Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos - A survey of the major recordings by Ralph Moore Ariadne auf Naxos is less frequently encountered on stage than Der Rosenkavalier or Salome, but it is something of favourite among those who fancy themselves connoisseurs, insofar as its plot revolves around a conceit typical of Hofmannsthal’s libretti, whereby two worlds clash: the merits of populist entertainment, personified by characters from the burlesque Commedia dell’arte tradition enacting Viennese operetta, are uneasily juxtaposed with the claims of high art to elevate and refine the observer as embodied in the opera seria to be performed by another company of singers, its plot derived from classical myth. The tale of Ariadne’s desertion by Theseus is performed in the second half of the evening and is in effect an opera within an opera. The fun starts when the major-domo conveys the instructions from “the richest man in Vienna” that in order to save time and avoid delaying the fireworks, both entertainments must be performed simultaneously. Both genres are parodied and a further contrast is made between Zerbinetta’s pragmatic attitude towards love and life and Ariadne’s morbid, death-oriented idealism – “Todgeweihtes Herz!”, Tristan und Isolde-style. Strauss’ scoring is interesting and innovative; the orchestra numbers only forty or so players: strings and brass are reduced to chamber-music scale and the orchestration heavily weighted towards woodwind and percussion, with the result that it is far less grand and Romantic in scale than is usual in Strauss and a peculiarly spare ad spiky mood frequently prevails. -

Aida opens on October 19, 2019 for four performances. Additional performances are October 22, 25, and 27 (matinee), 2019. All evening performances for the 2019-2020 season will begin at 7:30 PM for the convenience of our audiences. The matinee will remain at 2 PM. Assembled for the opening opera of the season is an exciting cast of singers including the Company debut of soprano Michelle Bradley as Aida who is quickly becoming one of the most sought after Verdi sopranos performing today. Making a welcome return to San Diego Opera in the role of Radames is tenor Carl Tanner who was last heard in San Diego Opera’s 2018 production of Turandot as Calaf. Also making house debuts are mezzo-soprano Olesya Petrova as Amneris and baritone Nelson Martinez as Amonasro. Bass Mikhail Svetlov returns to sing the King of Egypt, having last been heard as Ambimelech in 2013’s Samson and Delilah. -

A total of $61,000 was given in awards. Of all the singers heard over three days of auditions, 16 were selected as finalists to perform at the Morgan. Of these, five were selected as winners of George London Awards of $10,000 each. The remaining 11 singers were awarded George London Encouragement Awards of $1,000 each. Verdi’s Macbeth - A Survey of the Major Recordings by Ralph Moore Although Macbeth was still a product of his anni di galera, Verdi was able to expend more time, care and effort over it than he had had for his previous operas, working closely with Piave, his first librettist, then the poet Maffei to ensure that the spirit and even precisely some of the language (translated into Italian, obviously) of his beloved Shakespeare infused the work, and giving his singers close instructions regarding how he wanted it performed. As such, it was a watershed opera, representing a great leap forward in both his music and dramaturgy. He had the further advantage of a star baritone playing the lead role; Felice Varesi enjoyed the greatest success of his career at its premiere in 1847. As a result, despite some stylistic infelicities and a certain incongruity between the earlier, rum-ti-tum style of its original form and the sophistication of the later additions, Macbeth, having largely dropped out of sight until it was revived post WW2, is now deservedly popular and frequently staged. It is today almost invariably heard in the revision which Verdi made for Paris in 1864. One live performance and one studio recording below present the 1847 original; the latter is included here merely for its comedy value. There is also a recording of a live performance given at the Valle d'Itria Festival, Martina Franca in 1997 which I have not heard but by all accounts is not as well sung as the 1978 live recording on Opera Rara. -

DENNIS BRAIN ON RECORD A Comprehensive Discography Compiled by Robert L. Marshall Fourth Edition, 2011 FOREWORD This is the fourth, and no doubt final, revision of the “Comprehensive Inventory by Composer” section from my book, Dennis Brain on Record: A Comprehensive Discography of his Solo, Chamber and Orchestral Recordings, originally published in 1996, with a foreword by Gunther Schuller (Newton, Mass: Margun Music, Inc.). Most of the additions and corrections contained in the present list were brought to my attention by Dr. Stephen J. Gamble who, over the course of the past fifteen years, has generously shared his discographical findings with me. Although many of these newly listed items also appear in the discography section of the recently published volume Dennis Brain: A Life in Music, co-authored by Dr. Gamble and William C. Lynch (University of North Texas Press), it seemed useful nonetheless to make an updated, integral version of the “comprehensive” inventory available as well. There is one significant exception to the claim of “comprehensiveness” in the present compilation; namely, no attempt has been made here to update the information relating to Dennis Brain’s film studio activities. All the entries in that regard included here were already listed in the original publication of this discography. The total number of entries itemized here stands at 1,791. In the original volume it was 1,632. All the newly added items are marked in the first column with an asterisk after the composer’s name. (It will be interesting to see whether any further releases are still forthcoming.) The entries themselves have been updated in other respects as well.
