as a cosmopolitan city has intensified the need for the reinvention of identities. the idea for this paper was conceived at the A fractal shape can be split into parts whose own beginning of my fieldwork in mumbai in 2009, shape is similar to the whole (e.g. see Batty 1985; when i was faced with a tsunami of names of 2005). in this specific context, fractal society different Shi’a-muslim communities. most of my refers to a social organisation constituted based early interviews were saturated with discussions on numerous social segments, each of which has about distinct Shi’a communities. • Translating Wisdom: Hindu-Muslim Intellectual Interactions in Early Modern South Asia
Religion | AsiAn studies NAIR TRANSLATING WISDOM During the height of Muslim power in Mughal South Asia, Hindu and Muslim schol- ars worked collaboratively to translate a large body of Hindu Sanskrit texts into the Persian language. Translating Wisdom reconstructs the intellectual processes that underlay these translations. Using as a case study the 1597 Persian rendition of the Yoga-Vāsis.t.ha—an influential and popular Sanskrit philosophical tale—Shan- kar Nair illustrates how these early modern scholars drew upon their respective tra- ditions to forge a common vocabulary through which to understand one another. These scholars thus achieved, Nair argues, a nuanced cultural exchange significant not only to South Asia’s past but also its present. “An erudite and valuable contribution. Nair’s deep linguistic and philosophical exper- tise illuminates the writings of three important if overlooked seventeenth-century thinkers.” Supriya Gandhi, author of The Emperor Who Never Was: Dara Shukoh in Mughal India “Nair exhibits a breathtaking command of languages, textual traditions, and intellec- tual cultures in this pioneering study of the crisscrossing of Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic cultural jet streams in sixteenth-century India.” Jonardon Ganeri, author of The Lost Age of Reason: Philosophy in Early Modern India 1450–1700 “Shankar Nair examines a pivotal work of Mughal translation and shows how it chan- nels huge vortexes of Islamic and Hindu intellectual culture. A masterwork.” John Stratton Hawley, author of A Storm of Songs: India and the Idea of the Bhakti Movement in Early Modern South Asia in Early Modern Interactions Intellectual Hindu-Muslim “A welcome addition to the history of Hindu and Islamic interactions in early modern India, highlighting the subtleties of translation and the painstaking creation of a vo- cabulary important for both religions.” Francis X.
