They are :- Liz Feldman - World Masters Record Holder and multiple World Champion from the Lahti games. Barry Murley - Ex VFA Footballer and Field Umpire, Barry took up running again to help his grandkids in Little Aths. Won Gold in the M70 Steeplechase at the Sydney World Masters Games. Pam Tindal - World Masters Games Gold medallist and holder of most Victorian W50 racewalking records. Here’s something that other venues can also look at, recently East Burwood Venue were successful in winning a prize in the Leader Newspapers Grass Roots Competition. They had to submit an entry in 100 words or less saying why they needed new equipment. Jenny Scholtz drafted and lodged the entry and won a $1000 voucher for use at Rebel Sports which will be used to purchase new javelins, discuses and shot puts. Well done Jenny and East Burwood. From Dawn Hartigan We want to let our family, friends and associates know that Ross and I are taking on a charity challenge of a five day trek ( 6-7 hours per day) along the Great Wall of China to raise funds for children with Diabetes One. My partner Ross was hit by a car about 10 years ago, whilst cycling, and was told he would never walk again. Despite two hip replacements and some knee problems, he is back cycling, training in the gym and even plays pennant level squash. Walking distances is going to be a significant challenge for him, on rugged terrain and particularly going downhill, however he too, is driven to do something larger than himself. We ask that you support us and make a difference in the lives of these children. The money will go specifically to children with Diabetes 1 to give them the opportunity to attend a special camp to develop independence through adventure. The camps are run in partnership with the Royal Children’s Hospital and Southern Health. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for Diabetes Australia and remember, we only get to make a real difference if a lot of well meaning and caring people in our community are willing to support the cause. Everthing counts and is greatly appreciated and all donations are fully tax deductable. Donations can be entered on either of the websites below or a cheque made out to Diabetes Australia Vic can be forwarded to Dawn. http://www.everydayhero.com.au/dawn_hartigan or http://www.everydayhero.com.au/ross_edwards Kevin Irons of Frankston Venue recently had a pacemaker fitted and would like to hear from other runners who have had the same procedure. Kevin can be contacted on 97873323. 5 The Browne Shield Looks to once again be in Knox’s keeping with a comfortable lead over four closely grouped venues. What’s more, Knox has the individual leaders in both the Mens and Womens sections. CHRIS WARDLAW. “RAB” ON THE RUN. Chris “Rab” Wardlaw has done it all in athletics. Two time Olympian, coach to Steve Moneghetti and Kerryn McCann, Head Coach to the Australian Track and Field Team for the Sydney Olympics, the list goes on and on. No wonder he is looked upon as Australia’s ‘distance running guru’. N.M. Chris, it’s the Christmas / New Year period and you’re at Falls Creek again. How many years have you been coming up here? C.W. I first came up in 1969 / 70 so I think that makes 32 years all up. N.M. Why Falls Creek? C.W. Well, I reckon that it has three or four things going for it. One is that there is a touch of altitude although I think that only has a minor impact. Secondly, Falls Creek has a fantastic running environment, really quite difficult running actually that toughens people up. Thirdly, I like the village where you can create a positive group atmosphere. Also, at Falls Creek there’s not much else to do so the runners get a lot of rest up here. So overall, Falls Creek has a fantastic all-round training effect on athletes. N.M. And athletes come from all over Australia, and the world, to train here. The Ray Boyd story certainly illustrates that. C.W. I think Boydy’s story is just fantastic - all about doing everything possible to be the best athlete you can be. (Ed. Ray Boyd lives in Western Australia. A few years ago Ray was determined to spend his Christmas holidays training at Falls Creek so he caught an early morning flight from Perth to Melbourne, a train from Melbourne to Wangaratta, then a bus from Wangaratta to Mount Beauty.

  • Garry Henry. Australia's Enigmatic Marathon Man
GARRY HENRY. AUSTRALIA’S ENIGMATIC MARATHON MAN. Australia has a long and proud history in the marathon producing World Record holders, Olympic, Commonwealth and Championship medallists and winners of many of the ‘Big City” marathons around the world. And leading the Aussie charge in the ultimate test of athletic endurance and mental toughness have been runners such as: Derek Clayton, Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti, Lisa Ondieki, Kerryn McCann, Garry Henry ............... Garry who? Many will not have heard of Garry Henry for he was a quiet achiever who did much of his best running overseas and rarely ran with the top Australian athletes of the time. However, he was highly talented and as tough and determined as they come. Those who do know of Garry Henry will probably have heard of his slightly eccentric ways, his bushranger looks and the awesome training sessions that have grown to ‘legend status’ over the years. I was fortunate to catch up with the man Tim O’Shaughnessy once labelled, ‘the real living legend’ at Falls Creek for a chat about his amazing career. N.M. Garry, why have you travelled to Falls Creek? G.H. Mainly to catch up with some old friends that I haven’t seen for just over four years. N.M. When you were running at your best, did you use Falls Creek as a training base over summer? G.H. No, I think I first came to Falls Creek in the mid eighties, probably 1985, and although I was fit then, I wasn’t going as well as I was in 1980, for instance.
