Dear Minnesota State HIgh School Coaches Association, Words cannot express my gratitude for the honor of receiving the Val Teichroew scholarship; however, I would still like to personally thank you all for selecting me. Of course the financial aspect of this scholarship is greatly appreciated as it will assist me in achieving my education goals and dreams, but the meaning behind this scholarship makes it even more remarkable. I now am aware and grateful towards Val’s efforts in the MSHSCGS as she truly changed the lives of every past, present, and future female athlete of Minnesota. Without her hard work and dedication, I would not have had the opportunities to play the game I love, along with many other countless female individuals. Once again, I would like to extend my greatest thanks to the MSHSCA for choosing me to represent them and Val Teichroew with this scholarship, and Val for the trademark she has left on girls sports in Minnesota forever impacting mine and all other female athletes’ lives for years to come. After the Game Bring Your Team to 38 MINNESOTA PREP COACH Goal Posts By: Ron Stolski - Brainerd FINAL MEMBERSHIP Exec. Director MFCA REPORT 2017-18 Fellow Keepers, It is Fall and it is football. In the Spring issue Types of Membership of the Prep Coach and our Goal Posts article, I 2016- 2017 2017-18 mentioned that, as educators, it is our responsibility Active Class A & AA 6022 6383 to inform the public as to the overall value of the College Associates 1180 1132 educational experience of playing football and the Other Associates 78 81 part it plays in the fabric of our life. As this is written this morning, the Minneapolis Active Life 340 362 devotes 6 pages of its 8 page Sports section to football; three of Retired Life 1334 1228 which were articles strictly about high schools. I suspect , every Honorary 3 3 hometown newspaper in the state has a similar ratio. Make no TOTAL 8948 9181 mistake about it, football, despite detractors, is alive, well, and important! Breakdown of membership by sport association (2016- Are there challenges, of course. I submit that there is no one 17 totals in parenthesis) better to address them than those of us in the huddle. We are the keepers. We must not “wring our hands.’ Football has always Adapted Athletics (17) 15 been under some sort of attack, yet it remains the one game that Boys Lacrosse (100) 95 captures the heart and soul of our neighborhoods, our schools, our communities, our country. Let’s take a look at the ‘why’ and Alpine Skiing (60) 53 then cite how so many are addressing the “how’ of continuing to Girls Lacrosse (69) 61 teach and support the value of and for kids who continue to play Athletic Directors (99) 106 America’s game. Football (1123) 1130 Football remains a distinctive piece of the fabric of our Baseball (524) 541 society. It is unique in a number of ways. Here are a few. We Football Retired 4 have a season defined by the number of weeks on the schedule, Boys Basketball (773) 767 August to November. We cannot and do not play football year Girls Basketball (696) 744 around. Arguably, it may be the only sport left that is about the Golf (boys & girls) (320) 348 school. A place where the locker room forms the brotherhood. Cross Country (439) 427 It has multiple entry points. All shapes and sizes can come with heart in hand at whatever age level. Is it the only sport with Soccer (boys & girls) (431) 442 ‘Homecoming’? We may be one of the only sports left that is Dance (15) 284 not being driven by zealots from outside the school; the last Softball (483) 516 scholastic sport where the coach actually matters. Etc., etc. Gymnastics (212) 214 According to the latest national federation survey, high school Synchronized Swimming (21) 15 football participation decreased by 2.5%. There is well over a Nordic Skiing (125) 106 million students playing football and an INCREASE of 52 Girls Tennis (214) 225 schools participating. It amounted to 1.8 players PER TEAM Girls Swimming (243) 241 nationwide. And, football has over 400,000 more participants Boys Tennis (181) 180 than the next nearest, Track and Field. Hardly a dropout Boys Swimming (207) 203 epidemic. Our own MFCA survey indicates that roughly 71% of reporting schools saw a slight decrease, remained the same, Track & Field (816) 875 or increased Girls Hockey (77) 87 So, what are you, we, doing to see that our game not only Volleyball (663) 642 remains, but thrives. How are we reacting to the challenge? By Boys Hockey (206) 203 nature, coaches are competitors and innovators. I am encouraged Wrestling (113) 126 by the many of you who are adopting new methods to face the Hockey Retired 2 challenge of participation, and enhancing the experience that our game provides to so many.
