PBAPP seeks another cloud seeding move to fill Penang dams (File pic) The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is seeking for a second series of six additional cloud seeding operations next month to replenish two dams. -NSTP/MIKAIL ONG By Audrey Dermawan - May 28, 2020 @ 6:36pm GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is seeking for a second series of six additional cloud seeding operations next month to replenish two dams that were still below the 50 per cent capacity mark. The two dams are the Air Itam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam. Cloud seeding operations conducted between April 25 and yesterday have helped to increase the effective capacities of both dams, but these were still not enough to boost the water levels. The maximum effective capacity of the Air Itam Dam is 2.16 billion litres, while the maximum effective capacity of the Teluk Bahang Dam is 18.24 billion litres. The effective capacity of the Teluk Bahang Dam is 8.4 times more than the effective capacity of the Air Itam Dam. Penang Economic and Development Report 2017/2018 22 Penang’s Macroeconomic 22 Performance 2.1 Output performance down from 8.7% in 2016 to 6.2% in 2017, it still exceeded the national average (1%) (Figure 2.2). The Penang’s economy has been growing at an average manufacturing and services sectors have been the rate of 5.6% over the past seven years (Figure main contributors to Penang’s GDP over the past 2.1). MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017 What did we spot on the Sarawak and regional heritage scene in the last five months? SARAWAK Land clearing observed early March just uphill from the Bongkissam archaeological site, Santubong, raised alarm in the heritage-sensitive community because of the known archaeological potential of the area (for example, uphill from the shrine, partial excavations undertaken in the 1950s-60s at Bukit Maras revealed items related to the Indian Gupta tradition, tentatively dated 6 to 9th century). The land in question is earmarked for an extension of Santubong village. The bulldozing was later halted for a few days for Sarawak Museum archaeologists to undertake a rapid surface assessment, conclusion of which was that “there was no (…) artefact or any archaeological remains found on the SPK site” (Borneo Post). Greenlight was subsequently given by the Sarawak authorities to get on with the works. There were talks of relocating the shrine and, in the process, it appeared that the Bongkissam site had actually never been gazetted as a heritage site. In an e-statement, the Sarawak Heritage Society mentioned that it remained interrogative and called for due diligences rules in preventive archaeology on development sites for which there are presumptions of historical remains. Dr Charles Leh, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Museum Department mentioned an objective to make the Santubong Archaeological Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2020. A Service Provider providing electronic payment service operates the system, not just for toll payment but also for payment of parking, public transportation fares. The journey towards achieving ‘single and interoperable ETC’ is started in 1994 and by July 2004, the system were implemented nationwide. During the earlier stage of ETC Development in Malaysia, various system and technology were introduced. The toll highway operators were actively involved in ETC development in Malaysia as they realized the needs to reduce cost of toll collection, capital investment savings, fraud elimination, faster journey time, increased fuel, less congestion and reduce pollution. The first ETC Technology implemented is 2.45GHz microwave in 1994 and another highway operator introduced the same technology in 1997. The system was further enhanced in 2001 to meet the international standard of 5.8GHz. -

Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas. -
