Anne Feeney) You Got to Laugh When the Spirit Says Laugh! Was It Cesar Chavez? Or Rosa Parks That Day? You Got to Laugh HAVE YOU BEEN TO JAIL FOR JUSTICE? (Anne Feeney) You got to laugh when the spirit says laugh! Was it Cesar Chavez? Or Rosa Parks that day? You got to laugh . etc. Some say Dr. King or Gandhi that set them on their way Chorus No matter who your mentors are it's pretty plain to see That, if you've been to jail for justice, you're in good You got to dance . etc. company Chorus Chorus You got to sing . etc. Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand Chorus Cause sitting in and lyin' down are ways to take a stand Have you sung a song for freedom? or marched that picket You got to shout . etc. line? Chorus Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine You got to bid . etc. Chorus Chorus You law abiding citizens, come listen to this song You got to do when the spirit says do! Laws were made by people, and people can be wrong You got to do when the spirit says do! Once unions were against the law, but slavery was fine When the spirit says do, you’ve got to do, oh Lord! Women were denied the vote & children worked the mine The more you study history the less you can deny it You got to do when the spirit says do A rotten law stays on the books til folks like us defy it Chorus You got to do when the spirit says do Chorus WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED (originally by The Seekers The law's supposed to serve us, and so are the police – adapted by many) And when the system fails, it's up to us to speak our peace It takes eternal vigilance for justice to prevail So get courage from your convictions We shall not, we shall not be moved. x 2 Let them haul you off to jail! Chorus WHEN THE SPIRIT SAYS DO (African American) Just like a tree that's planted by the waterside, You got to do when the spirit says do! We shall not be moved. You got to do when the spirit says do! When the spirit says do, you’ve got to do, oh Lord! On the road to freedom, You got to do when the spirit says do We shall not be moved. x 2 Chorus Chorus: Spirit says do! (softly) We're brothers together, Spirit says do! (a little louder) We shall not be moved. Spirit says do! (a little louder) We're [sisters] together, Spirit says do! (a little louder) We shall not be moved. Spirit says do! (a little louder) Chorus Spirit says dooooo! (loudest) We're fighting for our freedom 1 We shall not be moved. x 2 We will reach as we have reached before Chorus For there is no stranger in this our home Chorus We're fighting for our children We shall not be moved. x 2 Chorus In the name of love – in the name of peace Will you stand, will you stand with me We're fighting for their future We shall not be moved. x 2 WE SHALL OVERCOME Chorus We shall overcome We shall overcome Young and old together We shall overcome some day. We shall not be moved. x 2 Chorus Chorus: Oh, deep in my heart I do believe Don't let the world deceive you We shall overcome today. We shall not be moved. x 2 Chorus We’ll walk hand in hand We’re fighting for our future We shall not be moved. x 2 We’ll walk hand in hand Chorus We’ll walk hand in hand some day. Chorus STAND! (Amy Carol Webb) We shall all be free Chorus: We shall all be free I will stand with you – Will you stand with me We shall all be free some day. We will be the change that we hope to see Chorus In the name of love – in the name of peace Chorus Will you stand, will you stand with me We shall live in peace When injustice raises up its fist We shall live in peace We shall live in peace some day. And fights to stop us in our tracks We will rise and as one resist Chorus No fear nor sorrow can turn us back We are not afraid Chorus We are not afraid We are not afraid today When pain and hatred churn up angry noise Chorus And try to shout down our freedom song We are not alone We will rise in one joyful voice We are not alone Loud and clear and ever strong We are not alone today. Chorus Chorus When broken hearts come knocking on our door The whole wide world around Lost and hungry and so alone The whole wide world around The whole wide world around some day. Chorus 2 We shall heal the Earth As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking We shall heal the Earth Is this land made for you and me? We shall heal the Earth some day. Chorus Chorus Nobody living can ever stop me, We shall overcome As I go walking that freedom highway; We shall overcome Nobody living can ever make me turn back; We shall overcome some day. This land was made for you and me. Chorus Chorus THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND (Woody Guthrie) We see Gulf oil spilled, we see the trees killed, Chorus: We see the flares on, the oil and gas fields, Back hoes are gutting, our coal‐filled mountains, This land is your land ‐ This land is my land There’ll be no land left for you and me. From California to the New York island; Chorus From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and Me. BIG YELLOW TAXI (Joni Mitchell) They paved paradise As I was walking that ribbon of highway, And put up a parking lot I saw above me that endless skyway: With a pink hotel, a boutique And a swinging hot spot I saw below me that golden valley: This land was made for you and me. Chorus: Chorus Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got till it’s gone I've roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps They paved paradise To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts; And put up a parking lot And all around me a voice was sounding: They took all the trees This land was made for you and me. Put 'em in a tree museum Chorus And they charged the people A dollar