Note dated 9 December 2009 from Avril with Christmas letter: " ...I looked through the 'Brandesburton' census returns where I found a John Short, born 1805, I tried to find a Baptism in that name to establish if the parents names were John Short and Hannah Jordan but no luck there - Brandesburton is about two miles from Bewholm, so it was a possibility to solve the mystery of John Short - but will keep searching." May Collier Short (author of 1985 Short Listing) had noted in her records that there was a John Short, but no record was ever found. to substantiate it. Annie Elders also lists a 'John - went to the states'. This person was not shown on either passenger list of the Trafalgar. 2New Brunswick Courier reported death of John Short in Kings County on 10/27/1849 issue. His daughter, Hannah (Short) Mahood probably lived in Kings county at the time. Died after "short, but painful illness" Was he living with daughter Hannah at time? Verna (Short) Mott "An old diary 1845-1849 of Alexander Machum Jr. turned up and I see some Short family notes in it. .... Quoting Alexander: 1849, Sept. 19, 'Mr. John Short after an illness of only one week departed this life, aged 85 years, in the blessed hope of a glorious immortality. Seven years ago the 10th of May last his first wife died aged 81,since that time he married a widow Weldon, but they not living very agreeabley for a while after marriage, separated, and did not live together again.'" 3John's family moved to Bewholme area about 1793 when Dorothy baptised and listed as living in Bewholme. (There is some question whether there was a "John Jr." Family historian Mae Short was the only one mentioning him. And, she was the one who listed Nunkeeling as being the ancestral home of the Shorts. None of her working papers have ever been found. If a "John Jr." existed, he would probably have been born in Bewholme, as the last child born was Samuel in 1804. 4The Short family, headed by John and Hannah left Hull, York, England in early June 1817 aboard the brig ship Trafalgar for a two month journey to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. 5There is some question whether there was a "John Jr.".
