North-East history in general and its intellectual history in particular is an unpeopled place. In Indian social science literature, North-East history for the last seventy years has mostly revolved around separatist movements, insurgencies, borderland issue and trans- national migration. However, it seldom focussed on the intellectuals who have articulated the voice of this place and constructed an intellectual history of this region. This paper attempts to explore the intellectual history of Assam through understanding the life history of three key socio-political figures – Gopinath Bordoloi, Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Chandraprabha Saikiani.

    Class - VIII AGRICULTURE OF ASSAM Agriculture forms the backbone of the economy of Assam. About 65 % of the total working force is engaged in agriculture and allied activities. It is observed that about half of the total income of the state of Assam comes from the agricultural sector. Fig 2.1: Pictures showing agricultural practices in Assam MAIN FEATURES OF AGRICULTURE Assam has a mere 2.4 % of the land area of India, yet supports more than 2.6 % of the population of India. The physical features including soil, rainfall and temperature in Assam in general are suitable for cultivation of paddy crops which occupies 65 % of the total cropped area. The other crops are wheat, pulses and oil seeds. Major cash crops are tea, jute, sugarcane, mesta and horticulture crops. Some of the crops like rice, wheat, oil seeds, tea , fruits etc provide raw material for some local industries such as rice milling, flour milling, oil pressing, tea manufacturing, jute industry and fruit preservation and canning industries.. Thus agriculture provides livelihood to a large population of Assam. AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE For the purpose of land utilization, the areas of Assam are divided under ten headings namely forest, land put to non-agricultural uses, barren and uncultivable land, permanent pastures and other grazing land, cultivable waste land, current fallow, other than current fallow net sown area and area sown more than once. 72 Fig 2.2: Major crops and their distribution The state is delineated into six broad agro-climatic regions namely upper north bank Brahmaputra valley, upper south bank Brahmaputra valley, Central Assam valley, Lower Assam valley, Barak plain and the hilly region.

Abstract: Modern Assamese theatre is basically amateur in nature and the permanent playhouses erected by various amateur theatre societies of Assam played the pivotal role in the development of western-style Assamese dramaturgy. Ban Theatre of Tezpur in the Sonitpur district of Assam occupied the central place in the development of modern Assamese theatre. The playhouse gave birth to the greatest Assamese dramatist Jyotiprasad Agarwala and raised stellar performers like Bishnu Rabha and Phani Sarma. It introduced the first theatrical orchestra in the State, standardised native Assamese songs and music and employed innovative styles of playwriting and play-production. The present study makes an analytical attempt to trace the history of performance at Ban Theatre and situate its vibrant tradition of theatre practice in the context of the development of modern Assamese theatre.

Its impact on the religious, political and social life of Assam, particularly in the land of Kamakhya, is indeed great and abiding. As religious institutions and places of worship, the temples were the places of popular gatherings as well as means of strengthening of the associated royal authorities. In order to win over the people, the local deities mostly non- Aryan were often identified with their counterparts extolled in Vedic and puranic literature. This study is based primarily on the quest of the rulers of Assam for legitimation through religious institutions. In earlier period the rulers of the land of Kamakhya, derived religious legitimating of their authority through the performance of grand royal patronage of local or regional cults. This development was deeply influenced by the emergence of the Bhakti cult as a new genuine folk religion. Politically perhaps even more important, however, were the strong local and regional roots of these cults. The spatial connotation of the cults, radiating from their sacred place, vested the newly emerging local and regional states with an additional dimension of territoriality of particular interest, in this regard are the changing modes of legitimating at different stages of state formation ranging from princely patronage of deities by emerging early rajas to the construction of imperial temples by rulers of the early medieval ‘imperial’ regional kingdoms.

He was considered as Assamese cultural icon, deeply revered for his creative vision and output and is popularly called the Rupkonwar of Assamese Culture. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born on 17 June 1903 to an Agrawalfamily, to ParamanandaAgarwala and KiranmoyeeAgarwala at Tamulbari Tea Estate. He was a famous filmmaker. His first film released in 1935, was based on the play by LaxminathBezbarua about the heroic Ahomprincess Sati Joymotiimprisoned and tortured by a repressive Ahomswargadeo. In his life period he had written around 300 songs, he is also lauded as the creator of Assamese cinema. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala widely known as Rupkonwar has been constantly an individualistic and a truly committedIndian. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala is one of the most distinguished creative giants of Assam. His writings and activities contributed to the culture and society of Assam have accredited him to a distinct position.

In Tezpur his musical talent was spotted by Jyotiprasad Agarwala, a noted Assamese lyricist, and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, a renowned Assamese artist. In 1936, he traveled with his mentors to Kolkata where he recorded his very first song at the Aurora Studio for the Selona Company. He received his education from Sonaram High School in Guwahati, Dhubri Government High School in Dhubri, Tezpur High School and the Cotton College. 1 | P a g e He then attended Banaras Hindu University where he completed his graduation and post-graduation, obtaining his BA in Political Science in 1944 and MA in Political Science in 1946. He got enrolled at the Columbia University, New York, in 1949, on a scholarship and earned his doctoral degree in 1952 on his thesis "Proposals for Preparing India's Basic Education to use Audio-Visual Techniques in Adult Education". The entire journey of Assamese song is enlightened and enriched with the great like Sankardeva and Madhabdeva with their Borgeet ; the ushers like Satyanath Bora, Padma Nath Gohain Baruah, Nalinibala Devi, Chandra Kumar Agarwala, Laxmi Nath Bezbaruah; and the harbingers of modernity like Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Bishnu Rabha. Over the ages Assamese songs and music have gone through different phases of evolution and transformation marked by the national, humanitarian and aesthetic spirit of the Assamese people. And now the Assamese songs have broken the confinement of time and place, and claimed a universal pedestal. By chanting this sacred verse, I am presenting the first budget of the new Government led by our dynamic leader, Sri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Assam, because this duty of presentation is being solemnly carried out with the three vital things that this verse from Upanishads emphasis and they are: "Reality", "Knowledge", "immortal and self-lessness". 3. Budget presentation is a sacred duty. Besides, it is a historical practice, constitutional mandate and codal exercise. In Assam, this history dates back to 3rd August 1937 when the first budget of Assam was introduced by the then Chief Minister, Maulavi Saiyd Sir Muhammad Saadulla and in post-independence, on 11th March 1948, the first budget was presented by the then Finance Minister, Late Bishnu Ram Medhi. It is my honour to be part of this legacy. 4. This is the first budget of our Government. We released an Assam Vision Document 2016-2021 before the assembly elections after a detail consultation process. All the points raised in the Vision Document cannot obviously - 1 - be reflected in this first budget. But we shall remain committed to all the aspects in the document and shall make honest attempt to implement them in due course of our five year tenure. 5.
