30 YEARS 16 TRIPS

“What is the Historic Traveling Camporee”

The Historic Traveling Camporee is a three-day weekend adventure by chartered bus. It is an event designed to expose our Scout youth and leaders to, and expand their knowledge of, our country’s heritage. It is important for our Scouts to see and understand how hard our ancestors worked and the challenges they went through so that we may have the freedoms that we enjoy today. It is fun, educational and one-of-a-kind ~ one of ’s mountaintop experiences. Out of two hundred and seventy-two Councils in the across the United States, Northeastern Pennsylvania Council is the “ONLY” one to host Traveling on a biennial basis on this large a scale for this long a period of time – 30 years & counting!

How many opportunities do YOU have to participate in a weekend Camporee by chartered bus?

On this year’s exciting trip, we start off in the “Narragansett Bay area” of Newport, RI; with a visit to "Fort Adams” – not like any other Fort we have visited! A surprise awaits you! Fort Adams is a former US Army post that was established on July 4, 1799 as a First System coastal fortification named for President John Adams. Its first commander was Captain John Henry who was later instrumental in starting the War of 1812. Next, we will see what life was like for wealthy18th & 19th century Americans as we tour the “Breakers Mansion” and grounds. We finish our day hiking along the “Cliff Walk – a designated National Recreation Trail” taking in some of the most beautiful coastline in all of New England.

Sunday, Day 2, will find us traveling west where we will spend the day exploring the Mystic area of nearby Connecticut. We will start off at the “Mystic Aquarium,” a combination tourist attraction and research facility, where every underwater creature is more amazing than the last. Exhibits put you in close proximity with whales, penquins, sea lions and a 30,000-gallon tank with exotic fish from around the world. Next up we will be spending the afternoon at nearby “Mystic Seaport” itself, the largest maritime museum in the United States; notable for its collection of sailing ships and boats and for the re-creation of the crafts and fabric of an entire 19th-century seafaring village. It consists of more than 60 historic buildings, most of them rare commercial structures moved to the 19-acre site and meticulously restored.

Monday, Day 3, in keeping with the nautical theme, starts off with a visit to the historic “USS Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum” in Groton, where we will board and explore the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. The nearby museum displays working periscopes, mini-subs and mini-theaters as it recounts the history of the U.S. Submarine Force. Next up we will visit the Mashantucket Pequot Museum as we explore the Native American culture of this wooded/coastal area. The museum and research center is owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The museum’s permanent collection includes artifacts of Native American peoples of eastern North America from the 16th century to the 20th century; interactive exhibits and life-size three-dimensional dioramas depict the lifeways and history of the Pequots and their ancestors from the last glacial period through modern times. One highlight is a 22,000 sq. ft. walk-through re-creation of a coastal Pequot village around the year 1550, shortly before their first contact with Europeans. The village is populated by 51 life-size figures of Indians engaged in activities such as building wigwams, sharpening arrows, and weaving mats. A 600 ft. photomural of an oak-hickory forest surrounds the village; and…a 185-ft. high observation tower allows visitors to view the Mashantucket Pequot reservation and surrounding areas of southeastern Connecticut.

It is a new trip for us, and we are excited to show it to you – start planning YOUR Troop or Crew’s New England experience today. Join us for this activity-packed weekend ~ and a mountain-top experience on 2020’s exciting & educational 16th biennial Traveling Camporee to the Ocean state of Rhode Island and the Constitution state of Connecticut!

WHO CAN GO: • By Troop or Crew – at least two registered adult leaders MUST BE in attendance from each Troop or Crew registering. Reminder: ALL leaders and/or parents MUST be registered with their Troop or Crew and MUST have completed Youth Protection Training and PA Background Clearances before the trip!

• 2nd-yr. Webelos – “if invited by their Troop only!” (MUST attend with a parent, who must be registered with their unit first [if not already registered as a leader], and will need to complete Youth Protection Training and PA Background Clearances before the trip!)

• Individual Scouts, meaning any “registered” Boy Scout or Venturer – individual Scouts MUST go with a parent or connect with a Troop or Crew already signed up. (Note: If not already registered, the Scout’s parent must register with their Troop or Crew first and will need to complete Youth Protection Training and PA Background Clearances before the trip.)

Note: Please remember…this is a weekend campout – accompanying adults (and Scouts) MUST “be prepared” for all contingencies. “You WILL be doing a LOT of walking!!!” The main job for adults who participate in this trip is as a chaperone for their Scouts so that they get the most out of the venues we visit that they possibly can.

RESERVATIONS: A $50.00 “non refundable” deposit for “EACH individual attending” will reserve your seat. “PLEASE NOTE: Deposits may be transferred to a new participant, but cannot be returned OR transferred to an individual already registered!” Deposits made by May 2nd will guarantee you a seat on a bus! After May 2nd, as buses fill up, you may be placed on a waiting list until there are enough reservations to fill the next bus. Don’t delay – this trip is going to be a popular one! After your initial deposit is made, payments can be made in $30/$35 increments, or paid in full at any time; however, whatever way you decide to pay, payment in full is due on or before September 26th, 2020.

Any payments made after September 26th will be required to add a $25 late fee!

DRESS: “Class A” Scouts BSA or Scouts field uniforms ARE REQUIRED! (pants, shirt, socks, belt & Scout hat). This is the uniform of the Boy Scouts of America. Remember, we are going to be ambassadors of our Northeastern Pennsylvania Council AND the Boy Scouts of America. PLEASE keep shirts tucked in! General neatness is the order of the day. NO camouflage clothing is allowed! (Leaders and Senior Patrol Leaders are responsible for enforcing these rules.) Should you need it, look up BSA Uniform Inspection Sheets on line.

TRANSPORTATION: We will be using Avery Transportation, Inc., 47-passenger, climate-controlled motor coaches with restroom facilities. Departure time from PNC Field in Moosic will be 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th. Plan on arriving at the stadium at 5:15 a.m. for our 6:00 a.m. departure. Return arrival time will be approximately 7:30 p.m., Monday, October 12th (dependent on traffic). Cars may be left in the stadium’s parking lot over the weekend. You MUST park them back along the tree line on the administrative side (right side) of the stadium. Keep in mind, that the stadium will not be responsible for your car, so leave it at your own discretion!

WHAT TO BRING: See equipment list further down in this packet.

WHAT NOT TO BRING: Because of limited space on the bus, NO large, external frame backpacks, fold-up cots, foot lockers, large picnic coolers or other unnecessary gear will be permitted. A duffel or gym bag is best. AGAIN…MARK YOUR NAME or INITIALS and UNIT NUMBER ON YOUR GEAR! Make sure everyone has counted how many pieces of equipment they came with, have written it down and have counted that equipment before leaving the bus to go home! Due to ICC regulations, ‘“NO”’ liquid fuel or propane tanks or canisters may be carried on board or in the underneath storage bays of the bus!
