I am delighted that National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra (Haryana) is organising its 17th Convocation on 20th February, 2020. According to Swami Vivekananda, "Education is not the amount of information" but "life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas. If you have assimilated five ideas and made them your life and character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart a whole library". It is therefore quite imperative that education lays greater focus on life-building, man- making and character-building of our students, the makers and the shapers of new India, mindful of the great heritage of India - the cradle and continuum of civilisation. The Convocation is a moment of singular significance, a turning point in the life of a student. It is also a proud moment for the parents who render every conceivable support and assistance to their wards. I am optimistic that the recipients of the degrees will have a luminous career and bring laurels to the University and the nation. I congratulate the Director, the faculty members and all the graduating students and wish them success in their future endeavours.

At the outset, I congratulate you the young graduates and share my best wishes. This convocation is marked by a special distinction that has made it all the more special. The distinction comes from the inspiring presence of Shri Rajnath Singh Ji, Hon'ble Raksha Mantri, Govt. of India. Sir, the Institute takes pride in hosting you as the Hon'ble Chief Guest of 17th Convocation. It has been little more than three years that I take pride in heading this reputed Institute as the Director. And, as such in that capacity, I am privileged to be presenting a report on the activities in the Institute and important achievements in the last one year so and to be outlining the course of action for the future. The Institute has a glorious past of over five decades, richly contributed by individuals and groups of individuals. The Institute was established in the year 1963 as a Regional Engineering College, started running at the present campus in 1965 and rechristened as National Institute of Technology in 2002 and subsequently conferred with the status of an Institution of National Importance in 2007. The Institute achieved an important milestone in its history when we celebrated Golden Jubilee in the year 2013. The Institute over its journey to date has grown manifold in academic programs, infrastructure and outreach. Today the Institute is proudly conducting 07 B.Tech. programs, 20 M.Tech. In addition, 24 MBA and 73 MCA candidates have qualified for the award of their respective degrees. The meritorious students under various categories are felicitated by awarding Medals, merit certificates and cash prizes. In a short span of three years, together we have been able to achieve some important milestones and have taken important initiatives to take this Institute to greater heights. I am happy to share with you some of the initiatives / achievements of the last one year or so that have improved the overall academic ambience of the Institute. v NIRF-2019 It is matter of pride to share that the Institute has been consistently performing well in NIRF ranking and

