In any case this episode is riddled with far too much redundant expositionary dialog that seems to exist only for those who did not see the pilot. I fear that this could end up being the formula this series will adhere to. Of note in this episode is the wonderful score and as in the last episode Anna Torv's performance. 7 ARTIGO http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/abusoes.2017.27816 01 LOVECRAFT’S TERRESTRIAL TERRORS: MORALLY ALIEN EARTHLINGS Greg Conley (EKU) Recebido em 05 mar 2017. Greg Conley is Adjunct Instructor of Humanities, Aprovado em 30 mar 2017 Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies, MFA in Creative Writing, of the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Humanities. Expert Areas: Victorian Literature; Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror. Email: gregory. [email protected]. Abstract: Lovecraft’s cosmic horror led him to create aliens that did not exist on the same moral spectrum as humanity. That is one of many ways Lovecraft’s work insists humans do not matter in the cosmos. However, most of the work on Lovecraft has focused on the space aliens, and how they are necessarily alien to humans, because they are from other worlds. Lovecraft’s terrestrial aliens, such as the Deep Ones, the Old Ones, and the Shoggoths, are less alien, but just as morally strange. Lovecraft used biological horror to create his terrestrial aliens, and in turn used them to claim that morality was a product of human evolution and history. A life form with a separate evolutionarily history would necessarily have a separate and incomprehensible morality. Lovecraft illustrates that point with narrators who are ultimately sympathetic with the aliens, despite the threat they pose to the narrators and to everything they have ever known. Keywords: Fiction; Cosmic horror; Biologic horror. • The Same Old Story Chief Science Officers
Fall 2 019 THE SAME OLD STORY A Short Story from the Sci-Fi World 8 CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICERS LOG SUBMITTED BY LT. BRAD JACOBS 23 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome, Greetings, Salutations and yI'el! Welcome to the Fall 2019 issue of the Ticonderoga newsletter. As difficult as it may seem to be, we are already moving into the final days of 2019. Like so many years that have come and gone, each has its own good and not so good events. This year, even with it's rough patches, has had an overtone that fits well with this issue. Super, and Super Heroes! We all have to admit sometimes, we would love to be able to be able to move that mountain of laundry with our minds, or see whats in the mystery collectibles boxes with X-Ray vision, or maybe just fly and buzz by our old high school bullies house and ding-dong-ditch em! Well, whatever your first activity might have been once you found out that super powers were yours, that moment may not ever happen. What will happen though, is super hero sized actions that have super sized results every day all across the country by “ordinary” crew who don't let their limits stop them. So that being said, even though we are going to have to move the laundry, buy the box without looking, and run like a mad man after ringing the bell, we still look to the skies, watch for that flash of lightning, and aspire to master our minds powers as we create our perfect hero in our books, films and comics.

Peter the Great and His Changing Identity Senior History Honors Thesis May 11, 2016 Emiley Pagrabs Pagrabs 1 Introduction Well aware of the perception that foreigners held of him, Peter the Great would never apologize for his nationality or his country. A product of his upbringing, Peter did have some qualities that many foreigners criticized as barbaric and harsh. Said Peter: They say that I am cruel; that is what foreigners think of me, but who are they to judge? They do not know what the situation was at the beginning of my reign, and how many were opposed to my plans, and brought about the failure of projects which would have been of great benefit to my country obliging me to arm myself with great severity; but I have never been cruel…I have always asked for the cooperation of those of my subjects in whom I have perceived intelligence and patriotism, and who, agreeing with my views, were ready to support them.1 Essentially, Peter I was simply a Russian.

!1 of !3 Wednesday, May 22, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE AVANTE GARAGE THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES IT’S LOS ANGELES INAUGURAL PRODUCTION The Award-Winning Avante Garage Theatre Company, formerly of Nashville, and then NYC, will present it’s first production in Los Angeles this Summer at The Avery Schreiber Playhouse in the NOHO Arts District. First up for this talented bunch of professionals is the world premiere of a new play - “THE FAVORITE”, by Los Angeles Playwright Joe Correll. They all have unresolved conflicts that get unpacked along with the mountains of boxes, bags and crates. As the family goes through the endless pile of their parents' accumulated treasures and junk, they relive childhood milestones and touchstones, both joyous and traumatic. Things take an unexpected turn when they uncover a painting that was painted by their mother. "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling ACT I [Fade in on a shot of the sky...the various nebulae, and planet bodies stand out in sharp, sparkling relief. As the camera begins a slow pan across the heavens.] Narrator's Voice There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space, and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow - between science and superstition. And it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone. [The CAMERA has begun to PAN DOWN until it passes the horizon and on a sign which reads, "Maple Street." PAN DOWN until we are shooting down at an angle toward the street below. It's a tree-lined, quiet residential American street, very typical of the small town. The houses have front porches on which people sit and swing on gliders, conversing across from house to house. Steve Brand polishes his car parked in front of his house. His neighbor, Don Martin, leans against the fender watching him. A Good Humor man rides a bicycle and is just in the process of stopping to sell some ice cream to a couple of kids. Two women gossip on the front lawn. Another man waters his lawn.] Narrator's Voice Maple Street, U.S.A., late summer. A tree-lined little world of front porch gliders, hop scotch, the laughter of children, and the bell of an ice cream vendor.

  • Dressing in American Telefantasy
Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Stripping the Body in Contemporary Popular Media: the value of (un)dressing in American Telefantasy MANJREE KHAJANCHI, Independent Researcher ABSTRACT Research perspectives on identity and the relationship between dress and body have been frequently studied in recent years (Eicher and Roach-Higgins, 1992; Roach-Higgins and Eicher, 1992; Entwistle, 2003; Svendsen, 2006). This paper will make use of specific and detailed examples from the television programmes Once Upon a Time (2011- ), Falling Skies (2011- ), Fringe (2008- ) and Game of Thrones (2011- ) to discover the importance of dressing and accessorizing characters to create humanistic identities in Science Fiction and Fantastical universes. These shows are prime case studies of how the literal dressing and undressing of the body, as well as the aesthetic creation of television worlds (using dress as metaphor), influence perceptions of personhood within popular media programming. These four shows will be used to examine three themes in this paper: (1) dress and identity, (2) body and world transformations, and (3) (non-)humanness. The methodological framework of this article draws upon existing academic literature on dress and society, combined with textual analysis of the aforementioned Telefantasy shows, focussing primarily on the three themes previously mentioned. This article reveals the role transformations of the body and/or the world play in American Telefantasy, and also investigates how human and near-human characters and settings are fashioned. This will invariably raise questions about what it means to be human, what constitutes belonging to society, and the connection that dress has to both of these concepts. KEYWORDS Aesthetics, Body, Dress, Falling Skies, Fringe, Game of Thrones, Identity, Once Upon a Time, Telefantasy.
