Crawford A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Performance Studies University of Sydney 2015 ABSTRACT This study adopts an ethnographic and—in part—autoethnographic stance in the observation of professional rehearsal rooms, with a view to identifying the division of interests and responsibilities of actors working in mainstream Australian theatre. From a position of intense professional locatedness as an actor and acting teacher, I examine and interpret rehearsal practices utilising an ethnographic rubric that embraces the legacies of Pierre Bourdieu, Clifford Geertz, and Michael Jackson, and through the lens of my own experience. The study pursues a centripetal action, beginning with a focus on industrial and social realities, toward an identification of distinctions between artistic and fictive concerns, and so identifies three notional compasses: symbolic spaces that actors occupy in their journeys through professional engagements. These are: the political compass, representing industrial and social restrictions and liberations; the artistic compass, lying within the political, enormously divergent, and determined by the nature of the text under pursuit, and the influence of the director; the fictive compass, lying wholly within the artistic, which is found to be of a consistency and reliability that belies its prominence in the canonical literature on the craft of acting, particularly in the Stanislavskian tradition. That is to say, these actors in rehearsal are found to concern themselves most consistently and reliably with artistic challenges, as distinct from fictive challenges, and in the constant light of their industrial and social circumstances. Along this centripetal path, notions of acquiescence, compliance, agency, mystery, roguery, epistemology, democracy, friendship, loneliness, and phenomenology are encountered and examined in the context of actors’ weird working lives. Finally, claims are made for actors as artists, and these claims are held to the light of prevailing industrial structures that, perhaps, neither admit nor utilise the actor as artist. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This study has been a deep pleasure and privilege to undertake. Alirio goes to behind the production desk to look at the set plans in order to figure out where he enters from and what the entrance will look like. Having established an answer, he and the director are content for him to sit down, take the entrance “as read”, and move onto the next scene: a virtual rehearsal (Pin, 31-5-12, wk1). The above moment, ten weeks into my fifteen weeks of observing rehearsals, was a signal moment in the process of this study. It was startling, bamboozling, tantalising, and finally clarifying. It sustained through the following years of thinking, reading, and writing, as an emblem and a kind of haunting. I asked, and continue to ask, What kind of activity is a rehearsal when an actor can look at a map on a desk, point to the map, agree with the director on a path, then assume the rehearsal done? Although this was a radical manifestation of rehearsal behaviour, it nonetheless sheds light— in its extremism—on more regular practices.

The Child Catcher Many aren’t aware, but the character of the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was added into Ian Fleming’s original story by Roald Dahl; a truly terrifying addition that still has us freaked out to this day. The role was played by Robert Helpmann, who used to take out his top set of false teeth during filming to make himself look more gaunt; this also created the hissed tones in his voice that used to fill our nightmares. 3. Miss Trunchbull We’re not sure what scares us more, being swung around the playground by our pigtails or enduring a spell in the ‘chokey’ for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Either way, we wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of Matilda’s Miss Trunchbull! Watching Pam Ferris snort and charge like a bull in the 1996 film is enough to put any child off misbehaving; apparently she used to stay in character on set to scare all the children and make sure their fear was genuine when the camera was rolling! 4.

Introduction Seeds of Awareness This book is inspired by an undergraduate course called “Music, Art, and Theology,” one of the most popular classes I teach and probably the course I’ve most enjoyed teaching. The reasons for this may be as straightforward as they are worthy of lament. In an era when study of the arts has become a practical afterthought, a “luxury” squeezed out of tight education budgets and shrinking liberal arts curricula, people intuitively yearn for spaces where they can explore together the landscape of the human heart opened up by music and, more generally, the arts. All kinds of people are attracted to the arts, but I have found that young adults especially, seeking something deeper and more worthy of their questions than what they find in highly quantitative and STEM-oriented curricula, are drawn into the horizon of the ineffable where the arts take us. Across some twenty-five years in the classroom, over and over again it has been my experience that young people of diverse religious, racial, and economic backgrounds, when given the opportunity, are eager to plumb the wellsprings of spirit where art commingles with the divine-human drama of faith. From my childhood to the present day, my own spirituality1 or way of being in the world has been profoundly shaped by music, not least its capacity to carry me beyond myself and into communion with the mysterious, transcendent dimension of reality.

Added to this, there is evidence of significant existential restlessness. Moreover, many individuals feel alienated from the Church, which has been the historic Western provider of a discourse offering ontological security. Such restlessness finds emotional expression within a popular music culture that frequently interrogates Christian belief. It is argued here that not only is there a hegemonic resistance to Christian discourse, but that the Church inadvertently colludes with these forces, favouring its historic, rationalistic methods of evangelism, the effectiveness of which is now limited. This thesis offers a model to redress aspects of this disconnect, arguing for the significance of affective spaces within which spiritual reflection is encouraged. Using Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology of liquid modernity the thesis considers the fluid nature of Western society. In particular, it explores the ways in which popular music articulates core themes in a society in which individuals are effectively bricoleurs, drawing from popular culture in order to tactically resist hegemony. Central to the discussion is the idea that humans are ‘hard wired’ to develop a sense of self in a proto-musical manner.

NATHAN: INTRODUCTION In 1999, a teenage college dropout finished writing software for an internet service called Napster that would allow people to swap music stored on their computers. Six months after the service was released, 18 record companies filed a lawsuit to shut it down. Since then, content- sharing websites have proliferated. Listening to music obtained free from others over the internet has become increasingly common; so too have lawsuits that pit corporate copyright owners against emergent online service providers in disputes over the use of copyrighted musical works. This is such a lawsuit. Before the Court is the plaintiff EMI’s motion for summary judgment on its copyright infringement claims against Escape Media Group, which operates the free music-streaming website Grooveshark.com. Like many recent copyright lawsuits against online service providers, this case turns not on whether Grooveshark exploits EMI’s copyrighted works without Case 1:12-cv-06646-AJN-SN Document 90 Filed 05/28/14 Page 2 of 80 authorization, but on whether Escape can secure immunity from monetary liability for any infringing activity under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. After considering the papers submitted in support of and in opposition to EMI’s summary judgment motion, as well as the arguments advanced by the parties at the April 29, 2014 hearing, the Court recommends that EMI’s motion for summary judgment be GRANTED IN PART and DENIED IN PART.
