FRA Urges SecDef to Reconsider Changes to DOD Child Care Centers for USCG Families The FRA has dispatched a letter to the secretary of defense urging him to re-consider his decision to restrict attendance at child development centers for kids from U.S. Coast Guard families. Press reports indicate that one of the unintended consequences of this policy change is that as many as 1,000 children of active duty Coast Guard families could lose their spots at base child development centers. The association believes it is important to provide adequate child care at all military installations. The FRA advocates for the DOD increasing funding for child development centers rather than restrict usage. The association also wants to ensure funding parity with DOD personnel on pay, benefits and housing for Coast Guardsmen. At a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing, Coast Guard Commandant Karl Schultz expressed serious concerns about the changed child development center policy.

“We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of pro‹ ting by dearly bought experience.” — George Washington

CHECK RIDE is the raw, true story of one Army Aviator’s time in Vietnam from 1969-1970. While Tom McGurn was only one young pilot, thousands shared his experiences in the Army. In Check Ride, he recounts previously undisclosed de- tails of ƒ ight missions, giving the reader a taste of the every- day ƒ avor of life during those times. From ranger insertions/ extractions to shipborne operations, combat assaults, SEALS, and the usual WTF! missions, this era created a new genera- tion of mobile warfare warriors who were ‹ ne-tuned by the needs of the United States Army.

Some had it better. Some had it worse.

Tom will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
