James Lick High School 6 Absent! The State of California has instituted Senate Bill 727 (Attendance Law). Under this law only students that are in school will count for reimbursement from the state. Because of this new law it is very important for the financial stability of the district that all students be in school. Every student must be in school unless it is necessary for him/her to be absent due to illness, doctor appointment, court subpoena or funeral of member of immediate family. These are the only excusable reasons for a student’s absence from school. Family emergencies, out-of-town emergencies, etc. are not excused absences unless the school has been notified prior to the absence. When possible, all absences should be cleared in advance through the Attendance Office. If a student arrives late to school, he/she must report directly to the Attendance Office with a note from a parent; if he/she does not, the student will receive “unverified” for all classes missed. If no parent verification is received, the student will receive an “unverified” for each class missed. Students who must leave campus before the end of the school day must check through the Attendance Office. If they do not, they will receive “unverified” for classes missed. Students who do not follow attendance procedures may be referred for disciplinary action. Students who are absent must observe the following procedures: 1. CONTACT THE SCHOOL—408.347.4431 It is requested that a parent or guardian telephone the school the first day of absence. Contact should be made as early as possible. The purpose of this call is to advise the school of the nature of the absence. 2. PHONE EVERY THREE DAYS AND CONTACT STUDENT’S ADVISOR In cases where students are absent for a period of several days, a parent or guardian should call the school every three days and advise the Attendance Office of the condition of the student. The parent or guardian is also encouraged to contact the Attendance Office (408.347.4431) for lesson assignments that have been missed. Following this procedure will prevent the student from falling behind in his/her work. 3. ADVANCE ABSENCES When the student knows in advance he/she will be absent, he/she should bring a note from home. This note should be cleared by the Attendance Office in advance of the absence. When it is not possible for the student to bring such a written excuse in advance, the parent or guardian must telephone the Attendance Office by 12 noon on the day of the absence.

*If you need more preprinted notes during the course of the semester, a parent may request an additional set by simply calling the Attendance Office. Student Support Center What—The Student Support Center brings together outside agencies and resources that work together with a Multi-Service Team to address the needs of all students, parents and staff. The Center provides a link to specific agencies that can deal directly with the school population and creates networks with a multitude of outside agencies to further assist the students and staff. The Center also plays a key role in the academic setting of James Lick High School with a focus on team building, understanding, and increased individual attention for students. Where—The Student Support Center (SSC) is conveniently located on the James Lick campus. Information is available in the attendance office. TheSSC has a room available for group meetings and an office that can be used for individual and family counseling. This multi-service center allows for many activities to occur and welcomes parents, students, staff and the community to take advantage of its resources. The SSC staff is open to suggestions on creative ways to expand the service base. How—The Student Support Center focuses on the development of the whole learner and the healthy family. The goal is to focus all resources nearest the student and family in a comprehensive program to promote personal, social and academic success. The Multi-Service Team meets weekly to review referrals and assign appropriate cases to team members. The team consists of school personnel as well as county service providers and community based staff. Referrals are made by staff, parents and students. Information about services is housed in the SSC and is easily accessible to the students and community. Coordination, case management, data collection and assessment is centralized and well organized. Through a team approach and strong parent involvement, each student will have the opportunity to improve his/her learning experience. Although crisis intervention and referral services are a part of the Center’s program, the primary goal of the Student Support Center is the prevention of personal, social, and academic problems. In this way the Center can be proactive, dealing with potential problems rather than waiting until problems occur and then reacting to them. At the present time the Center has prevention and counseling, family wellness and parenting, gay and lesbian counseling, mental health services, and juvenile justice services. The primary reason for selecting these areas is the need, availability, and quality of the services. More Information—If you would like further information about the Student Support Center or its programs, please call James Lick High School 408.347.4461.
