Specific references will be made to the cinematic portrayal of female boxers and wrestlers in Bollywood to argue that female boxers and wrestlers are portrayed as ‘masculine’. However, the sportswoman’s assertion of her femininity in a space exclusively occupied by men leads to ‘gender trouble’. To enunciate this argument two biopics, Mary Kom (2014) and Dangal (2016), will be analyzed. It would be observed that when a female boxer/wrestler tries to reinforce her identity, she is either subjected to criticism or faces failure. However, the argument that sportswomen are termed as ‘masculine’ does not necessarily imply that female athletes aren’t objects of the male gaze.

  • Social Movements & Saving Rivers: What Can Be Learned from the Narmada?
Social movements & saving rivers: What can be learned from the Narmada? Harry Blair ([email protected]) Yale-TERI Workshop on the Yamuna River: A Confluence of Waters, a Crisis of Need 3 January 2011 Like the Yamuna, the Narmada has long been esteemed as one of India’s five most sacred rivers. And like the Yamuna, the Narmada has long been regarded by many as a place of unacceptable degradation of the environment and threat to the local human population. But while the Narmada has been the focus of a decades-long social movement protesting outside intrusions, the Yamuna thus far has not. Are there some worthwhile lessons from the Narmada experience that could inform future activity to redeem the Yamuna? This paper and conference presentation argue that a number of valuable lessons can be distilled from the Narmada saga. The principal theme of these lessons is civil society advocacy. “Civil society” can be defined as organized activity not part of the state, the private sector or the family, in which people act to promote mutual interests. “Advocacy” in turn can be defined as the process through which individuals or organizations endeavor to influence public policy making and implementation. Thus “civil society advocacy” would mean efforts on the part of civil society organizations (CSOs) to influence state behavior. Since the late 1940s, a series of plans has aimed to harness the Narmada River through dams to provide hydropower and irrigation. The centerpiece of the whole enterprise has been the last dam before the river empties into the Arabian Sea, the huge structure at Sardar Sarovar.

And the People Remain’ 186 Select Bibliography 190 PREFACE PREFACE The idea for this book arose from a visit to Kabul in March 1979 when it became immediately obvious that what was happening in Afghanistan bore little relation to reports appearing in the Western media. Further research subsequently reinforced that impression. Much of the material on which the book is based was collected in the course of my 1979 field trip which took me to India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom as well as Afghanistan and during a follow-up trip to India and Pakistan from December 1980 to January 1981. Unfortunately by then times had changed and on this second occasion the Afghan government refused me a visa. Texts of speeches and statements by Afghan leaders and other Afghan government documents have for the most part been taken from the Kabul Times, since these are in effect the official version. I have however taken the liberty where necessary of adjusting the syntax of the Afghan translator. The problem of transliteration is inescapable, and at the risk of offending the purists I have chosen what appears to be the simplest spelling of Afghan names and have tried to be consistent.
