This is the most important fixture in our divisional GAA calendar and I hope we get a game deserving of the occasion. In welcoming the teams and their mentors, I should also like to extend a hearty cead mile failte to all our patrons and wish them an exciting and enjoy able encounter between the two sides. I want to give a special welcome to John Carew of Carew Investments, the spon Sors of our Senior Hurling Championship. This is the first year the Board has sought sponsorship for its championships and leagues and.t is extremely thank ful to the many who have come forward with sponsorship. The Board would like to express thanks to all its sponsors and on this occasion to Carew Investments for the very generous sponsorship. In thanking the sponsors I would like to appeal to all our patrons to give our sponsors the support they deserve. This is the first time since 1987 that Leahy Park, Cashel has played host to a West Final. It will appear strange to many that what is probably the premier venue in the division hasn't been used for the premier fixture in a decade. This has been due to Cashel's success in that period. contesting eight of the ten finals played. But, It is also due to the practice in this division of rotating the final in about ten different venues, regardless of whether the venue is central for the competing teams. In the paslten years only four teams, Cashel, Clonoulty, Cappawhite and Kickhams have contested the Senior Final. There is a strong argument for selecting a number of venues to host senior finals. Although in danger of gelling a belt 01 a hurley, I would like to state that the number should be limited 10 Cashel, Golden, Dundrum and Cappawhile. TOday is the first time since 1984 that Cappawhite and Kickhams have clashed in a West Final. On that occasion Cappa were successful and were in the middle of a great period of club strength which brought them Divisional success in 1983, 1984,1985 and 1987, plus county success in the lalter year. Twice since then. in 1989 and 1991, they have contested the final without success. In contrast, Kickhams have had no success. Their last victory was in 1960 and defeat has been their lot in six finals since then, 1962, 1977, 1984, 1988, 1993 and 1995. As I have said before, the worm has to turn sometime and there is a respectable bOdy of belief that today will be the day and that Kickhams Will shake off the

3 frustrations and defeats of so many years. Whatever the outcome, the hurling must be the winner and the game must be contested within the rules of the game. That is why the referee is such an important person in interpreting the rules and protecting the players. John Ryan is refereeing his first senior Final today and the Board has the fullest confidence in his ability to fulfil his role . with everyone's co-operation we can have a very enjoyable game, which can be remembered for all the right reasons. Finally, a special word of thanks to our PRO, J.J. Kennedy, Secretary Jerry Ring and all who contributed to the production of this programme, especially our advertisers.

Today's West Tipp senior hurling final will always be a treasured memory for whichever side wins, but it's also an historic occasion for the division. It's the 68th West Senior Huriing Championship but the very first to carry the name of a commercial sponsor - John Ca rew Investments.

With sponsorship now the norm in sport it was inevitable that the West Division would eventually follow the trend. However when the West Board sought sponsorship earlier in the year they could hardly have banked on finding such a suitable backer. Their search paid a rich dividend when John Carew threw his moral and financial weight behind the Division's premier competition.

John's willingness to back the West Championship is indicative of his interest in the games and his native Division. Formerly from Dundrum and now living in Cion mel, he has had years of involvement with the GAA. While in Dundrum he was deeply immersed in the Kickham Juvenile Club, and St. Mary's, Cion mel, are now the beneficiaries of a similar involvement.

Carew Investments have earned a popular reputation as Investment Brokers of the highest calibre. They offer impartial advice on Life Assurance, Mortgages, Pensions, Lump Sum investments etc., dealing with all the leading financial institutions. Drawing on a deep well of experience they can negotiate the best possible deal for their clients with all the major money lending establishments.

Brokerage is in the family genes. John's late father, Patrick Carew, was a Cashel based insurance broker for many years stretching back to the fifties and his son, John junior, at present works with Royal Liver in Cion mel. The West Division was indeed fortunate to lind such a backer for its hurling championship and in return readily urges its patrons to support our sponsor - John Carew Investments.