and a half just to see 'em When the sun came shining and I was strolling, Chorus And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling, As the fog was lifting, a voice was chanting: Hey farmer, farmer Put away the D.D.T. now This land was made for you and me. Give me spots on my apples Chorus But leave me the birds and the bees Please! Chorus As I went walking, I saw a sign there And on the sign it said, "No Trespassing." Late last night But on the other side, it didn't say nothing, I heard that screen door slam That side was made for you and me. And a big yellow taxi Chorus Came and took away my old man Chorus In the shadow of the steeple, I saw my people, By the relief office, I seen my people; Late last night I heard that screen door slam 3 And a big yellow tractor We are a justice seeking people, Took away my house, And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 Took away my land We are young and old together, I said don't it always seem to go And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 That you don't know what you've got till it’s gone We are a land of many colors, They paved paradise And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 And put up a parking lot (x3) BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND (Bob Dylan) We are gay and straight together, How many roads must a man walk down And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 Before you call him a man? How many seas must a white dove sail We are standing here together Before she sleeps in the sand? And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 Yes, an’ how many times must the cannon balls fly Before they’re forever banned? We won’t be intimidated And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 Chorus: The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind We are creating a livable future The answer is blowin’ in the wind. And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 How many years can a mountain exist We are a gentle loving people, Before it is washed to the sea? And we are singing, singing for our lives. x2 Yes, an’ how many years can some people exist Before they’re allowed to be free? IF I HAD A HAMMER (Lee Hays & Pete Seeger) Yes, an’ how many times can a man turn his head If I had a hammer And pretend that he just doesn’t see? I'd hammer in the morning Chorus I'd hammer in the evening All over this land How many times must a man look up I'd hammer out danger Before he can see the sky? I'd hammer out a warning Yes, an’ how many ears must one man have I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters Before he can hear people cry? All over this land Yes, an’ how many deaths will it take ‘til he knows That too many people have died? If I had a bell Chorus I'd ring it in the morning I'd ring it in the evening How many trials must a man endure, All over this land Before he’s allowed to speak truth? I'd ring out danger How many years must a man sacrifice, I'd ring out a warning To stand up for those in their youth? I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters Yes, and how many people will stand on the side, All over this land ‘cause they are unsure, what to do? If I had a song Chorus I'd sing it in the morning I'd sing it in the evening SINGING FOR OUR LIVES (Holly Near) All over this land We are a gentle, angry people, I'd sing out danger And we are singing, singing for our lives.

NANNY Written by Nikyatu Jusu “For the mouths of her children quickly forgot the taste of her nipples, and years ago they had begun to look past her face into the nearest stretch of sky.” --Toni Morrison, Sula Cherry Rev. (7/18/20) 2. 1 INT. UPPER EAST SIDE APARTMENT - DAY 1 THE SOUND OF WATER RUNNING, unfettered, unencumbered--perhaps overflowing... We creep through a longish hallway littered with doorways and framed pictures. In these pictures are various poses of a PERFECT UPPER EAST SIDE FAMILY comprised of a WHITE COUPLE [30’s] and their angelic BABY BOY [4]. At the foot of one doorway, shards of light refract like luminescent knives off a pool of blood. We float past... A faintly discernible larger than life arachnid shadow ambles along hallway walls. Whispers. Barely discernible--then louder emanate from-- An AFRO-DOMINICAN WOMAN [45], at the end of the hallway. Her back is to us. She’s frantic. Desperate. She presses a phone to her ear--in her other hand: a top of the line, bloody, French Laguiole steak knife. She stumbles through tears. AFRO DOMINICAN WOMAN (spanish) I...don’t know. I don’t know what happened. I was tired. Confused. It wasn’t the boy. It was something else-- An INHUMAN GROAN echoes just behind her. She freezes, turning slowly and we see her face for the first time: palpable fear. Defense scratches etch her face. A SMALL SPIDER emerges from her ear, making its way across her cheek. She drops the bloody phone as she faces an ANIMALISTIC WAIL.

Since then, we have been able to focus our efforts on the scourge of bullying, ridicule and violence among youth. The Don’t Laugh at Me program brought children together in schools, camps, and clubs to sing and engage in exercises that built a sense of community and mutual respect. We have seen bullying, ridicule and violence recede and kindness advance where the program has been implemented. We still do, and the Don’t Laugh at Me program is just as vital and effective as ever. It remains the heart and soul of Operation Respect. However, the troubling new world of growing racial and cultural tension requires that we do more. We can’t ignore the rhetoric of division and hostility that has permeated discourse We are taking on the here in the U.S., in much of Europe and other parts of the world.
