Instead of manually doing experiments and tests in a fully equipped lab using expensive lab equipment and human resources, these devices allow to run biochemical and medical experiments on a small chip. Digital microfluidic devices allow for a high degree of programmability, enabling parallel execution of bio-protocols, dynamic allocation of operation areas, and optimization of sensing and instrumentation, effectively making it the biolab equivalent of a general-purpose computer. This session will explore the need for new and faster methods for cell design (cell factories and synthetic biology) and a programmable micro-laboratory with the potential to disrupt current practice. PROGRAM Introduction: "Learning from the computer revolution", Jan Madsen, DTU Compute Business Talk: “Beer brewing strain improvement: An overview of current practices and why we need new methods.”, Timothy John Hobley, DTU Food, Denmark Tech Talk: “Creating yeast cell factories for production of chemicals”, Irina Borodina, DTU Biosustain, Denmark Tech Talk: !Digital microfluidcs at work", Georgi Tanev, DTU Compute/ DTU Bioengineering, Denmark Tech Talk: “Digital strain development for cell factories: The first step PCR.”, Winnie E.
