F ASHION LIFESTYLE ART ENTERTAINMENT FEBRUARY 2010 FREE Who’s Your Zodiac Love Match? New Year Traditions Miss Vietnam Global 2009 Alex Tran Hot Designer Danny Nguyen Valentines Day Essentials yellowmags.com FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF Well, Happy New Year...again. Happy Lunar New Year, that is. February 14, 2010, is Lunar Year 4708 and what an auspicious day it is! I did some research and found that between the years 2000 and 2020, Lunar New Year falls on Valentine’s Day only once. And that is this year, the Year of the Tiger. I don’t know if there are important symbols that may be linked to this rare juxtaposition of east-west holidays, but there should be. Even when the Lunar New Year is the sole occasion for celebration, the rich symbolism that envelops it is impressive. Believe me, the pages in this issue enumerate a long list of New Year’s “Do’s and Don’ts” and a host of traditional activities intended to bring luck and prosperity. I know many of you will deploy some of the measures…just to be on the safe side. I know I will. From Miss Chinatown to Miss Vietnam Global, we have beauty in our sights this month. You may remember Alex Tran who was last month’s cover model. There was such a buzz about her photoshoot that we decided to tell you more about Alex, the winner of Miss Vietnam Global 2009. Talk about beauty and brains and personality, she has it all. In a bow to Valentine’s Day (since we have shamelessly included so much material about the Lunar New Year), Ivy Yang draws a stronger connection between hearts and love. As it turns out, the expression of love can have a profound health impact on our hearts. Just another reason to express as much love as you can on February 14th. It is the Year of the Tiger, after all, so let your love roar. All my best. And Happy New Year. Again! V. Van Hoang Photo by Collin Kelly The color yellow has played a recurrent symbolic role throughout the history of Asian culture. It symbolizes the earth that sustains all life, yet has been embraced by Buddhist monks as an expression of unchallenged power. Such is the role of yellow: always revered but in different ways under different circumstances. The mission of Yellow Magazine is to introduce our readers to the artistic , fashion, lifestyle and entertainment contributions made by Asian Americans. It is our hope that the depth and breadth of the topics and events we cover do justice to the pride that the color yellow has represented throughout the millennia. As the editor in chief of Yellow Magazine, my last name is Hoang, which also means yellow. Just as I am proud of my name, I am proud of my heritage, and proud of Yellow Magazine. Editor in Chief V.