13 DIRECTOR'S REPORT 2020

maintaining the upward trend. As compared to 60th position in 2017 ranking, the Institute stands at 41st position in the NIRF ranking–2019 which is a quantum jump. Among NITs, the NIRF ranking of the Institute has improved from 12th position in 2017 to 7th position in 2019. This is owing to the concerted efforts of all stakeholders – faculty, staff, students, and alumni. v Accreditation of UG and PG programs The accreditation of the academic programs in any institution is very important and plays a very vital role in getting the programs international credibility and acknowledgement. Realizing this fact, the accreditation of the UG and PG programs of the Institute was given top priority and the process was initiated for the same in the year 2017. As a result, 05 UG programs were accredited in 2017 for three years with one UG program accredited for six years. For extension of accreditation up to three more years, the visit of NBA team has taken place in the month of January, 2020 and we are expecting the positive outcome any time by March 2020. Further, the process of accreditation of the 15 PG programs has been initiated with the Self- Assessment Reports (SARs) having been uploaded and the requisite fee deposited. The visit of the NBA team is likely to take place in the month of March / April, 2020 for the 15 PG programs. The efforts put in by the faculty, staff and students towards this are duly appreciated. v Recruitment and promotion of Faculty and Non-Teaching Staff The selection process for the recruitment of faculty at all levels in various departments has been completed. Also, the selection process for the recruitment of Non-teaching staff has been completed and 48 new staff members have already joined the services of the Institute. The process for the promotion of Non-teaching staff has been completed and 04 officers and 23 technical and ministerial staff members have been promoted in January, 2020. v Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) –III The Project, 3rd phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (referred to as TEQIP-III) is fully integrated with the Twelfth Five-year Plan objectives for Technical Education as a key component for improving the quality of Engineering Education in existing institutions to improve their policy, academic and management practices. TEQIP-III is a world bank supported project under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The Institute is partner in TEQIP-III as Mentor Institute under subcomponent 1.3, which aims at Twinning Arrangements to Build Capacity and Improve Performance of Participating Institute which in our case is Government Engineering College, Bikaner, Rajasthan, as the Mentee Institute. Under the project, an estimated total budget outlay for the Institute of approx. Rs. 7 Crore, spread over the project duration i.e. 2017-2020, has been allocated by National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU). The Institute is effectively utilizing the funds received under TEQIP-III in conducting various activities suggested under the scope of the project which are broadly under the following three categories: A. Procurement of Goods B. Academic Processes C. Operating Costs The total expenditure since the inception of the project on various activities, including with Government Engineering College, Bikaner, Rajasthan, is Rs. 602.97 Lakhs out of which under procurement is Rs. 345.21 Lakhs, under Academic process Rs. 225.06 Lakhs and under Operating Costs is Rs. 32.68 Lakhs. The procurement and installation of four outdoor all-weather electronic display systems in the campus (arguably first and the only amongst NITs) and the 13 smart digital boards in the lecture rooms needs special mention as the creation of live and smart interactive facilities under TEQIP-III. v Academics accomplishments (i) Academic audit of all twenty M.Tech. programs being offered in various departments/schools was got done by inviting eminent experts from premier institutions of the country like IITs/ IISc. Based on the suggestions and critical input received from the experts, necessary steps are being taken towards improving the overall academics and in particular the M.Tech. programs. It was a very comprehensive

21 DIRECTOR'S REPORT 2020

Besides the above major activities, various routine academic activities are being conducted to improve Teaching, Learning and Research competence of the faculty, improve student learning, and student employability. In nutshell, constant efforts are made towards bringing in betterment in the overall academic ambience in the Institute and thus taking the Institute to higher level of excellence. Roadmap Ahead v I wish to take the Institute towards scaling the NIRF rank even better to anywhere in the top three among the NITs which is possible only when we improve in teaching learning, academics and research & consultancy, infrastructure development, outreach programs etc. For this to happen, I envisage to work wholeheartedly with the faculty, staff and students of the Institute. v Keeping in view increased strength of students, the Institute has taken action and plans to construct nine new lecture halls as additional floors on the existing buildings. v A new G+5 building is proposed to be constructed. v One additional floor is also proposed to be constructed on top of the old MBA block. v Work order has already been placed for the construction of one additional floor on the MCA block which will have been lecture halls / labs / staff rooms. v Master layout plan of the Institute is being prepared and should be ready soon wherein there is provision of G+5 Students Activity Centre, Community Centre, New hostels, and Residential quarters. The new residential quarters are proposed to come up at the site made available after the demolition of old quarters. In my opinion, technology is a fast and simple method to serve the people. Our Institute should provide a technology based solution to the various challenges facing our society and nation. We should give at least two products to the society through commercialization of the patents. We should establish more centers like Siemens center of excellence to improve the engineering skill of students to make them industry ready. One more center to cater to the needs of the students of Electronics and Computer/IT departments I think is required. Modernization of labs is a continuous process to improve the collaborative research activities and consultancy and therefore, should be the priority of all of us. With this, I once again congratulate you, my young friends. You are the creator of new India. We have achieved a lot and let us all aspire and work sincerely to achieve even bigger so as to reach the higher level and make our country a developed nation. I once again gratefully acknowledge the gracious presence of the Hon'ble Chief Guest, Guests of honor and welcome them on the campus. Thank you. Jai Hind !

