Uefa Europa League UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2020/21 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS (First leg: 2-4) PSV Stadion - Eindhoven Thursday 25 February 2021 PSV Eindhoven 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Olympiacos FC Round of 32, Second leg Last updated 22/02/2021 14:09CET Match background 2 Legend 4 1 PSV Eindhoven - Olympiacos FC Thursday 25 February 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit PSV Stadion, Eindhoven Match background PSV Eindhoven have it all to do as they bid to reach the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for the first time in nine years, with visitors Olympiacos holding a 4-2 advantage from the first leg in Piraeus. • PSV recovered from two early defeats in the autumn to win their last three matches and top Group E, just ahead of Spanish debutants Granada, on 12 points, whereas Olympiacos lost their last five fixtures in UEFA Champions League Group C, but their one win, on the opening night at home to Marseille, proved sufficient to take third place above the French side. Previous meetings • The first ever UEFA match between these two seasoned European campaigners proved to be a lively, high-scoring affair, Olympiacos twice surrendering the lead to Eran Zahavi goals in the first half before going ahead again just before the interval and doubling their advantage seven minutes from time. Andreas Bouchalakis, Yann M'Vila, Youssef El-Arabi and Giorgos Masouras were all on the scoresheet for the Greek champions. • PSV have already won at home to Greek visitors this season, coming from two goals down to beat PAOK 3-2 on Matchday 4. The Eindhoven club therefore remain undefeated at home to teams from Greece, winning six of the seven games and drawing the other. They have also won all three of their two-legged knockout ties against Greek opposition. • Olympiacos are without a win away to Dutch clubs in UEFA competition (D2 L3). Furthermore, they have yet to score on any of those five previous visits to the Netherlands. Form guide PSV • The 1988 European champions finished fourth in the curtailed 2019/20 Dutch Eredivisie, earning a place in this season's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. Under their new German coach Roger Schmidt they won away to both Mura (5-1) and Rosenborg (2-0) to secure a record-equalling eighth group stage berth. • Last season PSV's European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League group stage, but this term they made further progress for the fifth time, shrugging off an opening 1-2 home defeat by Granada and a 1-4 loss at PAOK to win the reverse fixtures and also complete the double over Omonoia, their 4-0 win at home to the Cypriot side on Matchday 6 enabling them to displace the Spanish club from top spot. • The Eindhoven club have a 50% success rate in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, losing to Hamburg in 2009/10 (0-1 a, 3-2 h) and Zenit in 2014/15 (0-1 h, 0-3 a) but winning the two ties in between – against LOSC Lille in 2010/11 (2-2 a, 3-1 h) and Trabzonspor in 2011/12 (2-1 a, 4-1 h). This is PSV's first springtime appearance in European competition since they reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2015/16. • PSV's home record in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W3 D3 L1, the defeat coming in the most recent of those seven matches, against Zenit six years ago. They have not won a European fixture at home in the spring since beating Trabzonspor in 2011/12. • PSV have lost the first leg away from home 29 times in UEFA competition and have come back to win the tie 12 times, including three out of five when losing by a two-goal margin. The only previous occasion that they went down in the first away leg by a 4-2 scoreline was in the most recent of those 29 ties, a 1-1 second-leg draw in Eindhoven enabling Valencia to eliminate them from the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 16. Olympiacos • Champions of Greece for the 45th time in 2019/20 – their first title since 2017 – Olympiacos also lifted the Greek Cup for the 28th time to complete their 18th domestic double. Additionally they played 16 European matches, starting their campaign in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round and ending it in the UEFA Europa League round of 16, where they were eliminated by Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-1 h, 0-1 a). • This season Pedro Martins' side kicked off their UEFA Champions League adventure in the play-offs, where they overcame Omonoia of Cyprus (2-0 h, 0-0 a), but despite opening their Group C campaign with a last-gasp 1-0 win in Piraeus against Marseille, two defeats without scoring against Porto (0-2 a, 0-2 h) and Manchester City (0-3 a, 0-1 h) limited their ambition to taking third place, which they managed on the away goals rule in their head-to-head comparison with Marseille after losing 2-1 at the Stade Vélodrome on Matchday 5. • Through to the UEFA Europa League knockout phase following a mid-season transfer from the UEFA Champions League for the sixth time, Olympiacos have won three of their seven previous UEFA Europa League round of 32 ties – against Rubin Kazan in 2011/12 (1-0 a, 1-0 h), Osmanlıspor in 2016/17 (0-0 h, 3-0 a) and Arsenal last season (0-1 h, 2-1 a aet). The defeats have come against Levante in 2012/13 (0-3 a, 0-1 h), Dnipro in 2014/15 (0-2 a, 2-2 h), Anderlecht in 2015/16 (0-1 a, 1-2 h) and Dynamo Kyiv in 2018/19 (2-2 h, 0-1 a). Olympiacos have yet to progress 2 PSV Eindhoven - Olympiacos FC Thursday 25 February 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit PSV Stadion, Eindhoven beyond the round of 16. • Last season's dramatic extra-time win at Arsenal was one of just two away victories for Olympiacos in their last eight UEFA Europa League knockout phase ties, the other six having all ended in