4 NORTHERN IOWA TRACK & FIELD 2000 Wonien 's Outlook

Building the women's track program at Northern Iowa has been a marathon instead of a sprint for head coach Chris Bucknam. Since Bucknam took control three years ago, the Panthers have steadily improved. Their fourth-place finish at the 1999 Missouri Valley Conference outdoor meet was the best women's effort in school history. Along the way, eight school records were set. So UNI has covered a lot of ground in a short period of time. Still, the race to make the Panthers a force in the MVC is far from over, according to Bucknam. "We want our women's program to be at the level of the men, and I think we started to approach that last year," said the Panther head coach. "But, as with any good team, we took a hit with graduation and that will have some effect on our performance this year. We're in a rebuilding stage and we hope that in a few years we'll be in a situation where we're not in rebuilding stages." The Panthers will compete this season without veterans like Jenny Jackson, who won the Missouri Valley outdoor title at 1500 meters a year ago, plus all-conference athletes Brenna Fleishman (hurdles) and Kendra Stannard (multi-events). There are no returning MVC champions on UNI's 2000 roster and only four all-conference athletes are back. How young is this team? Very. One senior and a half-dozen juniors make up the veterans, while 13 freshmen are on the squad. "We have a young team -- young sprinters, young high jumpers, young middle di tance runners -- a new generation of kids coming up from our first recruiting year," said Bucknam. Don't misunderstand the UNI coach, though. Bucknam points to UNI's second-place finish in the MVC cross country meet -- the best-ever effort on the women's side -- as a sign that Jill Bakewell the Panthers will be competitive. He also thinks he has people who can get the job done at the MVC level -- right now. In the long sprints, for example, Jill Bakewell is back for her "Track competition i a little different than cross country, junior season. She earned all-Valley honors outdoors last season but Rita is a great addition for us," said Bucknam. Junior Evette in the 4 x 400 relay and the open 400. They are Steph Corey, Sue Francois and Jennifer Fleishman a year ago," said Bucknam. "We fully expect her to Duffy. Winning in the classroom and achieving an academic degree is the primary goal for the student-athlete at the University of Northern Iowa. It is the University's chief objective to all ow each individual to have the maximum opportunity to participate in a positive educational experience and ultimately earn a coll ege degree. As a medium-sized public university with a faculty commit ted to quality undergraduate education, Northern Iowa is proud of its tudent-athletes' performance in the classroom. In informa tion taken from the 1998 NCAA Division I Graduation Rates Report, UNI athletes graduated at a rate higher than the general student body and at a higher rate than any of their Missouri Valley Conference counterparts. In fact, 35 to 40 percent of UNI student-athletes perenially post" grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. The key to Northern Iowa's academic program is the indi vidual -- the student-athlete gets out of the system what he or she puts into it. UNI has geared its academic program to make its student-athletes better individuals. It i important that the student-athletes develop a sense of pride in themselves as Northern Iowa's students, as athletes, as citizens, and as representatives of the Unjversity of Northern Iowa. A unique characteristic of the Northern Iowa athletic "family" is the cooperation between programs, allowing student-athletes to compete in more than one sport rather than having to choose one over another. The track and field program has had many student-athletes take advantage of those opportunities over the years. The Panthers pictured on this page are just a few of those who have excelled in track and field and another sport while attending the University of Northern Iowa.
