The McGinnis Newspaper – College Edition

The McGinnis School Newspaper Staff have put together this special College Edition to show the students of McGinnis School a sample of some of the fine colleges and universities available to them when they graduate high school. As middle school students, college is still a few years away. However, it is never too early to begin thinking about where you will further your education after graduating high school, as well as what are the qualifications necessary to get accepted to the school of your dreams. Preparing yourself for college begins now. Please enjoy learning information about these colleges and universities.

Terms to know:

Enrollment: the total number of students

Undergraduate student: a student studying for their first degree

Graduate student: a student who has already graduated with their first degree and is now working to receive another degree

G.P.A. (Grade Point Average): a number representing the average of your final grades. Typically a 4.0 is the highest possible GPA (straight A’s)

SAT: a test taken in high school ; colleges look at SAT scores to determine whether or not to accept a student. The cost of the test is $45.

SAT test: As of 2016, there are now two sections (one Math, one Reading/Writing)

Rowan University is a public institution that was founded in 1923. Once you enter Stanford University grounds you enter a beautifully diverse place with equally rich history, and an exceptional area surrounded by nature. The university is near the Santa Cruz Mountain and also the Pacific Ocean, and the San Francisco Bay. It’s in the center of Northern California’s “Silicon Valley”, which is also home to Google, Apple, Facebook, etc. This extraordinary college is home to a quality education and exceptional sport teams and different clubs. Students who go to Stanford have the option to live on campus, and the Noble Hall from 1918 is the oldest residence that also still houses students. On the Stanford campus there are in total 30 dining places ; the range of foods and beverages offered in these dining places go from Italian to Californian cuisine. As far as shopping goes, you have a wide variety of stores to choose from like Stanford Student Store, Stanford University Bookstore, Stanford Athletic Shop, etc. If Stanford is one of the places that you are interested in you should go and visit places like Memorial Church and , which if you go to the top of the Hoover Tower you can see the campus and the bay area. Can you imagine spending 4 years learning how to make it in the fashion industry, while living in the greatest, most stylish city in the world? Guess what! Michael Kors, sportswear fashion designer, went to FIT University. Ah, school colors - the perfect way to show how much school spirit you have. The colors are Columbia blue, white, and navy.
