UCLA SoŌ ball: ‘07 in Review 2007 SEASON IN REVIEó

Although the 2007 UCLA softball campaign opened with a tumultuous start and ended with a disappointment in the postseason, the Bruins enjoyed a successful season both on and off the fi eld. UCLA fi nished the year with a 37-18 record and fi nished in a tie for third in the always- competitive Pacifi c-10 Conference. The rocky beginning started in Arizona, when the Bruins not only lost three of fi ve games, but also lost their senior third baseman Ashley Herrera to a left ACL injury in the sixth inning of the fi rst contest of the year against Texas. Upon its return from the desert, UCLA began to click and won 23 of its next 27, including a 12-game winning streak from Mar. 3-25 to take a 24-7 record into Pac-10 play. During the preseason, the Bruins scored at least seven runs on 16 occasions and mercy-ruled opponents 12 times. UCLA set a pair of school records early in the season, drawing 15 walks in a 14-4 victory over Syracuse on Feb. 9. Nine days later, the Bruins set another watershed mark with seven home runs in a 12-2 dismantling of Wright State. Megan Langenfeld and Kaila Shull each two home runs. On Mar. 2, the Bruins tied a school best with eight doubles in an 11-0 victory over Long Beach State. The Bruins were steady during Pac-10 play, and while they never dipped more than two games below .500 in conference action, they were unable to get more than four games over that mark. UCLA received outstanding performances during Pac-10 play from Tara Henry, who hit .400 in league action, Lisa Dodd (.397, 5 HR) and Krista Colburn (.375, 3 HR). In the circle, Langenfeld went 6-1 with a 1.48 ERA against Pac-10 competition. During the last conference series in April, the Bruins had a remarkable weekend, sweeping the Oregon schools. But that was only part of the highlight of the three-day span. On Apr. 28, the Bruins retired assistant coach Gina Vecchione’s #2 jersey in a pre-game ceremony and Jodie Legaspi capped off the celebration with a pair of home runs in a 6-3 victory. The very next day, Anjelica Selden confi rmed her status as the queen of K’s at UCLA, registering her 1,096th to become the school’s all-time leader. The postseason began with a 6-3 victory over Loyola Marymount at Easton Stadium. But the joy from the win was short-lived, as the Bruins lost twice the next day to Hawai’i and Loyola Marymount to get eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
