The key administrative positions in Temple Athletics include almost all of the above mentioned staff. In marketing, the responsibility is to motivate students and fans to be excited to attend games and increase ticket sales. Therefore, the sales team works with marketing to increase sales and attendance. The facilities department has relationships with every area within the organization of Temple Athletics. It is essential to maintain strong connections with the senior directors in marketing, communications and sales because we are always working a sporting event and it is important to work alongside and cooperatively with them. The facilities department also has a very close relationship with all of the trainers as well as with the communications area. In general, the facilities department has developed close relationships with all departments in athletics for the university. There is always equipment to maintain and set up, while managing the needs that arise for each athletic facility on the main campus as well as the satellite campuses that comprise Temple University.
My supervisor’s chain of command is as follows (starting at the bottom):
Neil Theobald President Kevin Clark Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Ingram Associate Vice President/Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Joe Giunta Senior Associate AD/Sports Administration Lee Roberts Assistant AD/Facilities and Event Management Bryan Kulp Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities

Public Relations and Marketing
Temple Athletics is continuously in the public eye, giving back to the urban community it surrounds. Most recently, the Temple Owls football team served Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of families in Philadelphia at Stenton Family Manor. They also collected food for the
Bethesda Project in Philadelphia for Thanksgiving, giving back to families who could not afford their own dinner. The overall methods of public relations Temple Athletics utilized are predominantly through social media, emails to parents and alumni as well as the university website. News headlines showcase the teams giving back to in the community and supporting the children and families of Philadelphia. The sporting events at Temple University are marketed to its target audience through social media, email blasts from marketing and showcased on the Temple Athletics website. Student workers also market the games on campus through signage and promotional items and incentives. For Temple’s marketing assessment, projecting for the future should include a wide array of evaluations before creating a marketing plan. The aspects that should be considered include their overall strategy, target market, social media usage, consistent client engagement and public relations. Temple Athletics is very prideful of its
Cherry and White program where students can purchase a package, guaranteeing them admission to every home football and basketball game. At the start of every year, Temple markets this program to all students, but specifically targeting those who purchased the program in the past to maintain client engagement.
Clients and Customers
The clients for Temple Athletics are the student-athletes; they create a suitable and engaging environment through hiring esteemed coaches and staff to follow them during their
8 college athletic careers. Temple Athletics also has close partnerships with Global Spectrum and
Front Row Marketing. Global Spectrum runs the Liacouras Center on Broad Street. This arena is home to Temple’s Men’s Basketball team and is a huge asset to the university. Global
Spectrum puts Temple Athletics at a high priority and creates a lively experience for all at the arena. In addition, Temple has partnered with Front Row Marketing to assist with sponsorships and corporate partnerships.
The demographics of the student-athletes at Temple University consist of half male and half female, this is no surprise given the importance of Title IX. In addition, all student-athletes have received a high school diploma prior to beginning their athletic career with Temple
Athletics.
Special Event
On Saturday, November 9th, 2013, the Men’s Soccer team hosted their first playoff game of the season at Ambler field. They hosted South Florida to compete for a future spot in the playoffs. During this special event, responsibilities included setting up and breaking down all equipment, including sound system, tents and chairs. This game was different from all of the other games because there were a lot more fans in the stands than usual.
In addition to those listed above, duties and responsibilities were fairly similar to a regular game, except there was more tension between the coaches, which created tension amongst the rest of the group. Managing the ‘ball girls’ and during the game was more intense because coaches would get restless and impatient with them; they wanted the game to move faster. A major responsibility was diffusing the tension and talking to the girls a lot more. In
9 addition, setting up the parking situation was very time-consuming; since there was a higher than usual attendance, a parking plan was created to make sure the officials received priority parking and all parking arrangements were safe.
During this event, there were definitely more responsibilities than that of any other Men’s
Soccer game; when it is a playoff game or any other major event, when the pressure is high, it is important to place focus on the team and the comfort of the fans, from a sports manager’s perspective.
Self-Evaluation
My internship experience was definitely a fulfilling and successful time for me; the most beneficial components were working at most home games as it gave me a behind-the-scenes look of the entire operation of this department. I also feel my supervisor, Bryan, was a large part of my gratifying experience in Temple Athletics. He was very understanding of my lack of experience and was willing to assist me with learning the ropes and making me feel comfortable with the projects I was to undertake. As I gained knowledge and worked hard to learn, Bryan trusted me enough to take on projects by myself and even set up systems for home games unattended. If I did not have a supervisor who allowed me to take the reins and just do the job at hand, I would not have acquired the experiences or boost in confidence for my abilities to perform. I polished my skills in Microsoft Excel in addition to my overall professional growth working within this department. My work ethic and overall interpersonal skills were strengthened by my experience with Temple Athletics and I feel even more comfortable in the workplace in my chosen field. There is one aspect of my professional abilities I would like to continue to work on. I want to learn how to use the other Microsoft Office programs, such as
10
Wordpress. I have never used it before and I definitely need to start looking into it to broaden my skills. I have never really been tech-savvy, so focusing on my computer skills in general would be very beneficial moving forward.
This experience has further cemented my passion to pursue a career in the field of
Facilities and Operations or Event Management. It has also allowed me to expand my professional network at Temple; I feel more of a connection to my school after working with athletics. I have also met professionals who work at the Liacouras Center and for Global
Spectrum, so my goal to work in an arena can happen with the connections I made in these organizations.
My philosophy for sport has been justified after this experience with Temple Athletics. I knew arenas and stadiums are a large part of the industry and that there is a lot of work and set up involved in creating a successful event. One aspect of my internship experience that I did not expect from the beginning was how casual the work environment was. I never wore business casual or professional attire; I always wore sweats and comfortable clothes with sneakers, even when I was just in the office. It definitely makes sense because there is a lot of “hands-on” work in this aspect of the industry.
The internship program in the facilities department was strong in many ways, but a few aspects could be changed in the future. There is a large work area for an intern, which was great; it is located in the front of the office, so I also acted as an unofficial administrative assistant to
Lee, Karen and Bryan. I also had numerous opportunities to build strong relationships with other professionals. I was constantly around others in different departments which allowed me to expand my network of connections. On the other hand, this was only the second semester
11 facilities had an internship position, and it is clear that there are still some upgrades that need to be made. A lot of the work at games is usually done by paid employees, and some employees were reluctant to give up their normal tasks to me, as an intern. Also, there were many days where I had no office work; I did mostly large projects, but I wonder if there will be any projects left for future interns. Once I am finished, only revisions will be made. I think there should be weekly agendas for an intern so they do not have to constantly go to their supervisor’s office and ask what needs to be done. I know I felt I was interrupting Bryan in his office whenever I went in to ask if I could help with anything; it would be easier for the intern as well as the supervisor to have everything mapped out ahead of time.

