Pope: Death of Iraqi archbishop ‘act of inhuman violence’ VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI called the kidnapping and death of an Iraqi archbishop “an act of inhuman violence that offends the dignity of the human being and seriously harms the … coexistence among the beloved Iraqi people.” Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho of Mosul, 65, was kidnapped Feb. 29 in an attack that left his driver and two bodyguards dead. The pope had made several public appeals for his release. Catholic leaders in Iraq said March 13 that they had recovered the archbishop’s body after the kidnappers told them where they had buried him. In a March 13 telegram to Cardinal Emmanuel-Karim Delly of Baghdad, patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, Pope Benedict said that after being informed of “the tragic death” of the archbishop, whom he called a “zealous pastor,” he wanted to let Chaldean Catholics and all Christians in Iraq know that he is close to them. The pope also said he was praying that the Lord would show “his mercy so that this tragic event would serve to construct a future of peace in the martyred land of Iraq.” Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said Pope Benedict was informed immediately of the recovery of Archbishop Rahho’s body. “We all had continued to hope and pray for his liberation,” Father Lombardi said. “Unfortunately, the most absurd and unjustified violence continues to weigh on the Iraqi people and particularly on the small Christian community, to whom the pope and all of us are particularly close in prayer and in solidarity at this moment of great pain.” Father Lombardi said the Vatican hoped “this tragic event” would lead to a greater commitment by all, particularly the international community, to work for peace in Iraq. -

A reasonable estimate seems to be perhaps 750,000 out of a total population of approximately 24 million. There are also considerable numbers of Christians of Iraqi origin living outside the country (in some cases for generations). Detroit,in the US, is a particular base. What is the attitude of the Iraqi Christian community to the war and what does the future hold for them? They have received a reasonable amount of attention in the news media in recent weeks – and the following comments are based on that as well as an extended conversation with a senior Christian Iraqi currently resident in the United Kingdom. God’s people need time to unwind mystery of liturgy CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – God’s people need time to unwind the mystery of the liturgy, both during Mass and over time, said Cardinal Godfried Danneels during a lecture at Boston College April 17. Cardinal Danneels, the archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, Belgium, was co-author of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (“Sacrosanctum Concilium”), approved by the Second Vatican Council. It called for the translation of the Mass from Latin to the vernacular. The document, promulgated Dec. 4, 1963, ordered an extensive revision of worship so that people would have a clearer sense of their own involvement in the Mass and other rites. The cardinal spoke at the annual Canisius Lecture, sponsored by the university’s Jesuit Institute. His talk was titled “The Sacred Liturgy: Revisiting ‘Sacrosanctum Consilium’ Forty Years After Vatican II.” “The liturgy needs time to deliver its riches,” he said to students, faculty and priests. The faithful need time and space to enter into the event and to leave the chaos of the world behind, and to do that they also need silence, according to the cardinal. The current length of the Mass makes the liturgy an “unstoppable succession of words” with little time for reflection, he said. If the liturgy is too focused on the intellectual, it will fail to reach many of the people who participate in it, he said. The liturgy also calls for repetition because it reveals its significance over time, Cardinal Danneels said. “Our contemporaries often conceive understanding as the ability to grasp something at first hearing,” he said. -

The Albanian “church-mosque” dispute In the city of Shkodra, the ceremonial use of the so-called kishë-xhami, the “church- mosque” in the Rozafa castle, has been a thorn in the eye between the Catholic Church and the Muslim Community. Apparently the last chapter in the dispute began around 2005 when the Catholic Church in Shkodra organised a mass in the ruins on Saint Stephen’s Day on 26 December. This provoked some representatives of the Muslim Community. At the same time, individuals described as “Wahhabis”, referring to bearded Muslim men with short trousers whom many associate with “Arab” and “foreign” versions of Islam, have been observed performing dawa in the ruins. So, we are faced with at least two different religious claims to the object, one Catholic and one Muslim. In addition, there is a third position: the Albanian state, represented by the State commission for cults, which currently lists it as one of the 201 most important national “cultural monuments/religious objects” and dubs it “Faltorja (kishë-xhami)”,1 i.e. a “sanctuary” or “prayer chapel”, as well as a “church” and/or “mosque”. With this label, the official definition is at the same time religious, non-religious, Muslim and Christian. The Muslim Community calls it the Sultan Fatihu Mosque, and the Catholic Church, St. Stephen’s Church. In order to emphasise the fact that it is disputed, and that I do not take a stand, I will in the following refer to it by its nickname, the “church-mosque”. -

