HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.

  • Shakespeare on Film and Television in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress
SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date.

  • Chapter One Cameras Are Rolling
Chapter One m Ca m e r a s ar e ro l l i n g “Cut!” That single syllable, amplified through the director’s megaphone, was always the greatest sound in the world to a kid like me. The filmed scene was now “in the can,” finished, done. We could take a break from all the hard work of memorizing lines, standing in the right place, entering the room on cue, making sure to look happy or confused or angry—whatever the director wanted. I looked over at Alfalfa, who was the undisputed star of Our Gang. His trademark cowlick drooped to one side, even though the unruly lock of hair had been firmly greased into place early that morning by Junie, the hard-boiled makeup lady. He and his chubby sidekick, Spanky, were shooting a quick scene on a bench in our clubhouse, with some of the rest of us just filling in the corners as extras. Alfalfa had a self-satisfied look on his face, knowing that he had nailed the performance. Everyone on the set admitted that young Carl Switzer, a.k.a. Alfalfa, had natural-born talent. “Good job, Alfie!” Our director, Fred Newmeyer, walked into the shot, stepping care- fully over some lighting cables. “You, too, Spanky. That’s a keeper for 9 10 / Finding Waldo sure.” He glanced over to where Tommy, Joe “Corky,” and I were still standing on our marks. None of us had been given any dialogue in this particular scene, so our task was basically to plop ourselves down where we were told and try to blend into the scenery.