defeat and subsequent elimination. • The Piraeus side have won the home first leg 20 times previously in UEFA competition and come through all but five of those ties, most recently beating Omonoia in this season's UEFA Champions League play-off. This is the first time they have won a first leg at home 4-2. UEFA Europa League squad changes • PSV In: Erick Gutiérrez, Fredrik Oppegård, Dante Rigo Out: Djenairo Daniels, Kristófer Kristinsson, Rico Zeegers (MVV Maastricht, loan), Jorrit Hendrix (Spartak Moskva) • Olympiacos In: Kenny Lala (Strasbourg), Oleg Reabciuk (Paços Ferreira), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal) Out: Pape Abou Cissé (St-Étienne, loan), Hilal Soudani (Al-Fateh), Bruno (Aris), Pêpê (Famalicão, loan), Rúben Vinagre (end of loan) Links and trivia • Olympiacos's Portuguese forward Bruma is on a season-long loan to the club from PSV, for whom he has scored five goals in 35 appearances. • Two other Olympiacos players have featured in the Eredivisie – Ögmundur Kristinsson was an Excelsior player in the second half of 2017/18 and Marios Vrousai played on loan at Willem II from 2018 to 2020. • Bruma was a team-mate of PSV goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo at RB Leipzig between 2017 and 2019. • PSV's Mario Götze scored for Bayern München in a 3-0 away win against Olympiacos in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage. • PSV's Lars Unnerstall kept goal for Schalke in both of their wins against Olympiacos in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage (2-1 a, 1-0 h). • PSV are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League knockout phase, the others being Ajax, Benfica, Crvena zvezda, Manchester United and AC Milan. They are also one of six former UEFA Cup winners in this season's round of 32 – along with Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham Hotspur. Penalty shoot-outs • PSV's record in six UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W3 L3: 6-5 v Benfica, 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup final 6-7 v Nacional, 1988 European/South American Cup 4-5 v Feyenoord, 2001/02 UEFA Cup quarter-final 4-2 v Lyon, 2004/05 UEFA Champions League round of 16 6-5 v Tottenham, 2007/08 UEFA Europa League round of 16 7-8 v Atlético de Madrid, 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16 • Olympiacos have yet to feature in a UEFA penalty shoot-out. 3 PSV Eindhoven - Olympiacos FC Thursday 25 February 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit PSV Stadion, Eindhoven Legend Competitions Club competitions National team competitions UCL: UEFA Champions League EURO: UEFA European Football Championship ECCC: European Champion Clubs' Cup WC: FIFA World Cup UEL: UEFA Europa League CONFCUP: FIFA Confederations Cup UCUP: UEFA Cup FRIE: Friendly internationals UCWC: UEFA Cup Winners' Cup U21FRIE: Under-21 friendly internationals SCUP: UEFA Super Cup U21: UEFA European Under-21 Championship UIC: UEFA Intertoto Cup U17: UEFA Under-17 Championship ICF: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup U16: UEFA European Under-16 Championship U19: UEFA Under-19 Championship U18: UEFA European Under-18 Championship WWC: FIFA Women's World Cup WEURO: UEFA European Women's Championship Competition stages Other abbreviations F: Final GS: Group stage (aet): After extra time pens: Penalties GS1: First group stage GS2: Second group stage No.: Number og: Own goal 3QR: Third qualifying round R1: First round ag: Match decided on away P: Penalty R2: Second round R3: Third round goals agg: Aggregate R4: Fourth round PR: Preliminary round Pld: Matches played AP: Appearances SF: Semi-finals QF: Quarter-finals Pos.: Position Comp.: Competition R16: round of 16 QR: Qualifying round Pts: Points D: Drawn R32: Round of 32 1QR: First qualifying round R: Sent off (straight red card) DoB: Date of birth 1st: first leg 2QR: Second qualifying Res.: Result ET: Extra Time round sg: Match decided by silver GA: Goals against 2nd: second leg FT: Final tournament goal t: Match decided by toss of a PO: Play-off ELITE:

  • BMO Management Strategies of Football Clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie
BSc-Thesis – BMO Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie Name Student: Mylan Pouwels Registration Number: 991110669120 University: Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Study: BBC (Business) Thesis Mentor: Jos Bijman Date: 1-23-2020 Chair Group: BMO Course Code: YSS-81812 Foreword From an early age I already like football. I like it to play football by myself, to watch it on television, but also to read articles about football. The opportunity to combine my love for football with a scientific research for my Bachelor Thesis, could not be better for me. During an orientating conversation about the topic for my Bachelor Thesis with my thesis mentor Jos Bijman, I mentioned that I was always interested in the management strategies of organizations. What kind of choices an organization makes, what kind of resources an organization uses, what an organization wants to achieve and its performances. Following closely this process in large organizations is something I like to do in my leisure time. My thesis mentor Jos Bijman asked for my hobbies and he mentioned that there was a possibility to combine my interests in the management strategies of organizations with my main hobby football. In this way the topic Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie was created. The Bachelor Thesis Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie is executed in a qualitative research, using a literature study. This Thesis is written in the context of my graduation of the study Business-and Consumer Studies (specialization Business) at the Wageningen University and Research. From October 28 2019 until January 23 I have been working on the research and writing of my Thesis.