6 West Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship Fin al Kickhams 15th or Cappawhite's 6th by Leonard Fitzgerald

For many years Knockavitla Kickhams stood in majes tic isolation as outright leaders in the West Senior Championship table and thereby embellished a domi nance in the grade against all existing opposition. Since the 1960 showdown they have suffered a drought 01 success and have wailed anxiously to ban ish the longesl famine in the Divisional Championship. If Ihal is to be made possible, Joe McGrath and his troops will need all their reserves to break that baron spell. This Kickhams outfit are warriors of a new generation and are no strangers to West Senior Final appearances. 1993 and 1995, both defeats to their arch rivals Cashel. teft their brave efforts lorn with anguish and uller disappointment at falling at the final hurdle. Surly now, their hunger for success is at a climatic high! For Cappawhite its a whole new ball game with a band 01 youth their greatest asset and their rebuilding process yielding much promise. Eugene O'Neill, Thomas Costello and Pat O'Neill are presently hurling with supreme maturity with the confidence and discipline of players ten years their senior. Its a mixture of youth and experience that the big question is, have they the greater hunger and determination to carry the day? Cappawhite's last final appearance was in '991 at the expense of a Tommy Grogan inspired Cashel. Tommy pointed ten placed balls on that occasion. There are only seven of that Cappa side present in loday's panel. John "Fox" O'Neill, the bearer of 4 West Senior medals is the tactician at the helm. He first took charge in 1993 with a squad that required a huge boost of confidence. In February 1997, he decided upon the radical approach to improve their Illness level with the inclusion of a top-class fitness instructor and regular work-out sessions in the University of Limerick to accelerate fitness levels. His motivation was to be rewarded. He instilled a killer· instinct which was absent in previous years. This was most evident in their second half performance against bogeymen, Cashel, where a combination of pure heart and determination was sufficient to defeat the King Cormacs. Cappawhite are coming of age and it's mainly due to the ability of current Tipperary panelist and scorer-in-chief Eugene O'Neill who has been justifying his immense ta lent in his performances thus far. His tally of 3-8 against GoldenlKilfeacle in the opening round gives a clear indica tion that he's the source to all Cappa's game plans. Kickhams also have their trump-cards to play with Kevin Farrell, , and the addition of Anthony Qualler having the greatest prospects. For years on end, Kickhams have bred solid material at under-age level and with 7 a continuous coaching programme, success multiplied. Unfortunately their promo tion to Senior level have not beared fruit. In the last number of years a County Minor 'B' football, U/2 1 'A' Hurling and Intermediate titles at both codes were rewards for their brave efforts. However, senior titles are the core to every club's success! They have now a stronger more confident, proven side, well tutored by Joe McGrath. With a tight defence and pacy forwards they put up a promising lead against Clonoulty/Rossmore in the semi-final that they subsequently never relin guished. The dismissal may have been controversial but the victory for Kickhams was their first priority and their opponents resulting sacrifice. After Phil Lowry's departure and no West tille to boast about, Joe McGrath was approached and included in the Kickhams format. His managerial record at both club and county level is unattainable. Born in Downpatrick in County Down and presently residing in County Cork, his status as coach gave Kickhams a renewed potential. He coached the Blackrock club side in the seventies to 5 County titles .. 5 Munster Club titles and 3 All-Ireland titles in 1972. '74 and '79. He also coached the Limerick Seniors around the same period to success with an Oireachtas National League and finally All-Ireland honours in 1973. In 1983 he helped the Cork footbaUers make the breakthrough in Munster against the mighty Kingdom of Kerry and further guided the Cork U/21's toAIl-lreland success in 1988. He finally attempted to rekindle some hope for the Decies in the '90's, but his two year term ended with no return. However, it promises to be an exciting final and with the first novel pairing since 1986 without Cashel or Clonoulty battfing for Divisional honours. A final can become a monopoly with the least expected being the exact consequences. Best of luck to both sides and may the eventual winners honour the West Division with pride and passion in the forthcoming County Championships.