Do’s and Don’t’s
12
Do:
1. Remain in the front office at all times or at a location where you are aware of persons
entering the building.
2. Direct guests away from the locker room areas unless they are scheduled (athletics) or are
maintenance personnel.
3. Assist with any questions guests may have the best you can.
Don’t:
1. Leave the office/Pavilion area without a replacement.
2. Avoid people who come in. If someone comes in and they look lost, ask if you can assist
them.
3. Look too busy. If you look unavailable, people may not know you are there to help.
*You are more than welcome to bring your lunch or a snack, computers, books and other devices to use while on duty; just be sure to stay aware of what is happening at all times.
Lights
To turn on the lobby lights, use the same key you used to enter the main double doors. Once you enter, there is a keyhole on the left wall. Place the key in and turn it and the lights will go on.
To turn the off, simply repeat. The lights to the field are located in the grey box on the wall behind the security desk. They are labeled on the inside of the door as “Row #” and should be on for the activities held on the turf. Turn these on if a group is using the field and turn them off when locking up and turning off the rest of the lights.
13
Doors
1. To unlock the entry doors, use the allen/hex key in the middle desk drawer. Inset this key
to the small hole to the right of the door “crash panel”. Push the crash panel in and turn
the key until it clicks and panel will stay in.
2. To lock the main entry doors, insert allen key into the hole next to the crash panel and
turn until the bar pops out. CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE DOOR LATCHES WHEN
YOU LEAVE AND IS LOCKED FROM THE OUTSIDE.

In Case of an Emergency
There’s a field hockey game, and it is halftime. One of the players enters the Pavilion to use the bathroom. Before she gets there, she passes out from exhaustion. She is alone; what do you do?
14
1. Go over to her to check if she is conscious.
2. If she is not, contact one of the above numbers (Karen is always at the games). They will
then contact the trainer.
3. Do not move her; keep her right where she is until help arrives.
4. When help arrives, and the situation worsens, call TU Police (there is usually a police
officer at the game, so check outside before you make the call).
FAQ
1. I am a returning student, and am not aware that the Pavilion is not open to the public
anymore. Where can I go to play basketball?
Pearson-McGonigle holds the basketball courts now. It is located on Broad Street and
they are on the 3rd floor. Make sure you bring your Temple ID.
2. I am a parent of one of the girls on the field hockey team. Last year, we plugged our
crockpots inside the Pavilion. Can I do this again this year?
Unfortunately, the rules have changed this year. Crockpots can only be plugged into the
outlets outside of the Pavilion.
3. I am a parent from the opposing team. I have never been in North Philadelphia and
would be more comfortable parking in a parking garage. Where is the closest one?
The closest parking garage is at 15th and Montgomery. It is a paid lot.
Important Things to Know
People from other areas and schools come to visit Temple. With this being said they can get lost and not know their way around campus. Make sure you know your way around and are able to
15 give accurate directions to places such as the Temple Bookstore, Liacouras Center, and Pearson-
McGonigle.
There is no AED in the Pavilion. If one is needed and there is a game at Geasy Field, the trainer should have one. If not, call TU Police.
BE SURE TO LOCK UP EVERYTHING AT THE END OF THE DAY.