A JOURNEY TO BEHOLD

I peek into my first day at college back in July 2015, and I see a girl who was determined to explore and make time in her schedule for everything she was passionate about. Making the best of each passing moment was the key, which was inculcated within me by my grandfather since childhood. Right from the start, my core qualities of "commitment", "enthusiasm", and "respect for time" helped me through. My mother, being a Sanskrit teacher, always mentions these words which motivates me all the time:

मनोरथानामगितन िवते । (Nothing is beyond the reach of the desires)

Inside and outside the classroom, the institution offered me ample opportunities and I tried not to miss any. Lectures, assignments, vivas, sessionals, projects, and placement preparations fulfilled my academic zeal. My 'professors' helped me in strengthening my knowledge base and excelling in academics. My 'Friends' always cheered me on. Hostels were the best learning grounds to experience various cultures, late night gossip, group studies, sharing things and talks with mess-staff & guard uncles. Since childhood, my father has indulged me in sports. Gratefully, I could see an opportunity to pursue sports at college with the best 'coaches'. So, today if you ask me what makes me more agile and decisive, I'd say sports. I was also a part of NBC, HLAD and Mime Team, where I got to explore my interests and hone my skills. Most importantly, I learned the art of time management. My college life mostly revolved around rigorous sports practice, athletics, coding, and academics. I enjoyed every part of it, and it was absolutely worth all the effort. It took me consistent quality efforts to get through the highs and lows. Luckily, failures were few, but whenever they came, they were seen as learning opportunities. I can't express enough gratitude for my teachers, coaches, friends, peers, seniors, juniors, mentors, both on ground and off ground , who helped me gear and ascend through it all. With every passing event, I could say that I kept my promise of not compromising on any of my passions. I firmly believe that NIT Kurukshetra has added extremely valuable lessons to my life. Today, I can confidently say that the enriched experience and a whole lot of learnings that I have gained in these 4 years at NIT Kurukshetra, has helped me to evolve into a better individual. With enormous respect and heartfelt gratitude for the college, I close this note here.

ROLLBACKS IN MY MEMORY PHOTOGRAPHS

As I sit down aside my laptop to write down a few words about my 4 years in college strolling back in my memories, with my extremely supportive yet lunatic friends, the exceptionally talented juniors and seniors, and everybody else I met during that this journey sewing those moments that made me who I am today. Every insane instance, right from entering those ancient buildings called Boys Hostels, living in extreme heat with that not so useful fan, to hours of dusting those mess roti just to make them edible to swallow with yellow water or what our mess cook would call it 'Dal'. Amid our sufferings, all thanks to the tasty mess food, we stumbled upon our saviors— our Avengers, the superheroes without a cape. These heroes stayed with us at every moment of our 4 years of college life. They go by many names, helping each student who knocks at their doors or should I rather say, call them up “Kalu Bhaiya, 2 parathe,1 chokha back gate par”. Kalu, Bintu, Aman, Food Cave, Nepali - our superheroes. Every student in the college might not have called their parents in days but a call to these avengers would be frequent in their call logs. I would need more than just words to brief my story at NIT Kurukshetra, every reminiscence filled with emotions. Organizing events with SPICMACAY, clicking photographs all around the campus with NTT, all night jamming in SAC with my Music Family and organizing the first TEDxNITKurukshetra with Team TEDx; all were a crucial part of how I matured from a 12th pass kid to the person I am today. In all that mist, the best part, yet, was ' 6 V's required', our group of 6 friends hanging out on every turn of the college, playing FIFA all day all night, coordinating our bunks to hangout, once in a while tasting of 'Somras' and crashing different weddings around Kurukshtra when we were broke. College gives you a lot of opportunities to try, to fail and then to try again in order to rise. I believe if you have the humility to accept the facts and the hunger to learn, you will find great teachers all around you. Throughout 4 years I was blessed to have some amazing seniors, juniors, and batchmates who taught me a lot on every turn of my journey. I am truly thankful to them and will always be all my life for bearing with me during that time. One thing that I live by that I want to share with my juniors or anyone who come across this memory strolling of mine is, “Always dream big”, for that is one thing no one can stop you from.
