  • Insurance in Agriculture
INSURANCE IN AGRICULTURE Review Article Economics of Agriculture 1/2013 UDC: 368.5 INSURANCE IN AGRICULTURE Milan Počuča1, Zdravko Petrović2, Dragan Mrkšić3 Summary Damage in agricultural production can be crucial for the economy of a state, especially in countries where agricultural production prevails in the gross national income, as it is the case with Serbia. However, it is equally important that our agricultural producers manage incomes and expenditures in an efficient manner and optimize profit per surface unit, which is the basis of their business. Insurance plays an important part in the protection of the income statement of every agricultural producer as insurance costs are at the level of 1.5% to 2% on average of the production value, i.e. they are very low and saving on insurance could lead to the loss of the total yield and consequently total profit. However, agricultural insurance in Serbia is not developed enough. The state’s attempt to boost insurance development amounts to insurance subsidies, which, in the period of the implementation of this regulation, i.e. since 2006, has raised awareness of the need of such a type of protection of agricultural producers. Key words: agriculture, insurance, subsidies JEL: K13, Q14 Introduction People are not prone to taking risk and prefer certainty than uncertain consumption levels; essentially they prefer more certain outcomes4. This does not mean that risk should be avoided at all costs, but only that it should be considered when taking decisions5. From the point of view of an agricultural producer, insurance represents a method of the transfer of risk from themselves to an insurance company, in exchange for a premium in a certain amount.

  • Carlo Cimbri Is the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Unipol Group and Chairman of the Subsidiary Unipolsai Assicurazioni S.P.A
CARLO Carlo Cimbri is the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Unipol Group and Chairman of the subsidiary UnipolSai Assicurazioni S.p.A.. The Unipol Group – with over 13,000 employees, €16.5bn in insurance income in 2015 and over 16 million customers – is one of the key industry players in Europe and is the leader in the Non-Life business in Italy. Born in Cagliari in 1965, after earning a degree with honors in Economics from the University of Bologna, Cimbri has had over 20 years of experience in the insurance and banking sector. He joined Unipol, Finance and Treasury Area, in 1990 and over the years covered roles of increasing responsibility until he became one of the General Managers of the Unipol Group in 2005, when it ended the fiscal year with premium income of €8.9bn. In 2006, Cimbri conducted the sale of the BNL stake to BNP Paribas thereby archiving the assumed strategic diversification of Unipol in the banking sector. In 2007, he became the sole General Manager and in 2010, after taking office as Chief Executive Officer, he launched the Business Plan 2010-2012, which refocused the Group on the insurance business, with a significant recovery in profitability in the Non-Life sector, a major streamlining of costs and capital strengthening. The acquisition of control over the Arca Group (2010), the merger of Navale Assicurazioni into Unipol (2010) and the sale of the stake held in BNL Vita (2011) were completed throughout the three-year period. In January 2012, when at the end of the business plan all preset targets had been exceeded, Unipol – at a particularly difficult time for the Italian economy – submitted a proposal to rescue the Fondiaria- SAI Group through a merger with Unipol Assicurazioni and a major capital strengthening, leading to the birth of UnipolSai Assicurazioni, the leading company in the Non-Life sector in Italy with premium income of €13.9bn (as at 31/12/2015).

  • 2019 Insurance Fact Book
2019 Insurance Fact Book TO THE READER Imagine a world without insurance. Some might say, “So what?” or “Yes to that!” when reading the sentence above. And that’s understandable, given that often the best experience one can have with insurance is not to receive the benefits of the product at all, after a disaster or other loss. And others—who already have some understanding or even appreciation for insurance—might say it provides protection against financial aspects of a premature death, injury, loss of property, loss of earning power, legal liability or other unexpected expenses. All that is true. We are the financial first responders. But there is so much more. Insurance drives economic growth. It provides stability against risks. It encourages resilience. Recent disasters have demonstrated the vital role the industry plays in recovery—and that without insurance, the impact on individuals, businesses and communities can be devastating. As insurers, we know that even with all that we protect now, the coverage gap is still too big. We want to close that gap. That desire is reflected in changes to this year’s Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.)Insurance Fact Book. We have added new information on coastal storm surge risk and hail as well as reinsurance and the growing problem of marijuana and impaired driving. We have updated the section on litigiousness to include tort costs and compensation by state, and assignment of benefits litigation, a growing problem in Florida. As always, the book provides valuable information on: • World and U.S. catastrophes • Property/casualty and life/health insurance results and investments • Personal expenditures on auto and homeowners insurance • Major types of insurance losses, including vehicle accidents, homeowners claims, crime and workplace accidents • State auto insurance laws The I.I.I.
