NFL ANNUAL REPORT 2014 18 19 NFL ANNUAL REPORT 2014 DIVISION 2 REVIEW

Third time’s a charm – and so the idiom proved for North Heidelberg in 2014.

After second and third-place fi nishes in their fi rst two seasons in Division 2, the Bulldogs claimed the premiership at their third attempt – the triumph their fi rst senior fl ag since upsetting Heidelberg in the 2005 Division 1 Grand Final.

The standout side throughout the season, North had to endure the long route to the Grand Final after a second semi fi nal loss to Fitzroy Stars. However, it didn’t prevent it from claiming a seventh senior premiership, rising to the occasion when it mattered most.

With North occupying fi rst place on the ladder for the entire season, much of the drama in Division 2 centred around a four-way scrap to avoid bottom place on the ladder. It’s safe to say there has never been a relegation battle quite like this year’s.

Epping, Diamond Creek, Panton Hill and Hurstbridge were locked inside the bottom four for much of the season, with just four points and minimal percentage separating the sides heading into the fi nal round.

Round 18 pitted Panton Hill and Hurstbridge against top-four sides Mernda and Lalor respectively, while sixth-placed Epping simply needed to avoid a loss of 29 points or more at home to bottom-placed Diamond Creek to stave off relegation.

In a thrilling day of football – where the relegation battle overshadowed a top of the table clash between North Heidelberg and Fitzroy Stars – both Hurstbridge and Panton Hill upset more fancied rivals to ensure their place in Division 2 next year. The last match to fi nish was at Epping Recreation Reserve, where Diamond Creek defi ed the odds by trouncing Epping by 77 points to avoid the drop.

The result handed Epping an unwanted record as it became the fi rst club in league history to suffer successive relegations. In 2013 the Blues were relegated from Division 1 by 2.90 per cent. In 2014 the differential was 4.31 per cent.

The dramatic fi nal round was a pre-cursor to an equally dramatic fi nals series. In week one, Fitzroy Stars advanced to a second successive Grand Final after reversing a 35-point fi nal round loss to North Heidelberg, with a 26-point win at Whittlesea Showgrounds. The following day Mernda advanced to the preliminary fi nal after holding off a fi nal quarter charge from Lalor in the fi rst semi fi nal.

NFL ANNUAL REPORT 2014 28 DIVISION 3 AWARDS

The Division 3 best and fairest was tied for the fi rst time in the competition’s six-year history, with Thomastown’s Matthew Cupo and Reservoir’s Danny O’Sullivan sharing the award in 2014. The duo each polled 17 votes to fi nish three votes ahead of South Morang co-captain Mitchell Buckley. Heidelberg West utility James McLean-Brunton and Thomastown forward Jacob Osei-Duro fi nished in equal-third place on 12 votes. In a grandstand fi nish to the voting, O’Sullivan led Cupo and Buckley by three votes heading into the fi nal round of the home and away season. This left the door ajar for Cupo and he didn’t let the opportunity pass by. The 24-year-old polled maximum votes in Thomastown’s fi nal-round victory over Heidelberg West to claim a share of the best and fairest award. Cupo will long look back on 2014 as his breakout season in senior football. Amongst his accolades were the competition best and fairest, the best on ground medallion in Thomastown’s Grand Final win over Reservoir, Thomastown’s best and fairest award and selection as ruck-rover in the Division 3 Team of the Year.
