Was this one of the reasons why the Short emigrated? in 1816. He and Hannah Jordan were on a passenger list between Jun 1817 and 1 Aug 1817 at brig ship 'Trafalgar' from, Hull, YKS, United Kingdom. He and Hannah Jordan emigrated say 10 Jun 1817 from Hull, England, Great Britain.4 He lived circa Aug 1817 at New Jerusalem, Hampstead Parish, NB, Canada. He was appointed Surveyor of Highways along with Mark Short, James Dunn in 1830 at Hampstead parish, NB, Canada. He "...married a widow Weldon, but they not living very agreeably for a while after marriage separated, and did not live together again." after 1842 at NB, Canada. He and Hannah Jordan were Individual Note on 3 Jun 1995 at Bewholme, England, Great Britain.5 HANNAH JORDAN was born on 8 Apr 1769 at England, Great Britain. She died on 10 May 1842 at New Jerusalem, Hampstead, NB, Canada, at age 73. The five children of John1 Short and Hannah Jordan were as follows: 2 i. Mark2 Short was born on 20 Jun 1791 at England, Great Britain. He married Elizabeth Hoyt, daughter of Joseph Hoyt and Mary Crabb, on 9 Jul 1822 at NB, Canada. He died on 9 Jun 1871 at New Jerusalem, NB, Canada, at age 79. He was buried say 12 Jun 1871 at Peak of the Grant Cemetery, New Jerusalem, NB, Canada. ii. Dorothy Short was born say 12 May 1793 at England, Great Britain. She was christened on 12 May 1793 at Nunkeeling, England, Great Britain. She died on 19 Apr 1802 at Bewholme, England, Great Britain, at age 8. 3 iii. William Short was christened on 16 Oct 1796 at Nunkeeling, England, Great Britain. He was buried on 16 May 1871 at Nunkeeling, England, Great Britain. iv. Hannah Short was born say 19 Apr 1799 at Bewholme, England, Great Britain. She was christened on 19 Apr 1799 at Nunkeeling, England, Great Britain. She married Henry Sharp, son of Joseph Sharp and Hannah Ogden, on 13 Oct 1821 at Hampstead, NB, Canada. She married Samuel Mahood on 23 Oct 1834 at NB, Canada.6 She died after 4 Apr 1881 at NB, Canada. She was buried after 4 Apr 1881 at NB, Canada. 1Her family name spelled "Jordon" on certificate. Married by Joseph Wade, Curate, witnesses William Hodgson & W. Clarke. John signed the certificate, but Hannah made her mark. Note dated 9 December 2009 from Avril with Christmas letter: " ...I looked through the 'Brandesburton' census returns where I found a John Short, born 1805, I tried to find a Baptism in that name to establish if the parents names were John Short and Hannah Jordan but no luck there - Brandesburton is about two miles from Bewholm, so it was a possibility to solve the mystery of John Short - but will keep searching." May Collier Short (author of 1985 Short Listing) had noted in her records that there was a John Short, but no record was ever found. to substantiate it. Annie Elders also lists a 'John - went to the states'. This person was not shown on either passenger list of the Trafalgar. 2New Brunswick Courier reported death of John Short in Kings County on 10/27/1849 issue. His daughter, Hannah (Short) Mahood probably lived in Kings county at the time. Died after "short, but painful illness" Was he living with daughter Hannah at time? Verna (Short) Mott "An old diary 1845-1849 of Alexander Machum Jr. turned up and I see some Short family notes in it. .... Quoting Alexander: 1849, Sept. 19, 'Mr. John Short after an illness of only one week departed this life, aged 85 years, in the blessed hope of a glorious immortality. Seven years ago the 10th of May last his first wife died aged 81,since that time he married a widow Weldon, but they not living very agreeabley for a while after marriage, separated, and did not live together again.'" 3John's family moved to Bewholme area about 1793 when Dorothy baptised and listed as living in Bewholme. (There is some question whether there was a "John Jr." Family historian Mae Short was the only one mentioning him. And, she was the one who listed Nunkeeling as being the ancestral home of the Shorts. None of her working papers have ever been found. If a "John Jr." existed, he would probably have been born in Bewholme, as the last child born was Samuel in 1804. 4The Short family, headed by John and Hannah left Hull, York, England in early June 1817 aboard the brig ship Trafalgar for a two month journey to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. 