QUESTIONS FOR QUINN

Questions? E-mail [email protected]

Q. I’m as excited as can be expected (very) that my 21st birthday is coming up soon. The downside though is that I have a bit of a problem in planning my celebrations. I really want to take advantage of fi nally being able to go to a bar, and I really want to party with all my friends. I can’t do both because most of the people I hang out and party with are under-age. Should I try and get just the few people over 21 together and go out or should I throw a party so everyone is included?

A. First of all, you only turn 21 once. There is absolutely no rule anywhere that says you can only have one party or event; the only assumption is that the most riotous celebration will be on your actual birthday. So go ahead and hit up the bars one night and throw a party the next time. This is especially effective if you can claim two weekends with a mid-week birthday, but don’t try to stretch out your status as the center of attention any longer than a week. Second, there are ways to have a good time that gives you the best of both worlds. Instead of going to a 21 and over bar for the one time you are secretly hoping to be carded, get all your friends together and go to a restaurant or a bar and grill. Not only can you still order your “fi rst” drink, there is the added benefi t of plenty of under- aged designated drivers to get you home again. If you are absolutely stuck on the idea of either going to a bar or having a party, decide what ranks higher in your priorities: a new experience that you can now do legally whenever you want, or an old experience that is the only chance to celebrate this particular occasion with your friends.

Q. Confession: I am socially awkward. I am fairly good with most of the barely noticeable, but incredibly important elements of personal interactions. I brush my teeth; I don’t stand too close when I talk to people; I never stare. My main problem is casual conversation. I simply have no idea what to say when I talk to people; no one is ever taught “small talk” but it just seems like some people pick up on it while others don’t. Do you have any tips for the awkward “others” so we don’t have to stand around silently anymore?

A. It is actually a good thing that there are some people in the world that simply don’t contribute that much to a conversation. If you have ever seen two people that are good talkers together, you know that often they are interrupting each other to mention another thought and neither of them ends up really getting anything out of what was said. The only way to be a good conversationalist is to have the ability to listen as well as respond; you have to know when to talk just as much as what to say. Next time you fi nd yourself at the beginning of what has the potential to be a legitimate conversation, don’t simply say hi and wait for the other person to break the ensuing awkward silence that follows. If they say something other than “fi ne” to the natural inquiry of “how are you,” you have a starting point. If not, create one by asking a more direct question. Steer clear of questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no, and try to stick to topics you are interested or knowledgeable in. Good small talk should be enjoyable, not painful or boring. While your fellow chatter is responding, actually listen to what they say instead of thinking only about your next sentence; this en- sures your comments will remain relevant to shifts in topic. If you don’t have a comment, ask another question. Finally, let there be a fi nale. Conversations that go on past the point where one person is obviously trying to excuse themselves stray into the territory of awkward and painful. If you are the one that needs to leave, be polite but fi rm and then walk away. You can breathe the sigh of relief for having survived the conversation once you are out of earshot.
