1 In the ancient times Hippocrates, Aristotle, and Galen appreciated the animal nature of tapeworms. The Arabs susgested that segments passed with the faeces were a separate species of parasite from tapeworms: they called these segments the cucuribitini, after their similarity to cucumber seeds. Andry, in 1718, was first to illustrate the scolex of a tapeworm from a human. Sexually mature tapeworms live in the intestine or its diverticula ( rarely in the coelum) of all classes of vertebrates. These are a group of parasites which are fairly common in both domestic animals and wild animals, and humans. CLASS CESTODA This class differs from the Trematoda in having a tape-like body with no body cavity and alimentarty canal. There is a wide variation in length, ranging from a few milimeters to several meters. The body is segmented, each segment containing one and sometimes two sets of male and female reproductive organs. Almost all the tapeworms of veterinary importance are in the order Cyclophylidea, two exceptions being in the order Pseudophyllidea. During their life cycle, one or two ( or more ) intermediated host are required in each of which the tapeworm undergo a phase of their development. Diop University of Dakar, Dakar, Senegal; 2Laboratory “Parasites and Mediterranean Ecosystems”, Faculty of Sciences and Techniques, University of Corsica Pascal Paoli, B.P. 52, F 20250 Corte, France Abstract The mature Paroniella reynoldsae spermatozoon exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material about 2.2 µm long and 0.65 µm wide at its base and two helicoidal crest-like bodies roughly 100 to 150 nm thick. The latter are of different lengths, spiralled and make an angle of about 45° with the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme is of the 9 + ‘1’ trepaxonematan pattern and does not reach the posterior extremity of the gamete. The nucleus is an electron-dense cord 0.25 µm thick coiled in a spi- ral around the axoneme. The cytoplasm exhibits a posterior densification and contains few small electron-dense granules in regions I, II and V of the spermatozoon. In regions III and IV, it is divided into irregular compartments by walls of electron- dense material. The cortical microtubules are spiralled at an angle of about 45°. The presence of an electron-lucent apical cone containing numerous small granules of electron-dense material has never, to our knowledge, been reported in a cestode. Likewise, a crest-like body forming a terminal spot of electron-dense material located in the prolongation of the apical cone has never been described before in a cestode. -

Various parasites are known from golden jackals across their geographic range, and certain groups can be spread during their expansion, increasing the risk of cross-infection with other carnivores or even humans. The current list of the golden jackal parasitesincludes194speciesandwascompiledonthebasis of an extensive literature search published from historical times until April 2017, and is shown herein in synoptic tables followed by critical comments of the various findings. This large variety of parasites is related to the extensive geographic range, territorial mobility and a very unselective diet. The vast majority of these parasites are shared with domestic dogs or cats. The zoonotic potential is the most important aspect of species reported in the golden jackal, some of them, such as Echinococcus spp., hookworms, Toxocara spp., or Trichinella spp., having a great public health impact. Our review brings overwhelming evidence on the importance of Canis aureus as a wild reservoir of human and animal parasites. Marchi of Florence, Corrado Parona of Sardinia, Vincenco Diamare of Naples, Prospero Sonsino of Pisa) of the second half of the 19th century deserved respect in the exploration on the life cycle of dipylidiid cestodes by finding and describing larval stages of these tapeworms in reptiles. They also gave the description of the strobilar stages of cestodes (Joyeuxiella echinorhynchoides, J. pasqualei and Diplopylidium acanthotetra) detected in carnivores. At the beginning of the 20th century, scientists from Spain (Carlos R. Lopez Neyra of Granada in cooperation with Jose M. Munoz Medina) and France (Charles Joyeux) proved experimentally the affiliation of larval stages from reptiles to the adult cestodes in cats. Further cestodes of the genus Diplopylidium and Joyeuxiella were described from African mammals and carnivores from India and the southern parts of the former Soviet Union. Witenberg (1932), Matevosjan (1963) and Jones (1983) reviewed the genera and reduced the number of valid species. D. acanthotetra, D. genettae, D. nölleri, D. polyacantha, D. zschokkei, D. monoophorum, J. pasqualei, J. echinorhynchoides and J. fuhrmanni were considered valid species. Of these, D. genettae, D. monoophorum, D. zschockei were not found again in recent times and the position of J. rossicum remains dubious. -
