The scenic painngs will be on display Sept. 8 through Nov. 3. Admission is free. The museum is located at 24 North 300 West. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. For further informaon, please phone (435) 226-1439 or visit www.brighamcitymuseum.org. Painng in “plein air,” a French term for painng outdoors, is a flourishing trend in the art world as was evident in the strong response to the museum’s juried exhibion. All ages submied artworks for the compeon. Purchase prizes totaling up to $3,000 were award- ed. Sponsors are Niagara Boling, Hansen Jewelry Co., Hansen Motor Co., ABC Construcon, Nucor, Wahlen Denstry and (anonymous) in memory of Elenora “Nora” Henriea Koer Biddulph. Juror for the compeon was Lydia Gravis, Shaw Gallery Direc- tor at Weber State University. Gravis has a Bachelor of Arts in painng and drawing and a Master of Fine Arts in visual art. She selected the following for awards: Allen Brockbank, Centerville, First Place for “Sanpete Serenade”; G. Russell Case, Brigham City, Second Place for “Willard Morning”; and Isaac Brockbank, Perry, Third Place for “Misty A er- noon.” Gravis chose Allen Brockbank’s painng for an award because his “composion and linear perspecve evokes curiosity in the viewer. The artwork gives a sense of nostalgia for rural America through lighng as well as depicng an old house, buildings and a dirt road. The work conveys a sense of quiet and simplicity.” The juror singled out Case for honors because his piece “conveys that sasfying sense of color one feels with the golden light that happens in the morning. He took a simple composion and brought the scene to life through color and han- dling of paint.” Gravis picked Isaac Brockbank’s artwork for recognion because it “portrays the scene we’ve been inundated with lately – smoky skies! Also, the scene gives the viewer a sense of calm which is achieved through composion, color scheme, warm underpainng and small size of canvas.” Sanpete Serenade by Allen Brockbank

Page 8 • hp://brighamcity.utah.gov/senior-center.htm Anatomy of a Fake Check Scam By Colleen Tressler Consumer Education Specialist, FTC

Fake checks drive many types of scams – like those involving phony prize wins, fake jobs, mystery shoppers, online classified ad sales, and others. In a fake check scam, a person you don’t know asks you to deposit a check – somemes for several thousand dollars and usually for more than what you are owed – and wire some of the money back to that person. The scammers always have a good story to explain the overpayment – they’re stuck out of the country, they need you to cover taxes or fees, you need to buy supplies, or something else. But by the me your bank discovers you’ve deposited a bad check, the scammer already has the money you sent, and you’re stuck paying the rest of the check back to the bank. Remember –just because the check has cleared does not mean that it is good.

The Federal Trade Commission receives tens of thousands of reports each year about fake checks. Over the last three years, the number of complaints has steadily increased, and so have the dollars lost.

The FTC’s offers some p-offs to rip-offs and what to do if you get a check from someone you don’t know. Be Wary! Talk to someone you trust and contact your bank before you act. Never take a check for more than your selling price. Never send money back to someone who sent you a check. Selling Online? Consider using an escrow or online payment service.

Please share this informaon with others. Vicms may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this informaon may make a difference in someone else’s life.

Pumpkin and Spice and everything nice: Many people think of pumpkins as lile more than a Halloween decoraon or a Thanksgiving pie filling. However, it may be me to rethink this plump, nutrious orange plant. Pumpkin is a highly nutrient-dense food. It is rich in vitamins and minerals but low in calories. Pumpkin seeds, leaves, and juices all pack a powerful nutrional punch.

Fast facts on pumpkins:

The potassium contained within pumpkins can have a posive effect on blood pressure.

The anoxidants in pumpkin could help prevent degenerave damage to the eyes.

Avoid canned pumpkin pie mix, as it typically contains added sugars and syrups.

Uncut pumpkins should be stored in a cool, dark place for up to 2 months.

Pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin can be used as a replacement for buer or oil in baking recipes Possible health benefits

Pumpkin has a range of fantasc health benefits, including being one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a powerful anoxidant. It also gives orange vegetables and fruits their vibrant color. The body converts any ingested beta-carotene into vitamin A. Consuming foods rich in beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, offer protecon against asthma and heart disease, and delay aging and body degeneraon. Eang pumpkin is good for the heart. The fiber, potassi- um, and vitamin C content in pumpkin all support heart health. Studies suggest that consuming enough potassium may be almost as important as decreasing sodium intake for the treatment of hypertension, or high blood pressure. Decreasing sodium intake involves eang meals that contain lile or no salt. Increased potassium intake is also associated with a reduced risk of stroke, protecon against loss of muscle mass, and preservaon of bone mineral density, asthma and heart disease, and delay ag- ing and body degeneraon. Page 12 • hp://brighamcity.utah.gov/senior-center.htm Marge’s Meanderings— GIVE ME SOME GREASE PAINT AND A PARADE

There are a few phrases that really make me happy!! There really are MANY sayings that cheer me but these last few weeks I have been thinking of two of them. The first one is, “THE SMELL OF THE GREASE PAINT. THE ROAR OF THE CROWD.” I always feel that way when I am around a lot of people in places where I love to aend!! It was that way for me at the Box Elder County Fair! Jack and I both LOVE the fair and we have aended just about eve- ry year since we have moved here! That was in 1970! We had three of our six children then. Add 7 foster children and Exchange students to that and you can see we have taken a lot of children to all those Carnival rides, through all those pigs, cows, rabbits, chicken, goats , produce, 4-H, arts ,home, and commercial areas. Don’t tell all the children BUT since we became empty nesters, it is more fun to go to the fair with just ourselves! We do like - ning into our children with their children and then we just say our “Hellos” and “Goodbyes” and go our separate ways. Our children seem to be wiser than we were and their children seem to accept the limits that can be spent on rides! A er all we don’t want them to have to sell one of our Grandkids so they can afford to go to the fair!! Actually our Fair is so affordable! You don’t have to pay to go in and the entertainment is free too! It is tradion for us to always get hamburgers, potato chips and drinks where our friends from Corrine are doing the grilling!! I like to end the nostalgic meal with a Sundae on a sck! I think that was the same kind of meal I had when I aended the Bannock County Fair in Downey, Idaho!! That is where I gained my love of Fairs! Jack use to go to the San Diego County Fair when he was younger and in those days he showed his cows and hogs. He even had a hog or pig sck to keep the pig headed in the right way. Our friends here show pigs at our county fair so we gave them the pig sck. I hope it holds good memories for them too!! We were talking to some of our City friends in Salt Lake about our Fair and they said hardly anyone goes to their County Fair and there is very lile 4-H entries any more!! How sad!! I could rave on a long me about our Fair but let me just say “the smell of the hamburgers and the roar of the crowd will always thrill me!! The second statement that suits my nature is, “ I LOVE A PARADE”! The Fair parade is one I enjoy but it is just a warm up for the Peach Days parade!! Where else can you live where you have two grand events like the Fair and Peach Days so close together! When a person says, “You’ve seen one parade, you’ve seen them all, “ wasn’t talk- ing about the things I see! Half the fun of the Peach Days Parade is seeing all your friends and their families along the Parade Route. The children geng candy are different every year, too, depending on where you sit!! The five year old Junior Peach Queen contestants are only five once in their lives and I love to see them in the train and on the Converbles. It is tradion for my Daughter in Law and her girls to take me and the other Grandma to the Older Peach Queen contest! It is wonderful!! I was surely glad I didn’t have to judge the girls this year! What great girls! I think, however, I feel that way every year! Even the policians in the parades are different every few years or so and they are usually our good neigh- bors!! I think the Good Lord loves a parade too!! I can never remember a Peach Days Parade geng rained out in the almost 50 years we’ve lived here!! I have been sing here a long me wring this. It isn’t my nature to be sll this long! I think I will go look for the “ smell of some greasepaint and If I am lucky, I may even find a crowd roaring about a parade! “
