In particular, the role respired CO2 plays in controlling the eventual Cofthe ␦13 skeleton remains unclear. In this study, the temporal variability of the C of respired CO2 produced by Montastraea faveolata has been measured at approximately monthly intervals over a 1-year period. In these experiments, three corals maintained on a platform at 8 m depth near Molasses Reef in the Florida Keys were incubated in closed chambers for 24-h periods and samples of the incubation water analyzed for the ␦13Cof ⌺ ϳ the dissolved inorganic carbon ( CO2)at 3-h intervals. -

Numerical models show coral reefs can be self -seeding ' Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences, 14 Parliament Place, Melbourne, Victoria 3002, Australia Australian Institute of Marine Science, PMB No. 3, Townsville MC, Queensland 4810, Australia ABSTRACT: Numerical models are used to simulate 3-dimensional circulation and dispersal of material, such as larvae of marine organisms, on Davies Reef in the central section of Australia's Great Barner Reef. Residence times on and around this reef are determined for well-mixed material and for material which resides at the surface, sea bed and at mid-depth. Results indcate order-of-magnitude differences in the residence times of material at different levels in the water column. They confirm prevlous 2- dimensional modelling which indicated that residence times are often comparable to the duration of the planktonic larval life of many coral reef species. Results reveal a potential for the ma~ntenanceof local populations of vaiious coral reef organisms by self-seeding, and allow reinterpretation of the connected- ness of the coral reef ecosystem. Abstract A new genus of the subfamily Pontoniinae, Ancylomenes gen. nov. is established for the ‘Periclimenes aesopius species group’ of the genus Periclimenes Costa. The new genus is distinguished from other genera of Pontoniinae on account of the strongly produced inferior orbital margin with reflected inner flange, and the basicerite of the antenna armed with an angular dorsal process. Fourteen species have been previously recognized as belonging to the ‘P. aesopius species group’. One Eastern Pacific species (P. lucasi Chace), and two Atlantic species (P. anthophilus Holthuis & Eibl- Eibesfeldt, and P. pedersoni Chace) are now also placed in Ancylomenes gen. nov. A further new species associated with a cerianthid sea anemone, A. luteomaculatus sp. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of specimens from the Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan, and Philippines. I wish to make a special dedication to Robert (Bob) E. Johannes (1936-2002) who has spent over 40 years working on coral reefs, especially linking the scientists who research and monitor reefs with the millions of people who live on and beside these resources and often depend for their lives from them. Bob had a rare gift of understanding both sides and advocated a partnership of traditional and modern management for reef conservation. We will miss you Bob! Tubastraea is an ahermatypic scleractinian nonindigenous to Brazil, which probably arrived on a ship’s hull or oil platform in the late 1980’s. The exotic coral was found along a great geographic range of the Canal Central of Ilha Grande, extending over a distance of 25 km. The abundance of Tubastraea was quantified by depth, using three different sampling methods: colony density, visual estimation and intercept points (100) for percentage of cover. Tubastraea showed ample tolerance to temperature and desiccation since it was found more abundantly in very shallow waters (0.1-0.5 m), despite the fact that hard substratum is available at greater depths at all the stations sampled. -

Vollmer Marine Science Center, Northeastern University, Nahant, Massachusetts, United States of America Abstract Over the past three decades, populations of the dominant shallow water Caribbean corals, Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata, have been devastated by white-band disease (WBD), resulting in the listing of both species as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. A key to conserving these threatened corals is understanding how their populations are genetically interconnected throughout the greater Caribbean. Genetic research has demonstrated that gene flow is regionally restricted across the Caribbean in both species. Yet, despite being an important site of coral reef research, little genetic data has been available for the Florida Acropora, especially for the staghorn coral, A. cervicornis. In this study, we present new mitochondrial DNA sequence data from 52 A. cervicornis individuals from 22 sites spread across the upper and lower Florida Keys, which suggest that Florida’s A. cervicornis populations are highly genetically interconnected (FST = 20.081). Comparison between Florida and existing mtDNA data from six regional Caribbean populations indicates that Florida possesses high levels of standing genetic diversity (h = 0.824) relative to the rest of the greater Caribbean (h = 0.70160.043). We find that the contemporary level of gene flow across the greater Caribbean, including Florida, is restricted (WCT = 0.117), but evidence from shared haplotypes suggests the Western Caribbean has historically been a source of genetic variation for Florida. -
