QUAKER RECORDS I. Historical Background The sect was founded by George Fox about 1652. It was mostly centered in central and northern England (strongest in Westmoreland, Northwest Yorkshire and North Lancashire); expansion first into London and the southwest, Bristol, Norwich; then Scotland and Ireland and finally spread to Europe and North America. Persecution increased during the Commonwealth; William Penn was an outspoken advocate for the Quakers—in 1682 the king, Charles II, granted Fenn the right to charter a colony} and Pennsylvania-became a Quaker settlement. II. Record Sources and Time Periods Covered A. Regl;ters—The majority begin before 1669 and last until 1837. 1837-1851 registers had to be surrendered to Recording Clerk's Office, Lond:a. Before they were turned in, they were gathered at the Quake:* Society in London and duplicates were made and put into Di^^ts. They were the wives, sisters, daughters and mothers of the middle-class entrepreneurial and professional men of the region. During this period the Midlands produced individuals who expanded production and commerce, often with little technical innovation, but with a shrewd sense of what was marketable. Men such as the Wedgwoods, Boultons and Kenricks built businesses, sponsored canals and highways, and invented, produced and sold an ever-expanding supply of goods world-wide. Yet while the lives of such men have been celebrated, the women of these families have often been overlooked. -

Niedostateczna wydaje się jednak świadomość zróżnicowania dogma- tycznego i organizacyjnego wspólnot, które wyrosły na gruncie organizacji, którą 6 kwietnia 1830 r. powołał Joseph Smith Jr. Takie zagadnienia jak ciągłość objawienia, poligamia, po- glądy rasowe czy stosunek do homoseksualizmu wyznaczają dynamikę tego nurtu w jego rozwoju i obecnym kształcie. Artykuł stanowi próbę rekonstrukcji historycznych podziałów w łonie mormonizmu z uwzględnieniem ich wpływu na stan obecny tego nurtu religijnego.1 Słowa kluczowe: Joseph Smith Jr., Kościół Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostat- nich, mormonizm, poligamia Kościół Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich [The Church of Je- sus Christ of Latter-day Saints] jest niewątpliwie jedną z najprężniej działają- cych organizacji religijnych w dzisiejszym świecie. Interesujące jest, że już za prezydentury Josepha Smitha dochodziło do licznych rozłamów w organizacji kościelnej. Żadna z tych wspólnot nie przetrwała do dnia dzisiejszego. Niemniej jednak każdy z odłamów, jakie powstały zarówno za życia założyciela mormonizmu, jak i po jego śmierci, odwoływał się do ko- rzeni i uznawał siebie za prawowitego spadkobiercę idei Smitha. -

Used in conjunction with the resources at Swarthmore (see separate entry), this collection sheds light on the intersection of economic life and religious thought. Some of the greatest merchants in early America were also members of the Society of Friends (Thomas Pim [Pym] Cope, Samuel B. Morris, and the Pembertons, among others). These men enjoyed a large social network that shaped their economic ventures domestically and abroad. The records contained in this collection and the one at Swarthmore document both the lives of individual Quaker merchants and community economic practices; due to space limitations and a religious schism resulting in two separate Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, the records are divided between the Haverford collections and Swarthmore's library. Haverford’s collections consist of manuscripts, books, and periodicals written by and about the Society of Friends. Materials relate to Quaker history and practice in the Philadelphia region and also cover other parts of the United States and Great Britain, tracing Quaker origins (during the 1600s) to the present. -

Huggins This last of our three-part series examining the life and research LDS Church published Comprehensive History of the Church of Jerald Tanner, focuses on the integrity Jerald brought to his where he referred to the 1906 printing by R. B. Neal.3 It was research of Mormon historical documents. The previous two also referenced by Fawn Brodie in the original edition of No parts of this series can be found in Salt Lake City Messenger Man Knows My History. The latter source in addition had a Nos. 108 and 109, which dealt with Jerald’s initial doubts about tantalizing note to the effect that “apparently there are no copies the truthfulness of Mormonism, his conversion to Christianity, of the original extant.”4 Cowdery’s tract had supposedly been his marriage to Sandra and their early years of research and published in 1839, but the earliest available reprints came from writing on Mormonism. after 1900. The kind uncles and aunts of the race are more esteemed than its true spiritual fathers and mothers. I once heard a reverend lecturer on England, a man of learning and intelligence, after enumerating her scientific, literary, and political worthies, Shakspeare, Bacon, Cromwell, Milton, Newton, and others, speak next of her Christian heroes, whom, as if his profession required it of him, he elevated to a place far above all the rest, as the greatest of the great. They were Penn, Howard, and Mrs. Fry. Every one must feel the falsehood and cant of this. The last were not England’s best men and women; only, perhaps, her best philanthropists.
