Fans of The Simpsons Hank Azaria know him as the man behind the voices of ill-tempered bartender Moe Syzslak, gluttonous police chief Chauncey Wiggum, sad-sack Comic Book Guy, hillbilly Cletus Spuckler and America’s favorite convenience store clerk, Apu (“Thank you come again”) Nahasapeemapetilon. Azaria’s over- the-top film roles include fork-flinging superhero The Blue Raja ( Mystery Men ), 1950s sports legend Patches O’Houlihan ( Dodge Ball ), megalo- maniacal pharaoh Kahmunrah ( Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ) and inept houseboy Agador Spartacus ( The Birdcage ). • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

His only WRB loss was to Rubicon in 2016 which was a close match up until the third round where Rubicon got lucky with an uppercut that knocked out NOISY BOY. His last fight was lost to MIDAS, at Crash Palace where Noisy lost his right arm and head. Noisy’s head was welded on the exit of Crash Palace. • Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions
Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I. INTRODUCTION The Whacky World of Jonathan Winters aired on television from 1972 through 1974.1 The humor of its star, Jonathan Winters,2 came primarily “from his construction of outrageously fantastic situations and characters.”3 Those characters included the Oldest Airline Stewardess4 and, perhaps most notably, ⊗ Professor & Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and Director of the Marion B.
