Old Bailey, &c. Post 8vo; pp. [ii], 40; illustrated frontispiece (Barrington picking the pocket of J. Brown Esq. Also key with hook and joints, whalebone drag, knife with three joints, and ring with springs.), bound in period style half calf with marbled boards by Aquarius, title label on spine, title lettered in gilt, housed in a blue cloth box, very good copy.London; Printed for J. Bird, No. 22, Fetter lane, Fleet street; and Simmonds, No. 20, Paternoster Row.; n.d. [1790]. Ferguson 68. Very scarce: one of the first two primary 'biographies' of Barrington first published in 1790 after his trial, both of which were reprinted numerous times over 1790-91. The society pickpocket, George Barrington, the best-known of all convicts, was transported to New South Wales with the Third Fleet in 1791. Something of a folk hero in England due to the cheek and daring of his larcenous exploits, Barrington's trials, exploits, and largely mythical past gave rise to many pamphlet and chapbook accounts that found a ready market at the time of his trial and transportation. Subsequently, he was credited with a number of 'voyages' and 'histories' of New South Wales, especially when it was reported that he had been appointed superintendent of police at Parramatta. Although not written by the real Barrington, these many books and pamphlets are an important aspect of early Australian settlement, especially as regards the way the convict settlement was viewed in Britain. The Bird Man Of Brisbane Silvester Diggles and his Ornithology of Australia. First Edition; Cr. 4to; pp. xii, 215; coloured frontispiece, 38 full page coloured plates, notes, references, index, bound in original slick illustrated boards, signed and dated by author on front endpaper, fine copy.Brisbane; Boolarong Press; 2010. When Silvester Diggles arrived in 1855 there was little artistic or

scientific talent in the small frontier town of Brisbane. By the time of his death in 1880, his paramount legacy was a large book on Australian birds, profusely illustrated with hand-coloured lithographs. Acting as his own publisher from 1865 onwards, Diggles produced the first substantial zoological work to commence publication in Australia. The compilation and content of this rare work of art and natural history is examined here in the light of Diggles' life and times, as well as his ornithological predecessors and contemporaries. So too is his role in establishing the first scientific society and museum in Queensland. Click here to Order $65

He is remembered, if at all as an artist and naturalist who left some sketches of the disastrous undertaking before he himself perished on the journey north. Yet his letters reports and illustrations are of unique historical importance and antiquarian charm. His words and his pictures are published here for the first time, complete and unabridged."