Today, the Solemnity of Epiphany, this is how the prophet’s words resound. The ancient, evocative oracle of Isaiah in a way foretells the light that shone on the stable in Bethlehem on Christmas night, anticipating the angels' song: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased” (Lk 2:14). In a certain sense, in pointing to the light the prophet is pointing to Christ. As it shone for the shepherds seeking the newborn Messiah, so this light shines today on the path of the Magi, come from the East to adore him who was born King of the Jews. The Magi represent the peoples of the whole earth who, in the light of the Lord’s birth, set out on the way leading to Jesus and, in a certain sense, are the first to receive that salvation inaugurated by the Saviour’s birth and brought to fulfilment in the paschal mystery of his Death and Resurrection. When they reached Bethlehem, the Magi adored the divine Child and offered him symbolic gifts, becoming forerunners of the peoples and nations which down the centuries never cease to seek and meet Christ. 2. I greet you with great affection and extend to each of you my cordial welcome. I thank Archbishop Angelo Massafra, President of the Episcopal Conference, for expressing the sentiments you all share. I also wish to send my best wishes to Archbishop Rrok Mirdita of Durrës-Tirana, who could not be with us for health reasons. An especially affectionate greeting goes to the four new Apostolic Administrators of Rrëshen, Lezhë, Sapë and Pult-Bajze, whose appointment, after the reorganization of the ecclesiastical territories, is a promising sign for the life of all the Christian people of Albania. My thoughts turn to the contacts I have had with your Ecclesial Community. I am thinking of the Pastoral Visit on 25 April 1993 and the ordination of the first four Albanian Bishops celebrated on that same memorable occasion. I especially recall Archbishop Frano Illia and Bishop Robert Ashta, who have returned to the Father's house after living their lives in courageous fidelity to the Gospel. I am also thinking of the elevation to the purple of the late Cardinal Mikel Koliqi, a faithful witness to Christ, whose venerable figure epitomized in a way the sufferings, persecutions and indomitable hope of Christians in your beloved land. -

N. 170802a Wednesday 02.08.2017 General Audience Catechesis of the Holy Father Greetings in various languages This morning’s General Audience took place at 9.20 a.m. in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, where the Holy Father Francis met with groups of pilgrims and faithful from Italy and all over the world. In his address in Italian the Pope focused on the theme “Baptism: the door to hope” (From St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians 3: 26-28). After summarising his catechesis in several languages, the Holy Father addressed special greetings to the groups of faithful present. The General Audience concluded with the recital of the Pater Noster and the Apostolic Blessing. Catechesis of the Holy Father Dear brothers and sisters, good morning! There was a time when the churches pointed east. One entered the holy building through a door open towards the west and, walking in the nave, one headed east. It was an important symbol for ancient man, an allegory that over the course of history has progressively declined. We men of the modern age, far less accustomed to reading the great signs of the cosmos, almost never perceive as detail of this type. The west is the cardinal point of the sunset, where the light dies. The east, instead, is the place where the darkness is overcome by the first 2 light of dawn, and this recalls Christ, the Sun rising from above to the horizon of the world (cf. Lk 1: 78). The ancient rites of Baptism required catechumens to give the first part of their profession of faith facing west. -

The day of prayer, the pope said, will give individuals and communities an opportunity to implore God’s help in protecting creation and an opportunity to ask God’s forgiveness “for sins committed against the world in which we live.” Pope Francis announced his decision to add the annual prayer day to the Catholic calendar in a letter to Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and to Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The text of the letter, dated Aug. 6, was released by the Vatican on Aug. 10. The eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea is not well very well known by Italians except for tourism, hunting and gambling. There are superb Romanesque cathedrals in Kotor or Zadar for example. Today consecrated religious can claim to be well established in the Land of the Eagles. In Albania, after the fall of the communist regime, every field of activity began to recover slowly. Hope has blossomed again in religious communities, finally able to enjoy full freedom. However, what remains to be treated are the wounds of the soul, because communism wanted and knew how to uproot all trace of religiosity from the heart. The faith of Catholic families was transmitted through the recitation of the Rosary and saved. Parents with their children touched and secretly rubbed the rubble of destroyed churches and sanctuaries at night. And as happened elsewhere occurred: from the smouldering embers, the fire of religious practice revived. Although the norms of the Second Vatican Council do not seem to be fully accepted yet, deep faith has also produced a host of martyrs, in all thirty-eight; beatified on 5 November 2016 in the Cathedral of Shkodrë. All the local faithful call it the “kisha e madhë”, large mother church. The regime had turned it into a sports hall. To walk together. In some ways Albania is ahead of Italy today.
