Email: [email protected] Recibido: 04.05.18 Aprobado: 23.10.18 Resumen: En tanto que busca en Macbeth una visión trascendental del ser hombre, este artículo ofrece una breve descripción de algunas de las maneras en las que Shakespeare persigue la fragmentación de las barreras de género y problematiza las representaciones masculinas tradicionales. A través del análisis comparativo de la tragedia y de la adaptación cinematográfica dirigida en 2015 por Justin Kurzel, se abordan aspectos como la violencia heroica, la sexualidad, la niñez masculina, la paternidad y la pérdida del ser humano. Al final, la incertidumbre que transmite Shakespeare y la interpretación que de ella hace Kurzel, se combinan para ilustrar un poco más el problema de la masculinidad. Palabras clave: masculinidad, literatura y cine, estereotipos masculinos, Shakespeare, ser humano Abstract: In an attempt to find in Macbeth a transcendental view of manhood, this article offers a brief description of some of the ways in which Shakespeare pursues the fragmentation of gender barriers and problematizes traditional representations of masculinity. Through a comparative analysis of the play and the 2015 film adaptation of it by Justin Kurzel, aspects such as heroic violence, sexuality, boyhood, fatherhood, and the loss of humanhood are addressed. In the end, Shakespeare’s uncertainty and Kurzel’s interpretation thereof combine in order to further illustrate the issue of masculinity.

He takes him to the safety of a Christian mission but unable to deal with the ensuing cover up, Travis leaves his police outpost and disappears into the bush. Twelve years later, 18-year-old Gutjuk hears news of the ‘wild mob’ – a renegade group of Indigenous warriors causing havoc along the frontier attacking and burning cattle stations, killing settlers. It’s said their leader is Gutjuk’s uncle, Baywara thought to be a survivor of the massacre.

    Stranded in Suburbia: Women’s Violence in Australian Cinema Janice Loreck USTRALIAN CINEMA HAS A LONG HISTORY OF DEPICTING VIOLENT MEN: FROM WAKE IN Fright (Ted Kotcheff, 1971), Mad Dog Morgan (Philippe Mora, 1976) and A Mad Max (George Miller, 1979) in the 1970s, Romper Stomper (Geoffrey Wright, 1992), Blackrock (Steven Vidler, 1997) and The Boys (Rowan Woods, 1998) in the 1990s, to Wolf Creek (Greg McLean, 2005) and Snowtown (Justin Kurzel, 2011) in the 2000s. Throughout this period, Australian cinema has paid exclusive attention to men’s violence: vigilantes, petty criminals and troubled young men in the suburbs. Felicity Holland and Jane O’Sullivan declare that these ‘lethal larrikin’ films are in discussion with concepts of Australian masculinity, ‘questioning and subverting a number of almost iconic assumptions about power, powerlessness, and violence in Australian masculine culture’ (79). In recent years, however, there has been a small but impactful cluster of films that show women acting violently, too. Suburban Mayhem (Paul Goldman, 2006), Animal Kingdom (David Michôd, 2011) and Hounds of Love (Ben Young, 2016) all contain female characters who exhibit intensely violent behaviour, committing (or conspiring to commit) acts of homicide and murder. While critics have examined men’s brutality extensively, Australian women’s aggression has not been considered in the same way (Butterss; Heller-Nicholas; Holland and O’Sullivan; O’Brien; Villella).