5There is some question whether there was a "John Jr.". Mae (Collier) Short was the only one mentioning him. And, she was the one who listed Nunkeeling as being the ancestral home of the Shorts. None of her working papers have ever been found. If a "John Jr." existed, he would probably have been born in Bewholme, as Samuel was born in 1804 and the family arrived in Canada in1817. 6Widow of Henry Sharp at time of marriage to Samuel Mahood, who was widower, lived in Hampstead Parish, NB at time. THE LAST DAYS CHAPTER I THE EARLY DAYS Richard Harding Davis was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1864, but, so far as memory serves me, his life and mine began together several years later in the three-story brick house on South Twenty-first Street, to which we had just moved. For more than forty years this was our home in all that the word implies, and I do not believe that there was ever a moment when it was not the predominating influence in page 2 / 485 Richard's life and in his work. As I learned in later years, the house had come into the possession of my father and mother after a period on their part of hard endeavor and unusual sacrifice. It was their ambition to add to this home not only the comforts and the beautiful inanimate things of life, but to create an atmosphere which would prove a constant help to those who lived under its roof--an inspiration to their children that should endure so long as they lived.

Mrs Susan Cunliffe-Lister, HM Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire This directory was put together by people with a disability for people with a disability, though the places and information included will be useful to anyone. With a wealth of hidden treasures, East Yorkshire is often referred to as ‘Britain’s best kept secret’. Savour its traditions, stately homes, stunning nature reserves and colourful seaside life. East Yorkshire has many claims to fame; did you know, for example, that Britain’s tallest man came from Market Weighton, and that Hull is home to England’s smallest window? For people interested in wildlife and conservation there is much that can be done from home or a local accessible area. Whatever your chosen form of countryside recreation, whether it’s joining a group, doing voluntary work, or getting yourself out into the countryside on your own, we hope you will get as much out of it as we do. There is still some way to go before we have a properly accessible countryside. By contacting Open Country or another of the organisations listed here, you can help to encourage better access for all in the future. Revised March 2015.

  • Joseph Lyons: the Tasmanian Treasurer
Joseph Lyons: the Tasmanian treasurer John Hawkins1 ‘Honest Joe’ Lyons (far left in the picture below), was premier of Tasmania before moving to federal parliament and serving as an acting treasurer for Labor during the Great Depression. He clashed with Theodore and others and left the party. He then became a conservative treasurer and prime minister as the Australian economy gradually emerged from the depression. He was known for his consensual but orthodox approach. Source: National Library of Australia. 1 The author formerly worked in the Domestic Economy Division, the Australian Treasury. The views in this article are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Australian Treasury. 85 Joseph Lyons: the Tasmanian treasurer Introduction Joseph Aloysius Lyons was the only treasurer (and prime minister) from Tasmania. As the Tasmanian minister for education in his thirties, Lyons fell in love with Enid Burnell, a teenage trainee teacher. They married in 1915 when she was seventeen and he was thirty-five.2 The marriage remained a love match all their lives.3 Indeed, until recently the only published biography of Lyons was called ‘a political love story’; White (1987). After Lyons’ death Enid was herself elected to the federal parliament and became the first female cabinet member. They had eleven children (another baby died), pictured on the previous page. Lyons was amiable and popular, a ‘kindly, compassionate man’.4 ‘Everyone liked Joe Lyons’ when he was first a federal minister.5 His resemblance to a cheerful koala was a cartoonist’s delight. His typist recalled ‘a pretty shrewd judge of people … extraordinarily tolerant’ but, as befitted a former teacher, with a ‘horror of split infinitives’.6 A pacifist who abhorred violence, he opposed capital punishment.7 He not only opposed conscription, but did not take place in wartime recruitment (so it is perhaps fortunate that he did not face leadership during a world war).
