    Welcome to the first progress report for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention! We are pressing on, in times of Covid, and continuing to plan a wonderful in person convention in Montréal, Canada. We have a stunning guest list and a superlative team for both planning and the creation of the gathering not to be missed. We will be at the Hôtel Bonaventure, an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and just outside the Old Port of Montréal. It is near major roads, right across the street from Gare Centrale, the Montréal train station, and is directly connected to two Metro stations, making it easily accessible for both motorists and public transport users. We will be able to enjoy a lavish 2.5 acres of gardens with streams inhabited by ducks and fish as well as a year-round outdoor heated pool. Our committee is busy excitedly planning a convention that will surpass your every expectation. Our theme will be YA fantasy. The field of young adult fantasy has grown from being popular to becoming a dominant category of 21st century literature, bringing millions of new readers to hundreds of new authors. We are working on a diverse program that will explore this genre that celebrates fantasy fiction in all of its forms: epic, dark, paranormal, urban, and other varieties. We invite members to share what they enjoy, what they have learned, what they have written themselves, and what they hope to see coming in the field of young adult fantasy fiction. We look forward to seeing you all in Montréal!     DON TUCK WINS HUGO Tasmanian fan and bibliophile, DONALD H.TUCK, has won a further award for his work in the science fiction and fantasy reference field, with his ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION AND 'FANTASY Volume III, which won the Non-Fiction Hugo Award at the World SF Convention, LA-CON, held August 30th to September 3rd. Don was previously presented with a Committee Award by the '62 World SF Co, Chicon III; for his work on THE HANDBOOK OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY, which grew into the three volume encyclopedia published by Advent : Publishers Inc. in Chicago, Illinois,U.S.A. Winning the Hugo Award, the first one presented to an Australian fan or professional, is a fitting reward for the tremendous amount of time and effort Don has put into his very valuable reference work. ( A profile of Don appears on page 12.) 8365 People Attend David Brin's STARTIDE RISING wins DONALD H.TUCK C. D.H.Tuck '84 Hugo Best Novel Award L.A.CON, the 42nd World SF Convention, was the largest World SF Con held so far. The Anaheim Convention Centre in Anaheim California, near Hollywood, was the centre of the activities which apparently took over where the Olympic Games left off. 9282 people joined the convention with 8365 actually attending. 2542 people joined at the door, despite the memberships costs of $35 a day and $75 for the full con. Atlanta won the bld to hold the 1986 World SF Convention, on the first ballot, with 789 out of the total of valid votes cast of 1368.

This year there is a change of venue to The Bull in Price Street, a few minutes’ walk from the City centre, a small old traditional pub with a separate dining area with good beer as well as good food. The address is 1 Price Street, Birmingham B4 6JU and the time is 7:30 for 8:00 pm. It is only a short walk from the City Centre. NB This month’s newsletter was printed a week earlier due to holiday commitments. September 13th – there will be a talk and video presentation about WORLDCON 2014 by ALICE LAWSON (Chair) and JAMES BACON (Head of Programme). MEMBERS’ NEWS Stan Nicholls is to publish a new collection of short stories WAKE ME TO SHAKE ME. The publisher is Newcon Press. The book will be launched at World Fantasy Con in Brighton in late October. Stan Nicholls and Anne Gay will also be Guests of Honour at Andromeda One (the one day SF convention at the Custard Factory on 21st September).
