W.L.Bockslaff). According to requirements of the Riga Stock Exchange Committee, the building was constructed in "Gothic brick" forms reflecting the Hanseatic city traditions. The indoor structure can be well seen from outside: the classes are on the side of Kr. Valdemāra Street, the Grand Hall, stairs and teachers' apartments - on Kalpaka Boulevard. The building is decorated with local and imported materials - red brick, ceramic tiles, various stones. The columns at the entrance are made of Rembate dolomite sandstone. In a number of indoor ornamental paintings, the motifs of Art Nouveau were used. The ceiling is striking, decorated by one of the largest paintings in the Baltics. The Art Nouveau stained glass made in E. Tode’s workshop, decorates the huge windows. 4. Main Building of the Latvian National Museum of Arts GPS Details : DD 56.9557867 24.11294769999995 DMSN N 56° 57' 20.832'' E 24° 6' 46.611'' The building at 10a Kr. Valdemāra Street was constructed between 1903 and 1905 for the needs of the Riga City Museum of Art and the Riga Society for Art Promotion (Kunstverein). Designed by the museum’s first director, the Baltic German architect and art historian, Wilhelm Neuman, (1849–1919). This building is one of the most impressive in the Park and Boulevard Circle area of Riga. The structure, as well as the parameters of the exhibition rooms, corresponded to the required standard for an art museum in Europe at the previous turn of the century. The majestic facade is designed in the Baroque and Classicist styles; the sculptural group of the central fronton was created by the sculptor August Volz (1851–1926). The interior of the building – the lobby and the ornaments on the staircase banister – feature elements of Art Nouveau. The top-floor lobby is adorned with six decorative semi-circular paintings by the great Latvian painter Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945) and a master of Estonian classical art Gerhard von Rosen (1856–1927). On 12 February 2013, the public operation of the Latvian National Museum of Art was suspended due to the launch of its reconstruction. The hospital is notable as a monument to Latvia's medical, cultural and architectural history since the structure featured the most progressive ideas of the time, and was constructed by the best Latvian architects. In 1873, the building was reconstructed as Latvia's first pavilion-type hospital (arch. Johan Daniel Felsko). In 1907, a wing for administration of the hospital and an outpatient hospital were added according to the project by Reinhold Schmaeling; now the outpatient hospital is completely reconstructed under arch. V.Rauhvargere. A wing for patients with diseases of the central nervous system was built in 1937 (arch. Eizens Laube). In 2006, the renovation of a reception hall was completed according to the project by Olita Upaciere and funded by ERAF. 6. Daile Theater GPS Details : DD 56.95978969999999 24.12617279999995 DMS N 56° 57' 35.243'' E 24° 7' 34.222'' The biggest theater in Latvia that is an excellent example of the architecture of international functionalism of 1960s in Latvia. Author of the project is architect Marta Staņa – the Daile Theater was the most significant building in the entire life of the architect, though she never experienced the finish of its construction in 1976; after her death architect Imants Jākobsons helped to complete it. Consistent arrangement of amounts differentiated by functions and spacious, mutually merged rooms are characteristic to the building. Glazed viewers’ lobby stretched along the Brīvības Street creates the main façade. Above it – highlight of the end wall of viewers’ hall – logo of the theater plastically interpreted by sculptor Ojārs Feldbergs. In the large frontal square, dark brick box- office hall contrasts with bright concrete and glass surfaces. In general, the building is characterized by brutalist aesthetics. Today the cemetery features about 60 species of trees and shrubs, among them 39 introduced species: Japanese larch, common maple, dwarf Russian almond, yellow twig dogwood, black poplar, white rose, meadowsweet, Crimean linden, Siberian elm, common lime, Northern white-cedar, and others. Between 1770 and 1772, the Baltic District of the Russian Empire suffered from the Black Plague; in order to cope with it, a ruling was issued stipulating that the dead must be buried outside the town (the order reached Riga on 23 February 1773) - a burial ground must be set up in at least 2 kilometre-distance. Thus, the area of the present Great Cemetery was chosen in 1773. The "Great Cemetery" Ensemble of Gardens and Parks is a 22-hectare property (12 hectares - 1st category; 10 hectares - 2nd category) currently owned by the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church. The area is located between Brīvības, Mēness, Miera and Klijānu Streets in Riga Vidzeme District.
