SERVING CLOVIS, PORTALES AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES EasternNewMexicoNews.com FIELD READINESS 11-year-old struck by car, hospitalized ❏ Boy in ‘stable condition’ hours after incident, according to school superintendent. By David Grieder STAFF WRITER [email protected] CLOVIS — A child was hospitalized Monday morning after being struck by a car while crossing a busy intersection on his way to school, an apparent accident of timing and visibility. The 11-year old boy “was alert and con- scious,” but “complained of pain to his back and head” and was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center, according to an email from Clovis Police Capt. Roman Romero. Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Jody Balch said the boy was in “stable condi- tion” hours after the incident. Neither Balch nor Romero had updates Monday afternoon. The driver was not cited, Romero said, as the vehicle had right-of-way at the time of the incident just before 7:55 a.m. at the intersec- tion of 21st and Sycamore Streets. Yucca Middle School Principal Loran Hill said the child, a sixth grader, lives somewhere east of Norris Street and sometimes rides the bus into school. He wasn’t sure why the boy came on foot Monday, and said classes don’t start till 8:20 a.m. so “he would’ve had plenty of time” to get to class. Jennifer Bigler said she was three cars back, on Sycamore Street, at the time of the colli- sion. She said the boy was at the northeast cor- ner of the intersection when the car nearest him in the westbound lane of 21st stopped at the intersection. The boy started running

The debris clogged the pipeline that Alamogordo uti- lized as a water source. ❏ Woods’ late run Sunday stirs memories of past.

By Mark Long THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Standing in the mid- dle of the 14th fairway with a sand wedge in his hands, Tiger Woods had a chance. At making a birdie. At cut- ting into Webb Simpson’s lead. Maybe even at winning for the first time since returning from a fourth back surgery. Woods was 110 yards out and four shots back in the final round. He struck the ball cleanly, stared at intent- ly and then watched it spin off the green . The 14-time major winner fell a few feet short of pro- viding the first real drama Sunday on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. He missed an 8-foot par putt that caused him to flip his club, ended up with a dis- appointing bogey and limped home with a double at the famed 17th . Woods, howev- er, left the course feeling bet- ter than ever about his come- back. “This weekend was more like it,” Woods said. Woods shot a 3-under 69 in the final round and tied for 11th at 11-under 277. His round could have been much closer to the 65 he shot Saturday. “If I would have got off to a better start this week, if I would have had the game I had this weekend the begin- Charlotte Observer: Jeff Siner ning of the week, I would Tiger Woods made a string of birdies Sunday to make a run at the PGA Players Tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
