MICHAEL HANCHER Seeing and Tagging Things in Pictures What men or gods are these? What maidens loth? What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape? What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy? —John Keats, ‘‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’’ Tagging Magritte A RT UK, FORMERLY KNOWN AS Your Paintings, is an ambitious project to document and make accessible online all the paintings that are held by public museums in Great Britain. Launched at the National Gallery in June 2011, it was initially supported by the British Broadcasting Corpo- ration and the Public Catalogue Foundation (now also renamed Art UK), a registered charity established in 2003.1 By August 2015, more than two hundred thousand paintings had been photographed for the project’s data- base.2 Basic metadata for each painting was supplied by museum profes- sionals, but more detailed metadata was crowdsourced by online volunteers, who ‘‘tagged’’ individual images with descriptive terms that could be entered in a search engine to call up relevant paintings. An interim history of the project noted that economy was a major incentive for the crowdsourcing: ‘‘It was obvious that it would be prohibitively expensive to pay expert fine art cataloguers to describe all 200,000 paintings systematically and that some sort of voluntary system would have to be devised.’’ Crowdsourcing prom- ised the contributing museums other benefits as well, including ‘‘the poten- tial to engage both existing and new audiences,’’ and the discovery of vernacular (rather than expert) search terms responsive to the interests of ‘‘the widest set of potential users.’’3 abstract Despite modernist precepts, digital projects that use crowdsourcing to annotate large collections of images of paintings and book illustrations with ‘‘tags’’ have encouraged viewers to see things in pictures and to say what they see.

Eliot 1 Eliot’s ironically depressing assessment of the interwar period (during which he produced The Waste Land, recognised as one of the most outstanding pieces of Modernist literature) does not match the reality of what emerged as a very significant period in British cultural history and practice. The twenty one years between 1918 and 1939 was an era of intense change and progress for British society, culture and politics. The Great War had a profound effect on the nation and initiated a cultural shift from the turmoil of the Victorian age, through the relative complacency of the Edwardian period to Britain emerging as a modern world nation.2 Wars have a tendency to speed up technical advancement and social change, so Britain entered the war on horseback and emerged with huge technical advances in land and air transport.

ROBERT CRONE, c.1718 – 1779 ‘A view of the Roman Campagna from the Temple of Vesta at Delphi with a view of Rome in the far distance’ Oil on canvas 95.6 x 132.7 Signed, inscribed ‘Roma’, and dated 1765 Travelling in Italy in 1764, John Martin noted an expatriate group of Irish artists: ‘Mr Crone, Mr Delane and Mr Forrester the only persons from our part of the world who practice landscape painting are all Irish’. Indeed this group of artists defined a remarkable branch of the eighteenth-century landscape school, mixing native influence with their exposure to both the Roman Campagna and the incipient neo-classical movement. The work of all three artists is extremely rare, but has been the subject of much recent scholarly enquiry. Crone was born in, or about 1718, thus making him at least ten years older than artists of Barret’s generation. After studying in Dublin with Robert Hunter and his kinsman Phillip Hussey, Crone went to Italy where he was to spend some twelve years.

And I have only...I think I remembered a few odd things when I was very young; I remembered being taken along on a Sunday in a pram along the Regent's Canal, which I thought was beautiful, and I believe it was then that I saw my first aeroplane, and you know, they were rather like those aeroplanes, you know, they made a terrible lot of noise, frightening to anybody really, and frightening to a child, and I was terrified, I was so terrified that it remained in my mind. Right. I mean do you remember if you screamed and somebody comforted you, or you just remember the terror? I can only remember the horror of the aeroplane, really. I'm sure they were very nice to me and said, `Oh, my dear...' you know, that sort of thing, but I...no, I was quite..