8 1962 RECALLED Cappawhite's First West Title by J.J. Kennedy hirty five years 8g0, in 1962, Kickhams and Cappawhile met in a West final for the firsllime ever. By then Kickhams were in decline, their golden age having ended in 1960, and Cappawhite were on the upswing having shared divisional honours in Tpartnership with Solohead and Glengar (51. Nicholas') in 1957 and with Eire 09 (81. Vincent's) in 1961 . This time Cappa affiliated as a single club although having the considerable benelit 01 three Glengar stalwarts, Mutt Ryan (Goff), Harry Bradshaw and Jim Buckley. The final was played at Golden on September 9th and became the first decider in the his tory of the division to end in a draw, each side scoring a mere 1·4 apiece. The following Sunday the teams returned to Golden and this time Cappa' came of age rattling in 5-8 with Kickhams managing a mere 2-1 in reply. Cappawhite had at last inscribed their name on the O'Dwyer Cup. The 'Tipperary Star' report on the game praised the winners in the following terms: "Paul McCarthy in goal for the new champions had a glorious hour. Connors, Carew and Ryan (G) were a very sound full-back line. Larry Kelly at centre-back also had a great game. The cousins, RYan Smiths, Con and Tom, who flanked Larry could do nothing wrong. Man of the Match was Cappawhite's captain, Harry Bradshaw, who from the throw-in was a real trouble maker for the Kickhams .... Jack Hogan, who assisted Harry at centre·lield, had a good hour. T. J. 'Moxer' McGrath al centre·forward was in rare form and it looked as if nothing could keep up with him except maybe a Jel. Jim Buckley on the right was most impressive and on the left .... Jim McGrath, in the first half, put over four points .... He certainly came next to Bradshaw as the match winner. Cappawhite's full line of Eamonn Hayes at lull, Tom Breen in the right corner and J.J. White in the left seems to have said when they went out onto the field we have a job to do and right well they did it." The match, incidentally was refereed by Phillip Ryan of Boherlahan. Donal O'Brien captained the Kickham team that day. A fortnight earlier, September 2nd, he had claimed his second successive AII·lreland Senior Hurling Medal when playing in goal for Tipperary in their All-Ireland final win over Wexford. The previous year they beat Dublin in the final. Jim McGrath who starred on the Cappawhite team of '62 is an uncle to Leonard Fitzgerald who plays wing·back for Cappa' today but that is the sole family link between the two sides. The links between Ihe Kickhams side of '62 and today's team. though, are many. Tommy Kelly played comer back in '62 and is today selector with the team, while his son, Vincent, plays an important onfield role. John Butler was wing·back in '62 and today three of his sons, Ger, Johnny and Aidan are central to Kickhams' bid to span a thirty·seven year gap. was midfield in '62 and today his sons, Tony and Kevin carry the burden of hope while his nephew, Jimmy, faces the onerous task of policing Eugene O'Neill. Jim McCormack played in the drawn tie In '62 but missed the replay; his son, John, maintains the family link today. John's uncle, Tom was lull·back in the '62 defeal. Finally, Davy Ryan played wing· forward in '62 • his nephew, Barry, maintains the family tradition today. A nalive of Oola, Co. Limerick. John has spent all his working life in . A member of the Garda Siochana, John was stationed in Nenagh, Golden, Roscrea and Templemore before being transferred to Cashel in 1987. In his earlier years John was equally adept at hurling and football. He played his football with Oola and his hurling with Doon and was part of a very successful team of players with the latter club, winning County Championships at under 14, 16, minor and under 21 level. His prowess in both games was reflected at county level when he played minor and under 21 for Limerick in hurling and football. He started his playing career with Cashel King Cormacs in 1988 and became a member of a team that was to have unprecedented success for a number of years. During this period John won six divisional Senior Hurling Medals, two of them in a full-forward position and the remainder as goal keeper. He was on the successful side thaI won a first County Final in 1991 and he went on to win a Munster Club Medal. John started refereeing at school level as early as 1988 and gradually worked his way up the ranks. To date he has refereed at all grades in the division and officiated at finals. He has also refereed in minor and under 21 grades at County level. This is his first Senior Final. John is the 6th Cashel man 10 referee the final following in the footsteps of Mick Dargan (1930). Mick Burke (1938), Mick Coady (1954), Jim Devitt (1959,1963) and Aengus Ryan (1987). Married 10 Tess and Ihe father of four children, John does nol confine him self to hurling and football. A keen golfer, he also finds time for rugby and lines out regularly wilh Kilfeacle. We wish him the best today in his first Senior Hurling Final.

Both sides have a good blend of youth and age, and a great evenings hurling is in prospect. An added dimension to this evenings final is the fact that the losers will have to lake on Clonoulty/Rossmore for the right to be the second team to represent West Tipperary in the County Senior Hurling Quarter Finals. I also wish to thank the West Board officials, Seamus and Jerry Ring for their help in producing this programme. I thank all our contributors and I ask you to support our sponsors and advertisers. You are all most welcome to Cashel of the Kings and may you have an entertaining, sporting evening,
