REHEAPA Summer Solstice 2012 By Lee A. Breakiron THE DARK MAN MEN, PART ONE The 1980s had seemed a promising time for Robert E. Howard publications and study. Book and fanzine publishing was down from its 70s’ peak, but there had been notable achievements, namely the appearances of Don Herron’s The Dark Barbarian: The Writings of Robert E. Howard ̶ A Critical Anthology (Greenwood, 1984); the journal Cromlech edited by Marc Cerasini and published by Robert M. Price, the latter also publishing a wealth of unseen REH in a slew of chapbooks from Cryptic Publications [1]; Novalyne Price Ellis’s memoir One Who Walked Alone: Robert E. Howard, the Final Years (Grant, 1986); the first book-length critical treatment, Robert E. Howard: Starmont Reader’s Guide #35 (1987) by Cerasini and Charles Hoffman; and two volumes of REH’s Selected Letters (Necronomicon, 1989 and 1991). This seemed to bode well for Howard’s receiving, at long last, the critical acceptance his work deserved, but there would still tough going ahead if it was to transcend its pulpish origins in the eyes of academia. The drive for such recognition was not helped by market manipulation designed to stifle the publication of REH in paperbacks, the flood of pastiches intended to supplant them, the disappointment of two Conan movies with no real connection to Howard’s stories, and the decline in the quality and popularity of Marvel’s Conan comics and magazines. All of these trends would only worsen in the 1990s, exemplified by the abysmal Kull the Conqueror movie in 1997. -

Breakiron A CIMMERIAN WORTHY OF THE NAME, PART FOUR Editor Leo Grin, in the July 2006 issue of his prozine The Cimmerian (Vol. 3, #7), effuses about “the most anticipated event of the entire centennial year: Howard Days. Yes, it was everything we dreamed it would be. Over three hundred attendees. Three days of non-stop Howard action. Thousands of dollars in auction items and swap-met swag. Stories and guests and Vietnam flashbacks, oh my. It’s all here within these pages.” (p. 3) He’d covered the two previous annual Robert E. Howard Days celebrations himself, but for this event he decided to pass off the duty to another fan in order to get a fresh perspective. His choice was newspaperman Rick Kelsey of Dallas, who brought his reporting experience to bear with good effect in his “Celebration of the Century,” his 23-page, photo-studded article covering the epochal happening. 1 REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2014 And quite an event it was. Expanded to 3 days from 2 meant more panels, get-togethers, and things to do and talk about. It meant larger crowds and new faces, and its economic boon couldn’t have come at a better time for REH’s hometown of Cross Plains, Texas, whose residents were still recovering from the effects of the wildfire of December, 2005, though they had cleaned up so well that one had to look twice to see evidence of the devastation. Project Pride’s Era Lee Hanke testified to the larger-than-normal crowds. -

Breakiron THE SASSER ZINES, PART TWO The eighth issue of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (REH: TGR) appeared in the fall of 2005, 3 years and four issues into the 21st century revival of editor and publisher Damon C. Sasser’s long-running Robert E. Howard semi-pro fanzine, and the third issue of five on a semiannual schedule. Coming in at 40 pages plus tan-tinted covers, it presents art by Gene Day (front cover), Esteban Maroto (back cover), Bill Cavalier (inside covers), Greg Ruth, Stephen Fabian (with a six-page portfolio on REH’s heroes and heroines), and David Burton, in a run of 250 copies with a cover price of $10.50. The Howard feature is the African adventure “Black Country.” Advancing the frontiers of REH scholarship, as always, is Glenn Lord with his article “Herbert Klatt: The Fourth Musketeer” on one of the more obscure of Howard’s correspondents. The name of Herbert C. Klatt did not surface until Lord identified him as the fourth attendee, besides REH and his other literary- minded friends and correspondents, Tevis Clyde Smith, Bob, and Truett Vinson, of a wild party at Smith’s uncle’s ranch on 26 December, 1925, the one time Howard and Klatt met. Klatt was the inspiration of the character “Hubert Grotz” in REH’s semi-autobiographical novel Post Oaks and Sand Roughs (Grant, 1990). Much of the information in the article comes from a slender file of letters from Klatt to Smith that Smith’s nephew, Roy Barkley, made available to Lord after Smith’s death in 1984. -

Breakiron A CIMMERIAN WORTHY OF THE NAME, PART FIVE With the fourth volume (2007) of his prozine The Cimmerian, editor Leo Grin returned to a bimonthly publishing schedule. The distinctive color for this volume’s embellishments and limited edition covers is blue and the new illustrator is Andrew Cryer. Launching the volume is REHupan Damon Sasser with his article “Underwood for the Ages,” his account of the recovery of what is supposedly the very Underwood typewriter that Robert E. Howard used to type most of his stories. Though nearly four million of this Model 5 typewriter were manufactured between 1915 and 1931, one particular exemplar surfaced when Californian fan and collector Jay Corrinet advertised in Bay Area newspapers for persons who might have items related to REH that they might sell to him. In response, an 85-year-old man named Edward R. Farrell in San Jose wrote Corrinet, claiming to have Howard’s actual typewriter, having bought it from REH’s father, Dr. Isaac M. Howard, in 1937 when Farrell handled Underwood sales and service in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California for 40 years. Farrell said that, according to his records, the machine was built in 1928 and that there was a second typewriter in damaged condition that was not worth repairing, presumably the one REH cannibalized for parts, the latter mentioned in our previous installment. [1] Sasser reports that the second machine was lost when it was stolen from the lady who inherited most of Dr. Howard’s furniture, which included REH’s writing desk.
