PROGRAMS OFFERED The affiliated hospitals of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, together with the Department of Pathology, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, offer two distinct training programs. Candidates wishing to prepare for a career centered on diagnostic pathology can choose either combined AP/CP or single-track AP or CP training. This program offers intense training in general pathology and the subspecialty areas of anatomic and/or clinical pathology. The emphasis is on producing outstanding diagnosticians and clinical consultants, with a strong background in the current literature and experience in translational research. A basic science investigator track is available for MD, PhD candidates. This track allows extended time for basic science research with a faculty member, and focused clinical training in either anatomic or clinical pathology. All trainees and fellows are expected to be actively involved in interdepartmental conferences and in medical student teaching.

REQUIREMENTS Successful completion of both Step 1 and 2 (CK and CS) of the USMLE are required prior to beginning residency training. Clinical and/or research experience is helpful, but not required for combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology only, Clinical Pathology only tracks, but is essential for physician scientists (PSTP) applicants. International medical graduates must have their ECFMG certificate and proof of U.S. Citizenship or valid Visa before training.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS The Pathology program has 22 ACGME accredited positions.

FACILITIES Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), in partnership with Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized academic medical center and a major Midwest referral center with more than 1,554 physicians representing virtually every clinical specialty. Patient accommodations include 873 licensed beds between Northwestern Memorial and Prentice Women's Hospital.Northwestern Memorial encompasses nearly three million square-feet of hospital space. This includes the 17-story inpatient Feinberg Pavilion, the 22-story outpatient Galter Pavilion and the new 17-story, facility which houses the relocated Prentice Women's Hospital. With over one million square feet under roof, the Prentice Women Hospital is home to the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center which is the largest comprehensive breast center in the Midwest. The Prentice is dedicated to women's health through all stages of life, including obstetrics, gynecology, oncology and women's cardiovascular health. NMH is the main site where pathology residents receive training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The surgical pathology gross room was renovated in 2009, and includes eight state of the art grossing stations. Specimens from operating rooms on the Northwestern campus are handled in this gross room.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago n Chicago, Illinois is a pediatric specialty hospital. Located in the downtown Streeterville neighborhood, the hospital has 1,100 physicians on its medical staff and 4,000 employees. Lurie Children’s offers 70 pediatric sub-specialties and has physicians at 14 other city and suburban locations. Based on volume, it is ranked #1 regionally in all pediatric specialties and is accredited by the Joint Commission (formerly known as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations). Physicians and staff provided highly specialized care for more than 148,000 children in 2011, from every U.S. state and 35 countries.

COMMUNITY Chicago is a vibrant city with nearly 2.7 million people and a medical center of worldwide reputation. Feinberg School of Medicine is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan near the Gold Coast / Magnificent Mile and within walking distance of the Loop. There are numerous scientific and world class cultural institutions as well as major professional sports and other recreational facilities available in the city.

STIPENDS AND MAINTENANCE First-year trainees receive $59,766 per year, second-year trainees $62,124, third-year trainees $64,217, and fourth-year trainees $67,845. In addition to the stipend, trainees are provided with the following additional support including: Group health, dental, term life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance, short and long term disability, professional liability insurance and legal defense while on formal training assignments, a 401k plan, four weeks vacation with stipend and two weeks sick time with stipend.
