The US Anti- Apartheid Movement and Civil Rights Memory
BRATYANSKI, JENNIFER A., Ph.D. Mainstreaming Movements: The U.S. Anti- Apartheid Movement and Civil Rights Memory (2012) Directed by Dr. Thomas F. Jackson. 190pp. By the time of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, in 1990, television and film had brought South Africa’s history of racial injustice and human rights violations into living rooms and cinemas across the United States. New media formats such as satellite and cable television widened mobilization efforts for international opposition to apartheid. But at stake for the U.S. based anti-apartheid movement was avoiding the problems of media misrepresentation that previous transnational movements had experienced in previous decades. Movement participants and supporters needed to connect the liberation struggles in South Africa to the historical domestic struggles for racial justice. What resulted was the romanticizing of a domestic civil rights memory through the mediated images of the anti-apartheid struggle which appeared between 1968 and 1994. Ultimately, both the anti-apartheid and civil rights movements were sanitized of their radical roots, which threatened the ongoing struggles for black economic advancement in both countries. This demandcaught whiteMemphians bysurprise,because they had always prided themselvesas being ªprogressiveºon racial issues.Token integration had quietly replaced public segregation in Memphisby the mid-1960s, butin the1967 mayoral elections,segregationist candidateHenry Loeb rodea waveof white backlash against racial ªmoderationºinto of®ce. -

Non-violent resistance through non-cooperation and civil disobedience are powerful tools of the deprived over the privileged sections of the society. Gandhi’s influence is nowhere more discernible in the developed West than in the United States itself. Martin Luther King, Jr., the leader who led the non-violent civil rights movement, in the United States to empower the African Americans, was highly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Civil rights denote the rights of individuals to equal protection under the laws of the land and equal access to public amenities and services in society. Civil rights differ from civil liberties. Significantly, civil liberties involve freedom of speech and expression and other freedoms of the citizens that are protected from the possible violation by the government. Civil rights, on the other hand, refer to individual members or groups—whether racial, religious and others—who need to be treated equally by the government and even by the private parties to a certain extent. -

The Dreamer: Remembering Dr. King By Quincy D. Brown – January 15, 2018 There is little difference between an idealistic dreamer and visionary activist when both decide to act on their inspiration. Joseph, one the Bible's most noteworthy dreamers, told his brothers two of his dreams. The first of Joseph’s dream was about sheaves of wheat bowing down to him. And if this wasn’t enough, he told his second dream to his father about the Sun and Moon and eleven stars bowing down to him. The implication of both dreams was that Joseph surmised that his eleven brothers (represented by the sheaves and eleven stars) and his father and mother (represented by the Sun and Moon) would one day bow down to his authority. Naturally, Joseph’s father tried to correct his son's youthful naiveté. His brothers, however, were not as patient or versed in the delicate art of persuasion. Instead, they resented him and tried to beat “the stuff of his dreams” out of him. The thinking goes: What do you do about a younger sister who has gotten out of line? What do you do about a little brother who dares to believe that he is equal to the eldest? What happens when a sibling begins to dream the impossible and their family doesn’t approve of it? Had not an assassin's bullet snuffed out his life prematurely, another noteworthy dreamer and visionary activist would have celebrated his 89th birthday this year. Like Joseph, Dr. King was a dreamer. He saw what others could not see. -

Kennedy Speaks on Martin Luther King Jr.: Analyzing Speeches Given on April 4 and 5, 1968 after the Death of Dr. King Historic Context: On April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in Memphis to a capacity crowd at the Mason Temple Church. He gave his final speech, the now-famous “Mountaintop” speech, in which he tells the audience, preparing to participate in protests that were to begin the next day, that “he may not get there with them.” Some feel it was foreshadowing his death – on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee at the Lorraine Motel. Senator Robert F. Kennedy was campaigning in Indiana for the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States at that time, and he gave two speeches within 24 hours in response to Dr. King’s assassination: one was spontaneous and unscripted, and the other was prepared and scripted. Nearly a quarter-million people descended on the nation’s capital for the 1963 March on Washington. As the signs on the opposite page remind us, the march was not only for civil rights but also for jobs and freedom. Nearly a quarter-million people—African Americans and whites, Christians and Jews, along with those of other races and creeds— gathered in the nation’s capital. They came from across the country to demand equal rights and civil rights, social justice and economic justice, and an end to exploitation and discrimination. After all, the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” was the march’s official name, though with the passage of time, “for Jobs and Freedom” has tended to fade. ; The march was the brainchild of longtime labor leader A.
