The Father of the House in the current (2019) Parliament is Sir Peter Bottomley, who was first elected to the House in a by-election in 1975. Under Standing Order No 1, as long as the Father of the House is not a Minister, he takes the Chair when the House elects a Speaker. He has no other formal duties. There is evidence of the title having been used in the 18th century. However, the origin of the term is not clear and it is likely that different qualifications were used in the past. The Father of the House is not necessarily the oldest Member. -

RECONNECTING LABOUR SUMMARY OF INITIAL FINDINGS DAN JARVIS MP KEY POINTS Labour has been in denial for too long about the challenges posed by UKIP. They cost Labour a lot of votes in constituencies we needed to win back from the Tories and they won a lot of votes in Labour heartland seats. There are no quick fixes for stemming the rise of UKIP, but we won’t achieve it by out-UKIPing UKIP or our-Torying the Tories, nor by lurching to the left to make ourselves feel better but do nothing for those who have lost faith in us. We need to revitalise local party engagement, recruit candidates from more representative backgrounds, and make it clear what we stand for as a Party and our policy response must include reassurance on issues like work and immigration, an economic plan to extend opportunity to communities that feel forgotten, a distinct message for older people, and reclaiming our mantle as a patriotic party. 1 INTRODUCTION The first step towards solving any problem is acknowledging that one exists in the first place. Frankly, the devastating nature of the General Election result has presented Labour with no shortage of challenges. Labour didn’t just lose an election on May 7th – we lost our connection with millions of people across the country. As we look to renew and rebuild, we know we need to win back votes from the Tories. But it is also clear they are not the only opponents we need to overcome across England and Wales. Labour needs to tackle UKIP too. -

At a time of extreme inequality, the Tories’ promise more tax cuts for the wealthy, and more spending cuts on our schools and on the vulnerable. They promised jobs but the jobs did not show up, the incomes did not rise and our schools and other vital public services got savaged. Since 2010, my council has lost over half its budget and with this Tory government it will continue to get worse, by 2020 we will have just a third of the funding we used to have. -

TUC London, East and South East Annual report 2018 . About the regional TUC ‘TUC: London East and the South East’ is the largest of the TUC’s regions and geographically we cover three European parliamentary constituencies or what were the government office regions: London, the South East, and East of England. Perhaps as many as two million trade unionists live and work within the region. Our regional council is appointed annually by trade our union affiliates and by county associations of trades councils. It meets four times a year to discuss both how to achieve policy determined at the annual national Trades Union Congress, and to make policies on issues specific to, or affecting, our region. At the regional council’s annual general meeting it elects its officers, and an executive committee that meets ten times a year. The officers and executive committee members serve for a year. Affiliated trade unions and county associations of trades councils also nominate to our industrial and equality sub-groups. These advisory sub-groups use their expertise, workplace and life experience to inform the activities of the regional council. In order to assist in our work fostering and supporting trade unionism in our region outside of London we have created the East of England Trade Union Network, EETUN, and the South East Trade Union Network, SETUN, within the structures of the regional TUC. Regional staff administer the regional council, deliver services to affiliates, represent the TUC in relations with public bodies, campaign for Congress policies, and support the delivery of learning and education to workers in the region. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 F 7377 POLITI 58^S8i ABSTRACT The British left has confronted a dilemma in forming its attitude towards Israel in the postwar period. The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath. -

The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP 30 January 2020 Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA Dear Prime Minister, We are writing to you as a group of cross-party parliamentarians to express our grave concern over the contents of US President Donald Trump’s so-called ‘peace plan’ for Israel and the Palestinians. The plan presented on 28 January shows contempt for the rights of the Palestinian people and international law, and provides no realistic basis for a return to negotiations. Instead, it makes peace less likely, and threatens to undermine a fundamental principle of the post-WWII international legal order: the prohibition of annexation and territorial conquest. The long-standing position of the UK is that a negotiated peace settlement must be agreed to achieve a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, leading to a safe and secure Israel living alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state that has secure and recognised borders, and with Jerusalem as a shared capital of both states. The vision presented by the US administration is one where Palestinians would have none of these: no true shared capital in Jerusalem, no sovereign control of its borders or security, and with Israeli control far beyond the Green Line. As a group of 16 UK charities warned this week: “if implemented [the plan] will lead to the formal annexation of Palestinian land, perpetual Israeli occupation, and the negation of Palestinians’ collective right to self-determination.” It is a plan that the Palestinians have no choice but to reject if they wish to maintain their fundamental rights, but that they will be punished for not accepting. -
