Niedostateczna wydaje się jednak świadomość zróżnicowania dogma- tycznego i organizacyjnego wspólnot, które wyrosły na gruncie organizacji, którą 6 kwietnia 1830 r. powołał Joseph Smith Jr. Takie zagadnienia jak ciągłość objawienia, poligamia, po- glądy rasowe czy stosunek do homoseksualizmu wyznaczają dynamikę tego nurtu w jego rozwoju i obecnym kształcie. Interesujące jest, że już za prezydentury Josepha Smitha dochodziło do licznych rozłamów w organizacji kościelnej. Żadna z tych wspólnot nie przetrwała do dnia dzisiejszego. Niemniej jednak każdy z odłamów, jakie powstały zarówno za życia założyciela mormonizmu, jak i po jego śmierci, odwoływał się do ko- rzeni i uznawał siebie za prawowitego spadkobiercę idei Smitha. -

Huggins This last of our three-part series examining the life and research LDS Church published Comprehensive History of the Church of Jerald Tanner, focuses on the integrity Jerald brought to his where he referred to the 1906 printing by R. B. Neal.3 It was research of Mormon historical documents. The previous two also referenced by Fawn Brodie in the original edition of No parts of this series can be found in Salt Lake City Messenger Man Knows My History. The latter source in addition had a Nos. 108 and 109, which dealt with Jerald’s initial doubts about tantalizing note to the effect that “apparently there are no copies the truthfulness of Mormonism, his conversion to Christianity, of the original extant.”4 Cowdery’s tract had supposedly been his marriage to Sandra and their early years of research and published in 1839, but the earliest available reprints came from writing on Mormonism. after 1900. This naturally represented a challenge to Jerald and Sandra’s circle of friends to see if they could find an original copy. erald Tanner’s research was always In late 1960 Pauline Hancock, centered in determining the truth, not pastor of the little Church of Christ in Jjust uncovering problems in LDS Independence, Missouri, received a claims. In March 1831, John Whitmer “was appointed by the voice of the Elders” in Kirtland “to keep the Church Record.” (Courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City.) Scott C. Esplin 3 “A History of All the Important Things” (D&C 69:3): John Whitmer’s Record of Church History ohn Whitmer’s tenure as church historian began inauspiciously Jand ended acrimoniously. Charged “by the voice of the Elders to keep the Church Record,” Whitmer’s reaction was, “I would rather not do it.” But he would comply, he said, if the Lord mani- fested his will “through Joseph the Seer.”1 In March 1831, Joseph Smith received a revelation directing John to “write and keep a regular history . [and] to keep the church record and history con- tinually” (D&C 47:1, 3). Eight months later, Whitmer was further counseled through revelation to “continue in writing and making a history” (D&C 69:3). These directives formed the basis for his record, “the Book of John Whitmer, kept by commandment.”2 Though John Whitmer began his history with the goal of recording “all the important things which he shall observe and Scott C. Career Apostates: Reflections on the Works of Jerald and Sandra Tanner Lawrence Foster or more than two decades, Jerald and Sandra Tanner have devoted I their lives to exposing and trying to destroy Mormonism. They have succeeded in upsetting Mormons of various persuasions, largely because of their abrasive writing style, a style which is most nearly reminiscent of FBI under- cover agents reporting back to J. Edgar Hoover on the terrible continuing threat of the world-wide communist (read: Mormon) conspiracy. Yet the Tanners have been more than simply gadflies; in curious and often indirect ways, their work has also been a factor helping to stimulate serious Mormon historical writing. In addition to publishing many hard-to-find Mormon his- torical documents, their criticisms have highlighted issues that professional Mormon historians, operating from a very different perspective, have also sought to address. Despite the importance of the Tanners in these and in other ways, to date I know of no fully convincing scholarly assessment of their activities and sig- nificance. Mormon scholars have tended to shy away from public discussion of this controversial topic; anti-Mormon supporters of the Tanners have pro- duced little but uncritical praise; while non-Mormons who know anything about the Tanners have wondered what all the fuss was about.1 As a non- Copyright © 1984 by Lawrence Foster. Hansen has observed that "Mormonism in 19?*+ differs fundamentally from the Mormonism of 1890 even though no theo retical change in doctrine may have occurred."* This fundamental differ ence is obvious to any person who has studied the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with any degree of intensity. Many would attribute the changes the Church has undergone since its organiza tion in 1830 to the influence of contemporary secular forces. The Mormon Church is not the first religion to feel the effects of secularism. The major protestant and Catholic Churches have undergone degrees of secu larizing in past centuries. The intellectual enlightenment of the Age of Reason was directly opposed by the Catholic Church, which viewed advances in science and the openness of intellectual inquiry with dis trust and suspicion, ^uch things were not only dangerous to faith, but also tended to weaken the authoritarian grip with which the Church compelled obedience from its members. Ernst Benz, professor of religion at the University of Marburg, Germany, notes that most sociologists understand secularization as a process through which: religion in all its historical forms is more and more disappearing from modern society and from the consciousness of modern man, which means that modern life and secularization are identical.
