    Cincinnati Bengals Team History

    Cincinnati Bengals Team History Planning for the Cincinnati Bengals franchise began three full years before the team began playing in the American Football League in 1968. Paul Brown, who had enjoyed exceptional success as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for 17 seasons before departing in 1962, had the urge to get back into pro football. In 1965, he met with then-Governor Jim Rhodes and the two agreed the state could accommodate a second pro football team. A year later in 1966, Cincinnati’s city council approved the construction of 60,389-seat Riverfront Stadium, which was scheduled for completion by 1970. The next year, a group headed by Brown was awarded an American Football League franchise that would begin play in 1968. Brown named his team the Bengals in recognition of previous Cincinnati pro football franchises with the same name in the 1930s and 1940s. Brown himself returned to the coaching ranks on the Bengals sidelines for the first eight years. He retired after the 1975 season but continued to serve as general manager until his death in 1991. Mike Brown then succeeded his father as general manager. The 1968 Bengals won their first two home games in 28,000-seat Nippert Stadium against Denver and Buffalo and finished with a 3-11 record, the most an expansion team of the 1960s recorded. Cincinnati improved enough in 1969 that Brown was named the AFL Coach of the Year. In 1970, they captured the AFC Central division title and thus became the first expansion team to win a championship of any kind in just three years.

    VARSITY O 2019 FALL NEWS LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Fellow Varsity O Members, Happy Fall! Autumn officially means many things: students back on The Ohio State campus, the crisp air with crunchy leaves beneath each step, our fall-sport Buckeyes taking their respective fields and courts, Saturdays in The SHOE, and… Varsity O’s most exciting time of year! In early September, we celebrated our 42nd year of The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame. Our incredible inductees were legends in their sport, Olympic medalists, international icons, and can I just say, “Amazing human beings that were fun, kind, humble, and gracious to be awarded with such prestige!” As we roll into October, I want to remind all of you of our Homecoming Tailgate which will be at the French Fieldhouse on October 5th from 4-7pm prior to the Michigan State game. This is a great opportunity to join Varsity O and fellow Buckeyes for a food buffet, cash-bar, music, corn-hole, photo booth, and other fun surprises we have planned. We will also be celebrating our Jim Jones Career Achievement Award and Varsity O Loyalty award winners as well! Through the 2019-2020 academic year, the University is celebrating its storied and proud history of 150 years. We are calling it, “The Sesquicentennial Year of Celebration”. And although our Athletic Department does not date quite that far back, certainly the contributions and traditions of OSU Athletics has played a storied role in the history of the BEST university in the country. Since the earliest days, OSU athletes have inspired millions across the globe, and have delivered some of the most historic and thrilling moments in collegiate sports.

    FAGIN, Alvina J. Fagin (Abstracted from the Evening Leader, St. Marys, Ohio – 11 April 2016) Alvina J. Fagin, age 80, of Celina, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the home of her daughter in Newark. She was born on Jan. 5, 1936, in Cincinnati to the late Albert G. and Elaine J. (Kingham) Benzinger. Alvina loved to go to the beach in the Florida Keys, where she and her husband spent much of their time. She was the co-owner of St. Marys Marina along with her husband, Dan. She enjoyed cooking for her family and like her husband enjoyed playing euchre. Mostly she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by a son Bruce (Suzi Sutherland) Fagin of Delaware; a daughter Julie Ann (James) Woodring of Newark; by three grandchildren Jennifer, Jacob and Allyson Woodring; by a great-grandson Nathan Quick; by a brother Samuel (Sandy) Benzinger; by two sisters JoAnn Viox and Cheryl (Kenneth) Roberts; by a brother- in-law Samuel Shumard, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
